Cultural Distance, Multiculturalism and Prejudice against Immigrants
Several factors can influence this link: the endorsement to multiculturalism compared to other integration models, the perception of this model as a threat to national identity or the presentation of multiculturalism in abstract terms (i.e. its objectives) or concrete (i.e. its implementation in a national context). The results have shown that among the French who endorse multiculturalism, the perception of cultural distance weakly correlates with prejudice whereas it correlates more among the French who endorse assimilation’s integration model. By focusing on French people who prefer multiculturalism, we showed that the perception of this model as a threat to national identity can also influence the impact of cultural distance on prejudice. Among the French who perceive multiculturalism as threatening, cultural distance involves more prejudice than among those who perceive it as less threatening. A source of threat to multiculturalism could reside in the way it is presented – its degree of abstraction – with more threat when we refer to concrete policy achievement in a country rather than the abstract ideal model. Indeed, in a comparative study between France and the Netherlands, we showed that the link between cultural distance and prejudice towards immigrants is higher when multiculturalism is defined in concrete terms than with its abstract definition
The development of social categorization and intergroup attitudes in 3-to-6-year-old children : the impact of the social status and numerical status
In this thesis, we study the impact of a group’s social and numerical status as well as the level of cultural diversity of the school on the development of social categorization and intergroup attitudes in children aged between 3 and 6 years. In order to study these factors, we use photographs representing children from three racial groups: Caucasian, Black-African, and North African. These photographs are used in a free social categorization task and a cultural distance perception task. The results show an age effect on racial categorization: the older the children, the more successful they are at the racial categorizing task. In addition, there is an effect of the group’s social status: high social status children are more successful in the racial categorizing task than those belonging to a low social status group. Regarding the perception of cultural distance, the results show that participants perceive photographs portraying Black-Africans and North-Africans as more culturally different compared to those portraying Caucasians. However, this effect can vary according (1) the social status of the participants’ group: cross-cultural differences are perceived mostly by high social status children (i.e, Caucasians), (2) the level of a school’s cultural diversity: in medium diversified schools, participants do not perceive a significant difference between the photographs, and (3) the interaction between these factors (the social status of the participants’ group and the diversity of the environment): the perception of intercultural differences between the photographs is stronger among low social status’ participants enrolled in low diversified schools
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
