American Oil Diplomacy in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea [electronic resource].
The United States is the world's largest oil consumer and importer. Here Gawdat Bahgat examines the nation's growing dependence on fossil fuels--particularly oil--and the main challenges it faces in securing supplies from two energy-rich regions, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. He argues that long-term U.S. energy strategy must be built on diversity of both the fuel mix and the geographic origin of that fuel. It should include a broad combination of measures that would stimulate domestic production, provide incentives for conservation, promote clean technologies, and eliminate political barriers to world markets.http://florida.theorangegrove.org/og/file/b14b215b-f6d3-964c-0776-a9500329d2b1/1/AmericanOilDiplomacy.pdfNarrative text, Textbookhttp://www.ogtp-cart.com/product.aspx?ISBN=9781616101053Higher EducationExpositiveThe United States is the world's largest oil consumer and importer. EU-Iran Relations after the Nuclear Deal.
The signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between Iran and global powers in July 2015 was a major turning point in the emerging strategic landscape of the Middle East. The ‘nuclear deal’ led to the lifting by the EU and the US of nuclear-related sanctions, and is now operational. Other sanctions remain in place, however.
Nevertheless, unhindered by US competition, European trade delegations have entered into a latter-day gold rush, led by the promise of the biggest untapped market in the world. As such, the EU has both an opportunity and a responsibility to help Iran reintegrate properly into the international system. But, in the face of an opaque clerical regime that relies on internal repression and military business conglomerates, Europe stands to lose if it continues to pursue its uncalculated and uncoordinated approach towards the Islamic Republic.
This report offers recommendations to guide the EU towards a comprehensive EU strategy for relations with Iran. It maintains that there is no other option but to keep universal values and the rule of law at the core of the emerging bilateral relationship. In fact, the protection of the economic rights of European traders and investors allows the EU to push for wider reforms and the normalisation of relations
A Nuclear Arms Race in the Middle East: Myth or Reality?
Since the early 2000s Iran's nuclear program has been a major focus of international and regional policy. Many policy makers and scholars have expressed their concern that if Iran “goes nuclear” other Middle Eastern countries, particularly Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, will follow suit. This author argues against this conventional wisdom. As a NATO member, Turkey is a special case. The analysis suggests that security is the main reason why countries pursue nuclear weapons. Egypt and Saudi Arabia (along with other Arab countries) have learned how to live with a perceived nuclear Israel. Iran with a nuclear capability, if it happens, would not pose a security threat to either Cairo or Riyadh. In short, the author argues that an Iran with nuclear capability will further destabilize the Middle East and will be a negative development, but it is not likely to make Egypt and Saudi Arabia “go nuclear.”</jats:p
North Africa and Europe: energy partnership
The European Union (EU) is heavily dependent on Russia to meet its vast and growing demand for oil and gas supplies. In the last several years, because of disagreements between Russia and Ukraine, natural gas supplies to Europe had been interrupted. This interruption has highlighted the EU's over-dependence on its large neighbour. Given Russia's massive hydrocarbon resources and geographical proximity, the EU-Russia interdependence is likely to endure for many years. Still, in order to reduce Brussels' energy vulnerability, the EU has sought to initiate and consolidate cooperation with major oil- and gas-producing regions. This paper examines the emerging energy partnership between the EU and North Africa (Algeria, Egypt and Libya). The growing cooperation between the two sides is likely to improve Europe's energy security. Copyright 2009 The Author. Journal compilation 2009 Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Incidence and Risk Factors of Early-onset Glaucoma following Pediatric Cataract Surgery in Egyptian Children: A One-year Study
ABSTRACT
Aim
To study the incidence and risk factors of glaucoma occurring within 1 year following pediatric cataract surgery in Egyptian children.
Materials and methods
This is a prospective nonrandomized study conducted at Aburich Children's Hospital, over a period of 1 year on a cohort of Egyptian patients with congenital and infantile cataract. One hundred and fifty eyes of 88 patients were enrolled in this study. All the patients underwent anterior approach removal of lens matter, whereas primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was carried at the age of 1 and 2 years for unilateral and bilateral cases respectively. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 1 year. For those who developed glaucoma, time of diagnosis and associated risk factors were reported.
Results
The incidence of glaucoma was 11.33% (17 of 150 eyes), while incidence of glaucoma suspect was 0.67% (1 of 150 eyes) in the first year following cataract surgery. The majority of the cases (66.7%) were discovered in the first 3 months postcataract surgery. Age at time of cataract surgery, the state of aphakia/pseudophakia, persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), and microphthalmia were not found to be significant predictors of early-onset glaucoma in our study.
Conclusion
Aphakic glaucoma continues to be a devastating condition with high incidence during first year following cataract surgery.
Clinical significance
Regular follow-up should start as early as possible following cataract surgery. Further prospective studies with larger study population are required.
