Dante, Celestino and the Forgiveness: from the Comedy to a destination branding. – Despite references to Celestino V on the Divine Comedy are not clear, the lives of Dante Alighieri and the Pope are certainly intertwined. Dante’s expectations on a spiritual renewal of the Roman Church, disappointed by Celestino’s resignation, seem to find acknowledgment today in a series of actions devoted to promoting his main bequest, the Forgiveness, a new territorial brand that is also serving the purpose to help the territory of L’Aquila recover from the 2009 earthquake, especially in trying to fostering a tourism development around Celestino’s figure

The geographic approximation on the news about the ‘Central Italy’ earthquake and its effects on tourism

In 2016 and 2017 a series of earthquakes hit some territories of Central Italy, causing victims and damages. The news was immediately spread by social media who, along with national Institutes, adopted the broad denomination Centro Italia to identify the affected territory, instead of using more confined and precise toponyms. The purpose of this article is to analyse what repercussions this choice – probably unintentional – had on those territories that form part of Central Italy but were not affected by earthquakes. To do that, an analysis on a decline in tourism is presented, considering it as a fickle business that can quickly oscillate depending on the perception strangers have about a certain territory. A focus is proposed on territories of Abruzzo and Umbria that experienced a fall in presences for being perceived as unsafe

Cooperations, mediations and conflicts between Italy and Switzerland in the Ticino River catchment basin: some geographical reflections. – This paper aims to describe and critically analyze the set of agreements, common laws and practices that were build up, across the years, to regulate cooperation between Switzerland and Italy around the Ticino River catchment basin on a series of issues concerning lakes and rivers. We identified five: shipping, fishing, regulation of water levels, electricity supply and production, and environmental protection. Interreg projects that were developed in the area are analyzed as recent means to solve conflicts based on innovative cross-scale governances. Eventually, issues of potential discord demanding mediation and cooperation in the near future are outlined, specifically in relation to climate change

The impact of natural disasters: How the 2009 earthquake transformed the economy of L’Aquila’s labour market area

We investigate the economic impact of the 2009 earthquake in the L'Aquila labour market area (Italy) through a synthetic difference-in-differences method applied to the 2004–2013 period. The shock immediately disrupted the local economy with a 27.3 % and 38.2 % reduction in employment and the number of firms. However, these effects are not statistically significant when measured 5 years after the earthquake, suggesting that a rebound process affected both dimensions. Such findings are the result of heterogeneous dynamics across the manufacturing and service sectors: the former showed a prolonged contraction in the number of employees and firms, whereas the latter experienced a strong recovery after a short-term negative effect. These dynamics have induced an increase in L'Aquila’s sector dissimilarity from other local labour market areas in Italy
