    Investigation of fracture toughness for a polycrystalline graphite under combined tensile-tear deformation

    In the present contribution, mixed mode I/III fracture toughness of a polycrystalline graphite is studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically using a new designed test specimen. A simple disc shape specimen subjected to three-point bending named herein edge notched disc bend (ENDB), is successfully employed for fracture toughness experiments on graphite. This specimen can introduce full combination of modes I and III including pure mode I, pure mode III and complete intermediate mode mixities. Fracture toughness values (KIc and KIIIc) of investigated graphite are obtained for six different mode mixities for and the obtained experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions of two conventional mixed mode I/III fracture theories namely: maximum tangential stress (MTS) and maximum tangential strain energy density (MTSED). It has been observed that the fracture toughness results are in good agreement with the mixed mode I/III curve of MTSED criterion. Consequently, the suggested ENDB specimen can be proposed as a suitable specimen for mixed mode I/III fracture toughness study of based on graphite materials. © 2017 Elsevier Lt

    Mixed mode I/II fracture investigation of Perspex based on the averaged strain energy density criterion

    In this work, some recent mixed mode I/II fracture toughness results obtained from Perspex (or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)) with four simple cracked specimens subjected to the conventional three-point bend loading are reanalysed based on local energy concept. Although all the mentioned samples have been tested under the same and similar mode mixities, different fracture toughness envelopes were obtained for mixed mode I/II fracture of PMMA. The averaged strain energy density (SED) criterion has been applied in the past for different types of notched specimens (including U, V, O and keyhole notches). It is shown that the mixed mode tensile-in plane shear fracture toughness data obtained from the semicircular and triangular crack type specimens are successfully predicted for sharp cracked PMMA samples using the SED criterion. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

    A Novel Method Based on a Non-Stationary Discrete Markov Chain for Tracking Variations in the Quantity of Reserved Energy and the Number of Electric Vehicles

    Since the initial suggestion that electrically propelled vehicles could be used on the grid-side, numerous significant investigations have been conducted to showcase the capabilities of these technologies, which have proven to be highly advantageous. Nevertheless, there are still many uncertainties surrounding the integration of electric vehicles into the power grid, which is why it has been likened to a black box. These uncertainties include the number of electric vehicles that will be connected to the grid at any given time, the amount of energy that will be stored in their batteries during both the daytime and overnight, and the impact that their charging profiles will have on the overall load placed on the power system. In addition, there are several unanswered questions that need to be addressed. This article presents a novel model that effectively addresses these uncertainties. It is based on a non-stationary Markov chain, and it was introduced in this paper. The findings of the model provide fascinating insights into the number of electric vehicles connected to the grid and the amount of energy saved over the course of a day, as demonstrated by a case study. In addition, this article analyzes and evaluates the ability of the model to accurately represent the load modeling of electric vehicle charging

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
