: In the recent years Islamic banking and financial industry received an increased global attention with tremendous proliferation not only among Muslims but also amongst non-Muslim communities. Despite the fact that Jigawa State of Nigeria is dominated by a Muslim population that supposed to be conducting their financial transactions in compliance with the shari’ah, as achieved in most Islamic countries and others globally, unfortunately Islamic banking and financial institutions are yet to be established in the state. This paper aims to highlight on the challenges of Islamic banking and finance products in Nigeria, particularly Jigawa State, using the content analysis method. The major findings are that so many challenges towards establishing Islamic banking and financial institutions exist in the state and there is need to strive harder to overcome the challenges at the state level and nationally. Recommendations were offered on how to move forward and enhance the situatio

A review of Islamic credit card concepts from shariah perspective in Malaysia

    No full text
The Islamic credit card is introduced by Islamic financial institutions to substitute the conventional credit card. Credit Card-I has played a significant part in the progress of Islamic banking in Malaysia. A group of contemporary scholars have an unfavourable opinion on credit card operations. They argue that it is a modern way of reviving riba and a hilah (trick) to legitimise interest. The concepts of Inah and Tawarruq were disapproved by the majority of the Islamic scholars in the Hambali, Maliki, and Hanafi schools of jurisprudence, and some contemporary scholars considered them as sales contracts intended as a legal stratagem to legalise debt with riba (interest). However, this problem drove some Malaysian Islamic banks to come up with the concept of Ujrah, which is accepted by the more significant number of scholars as to the best substitute for Inah and Tawarruq. This paper aims at reviewing the scholars’ views on the concept of Inah, Tawarruq and Ujrah applied in the Islamic credit card. The study will examine the views of classical and contemporary scholars on the concept of Inah and Tawarruq. It will then further discuss the concept of Ujrah and views of scholars regarding the Ujrah. A qualitative method was used by adopting library research, and the study mostly relied on primary and secondary sources of Shariah. The study relies on the Quran, Hadith and jurisprudence to achieve the objective. The findings highlighted that the credit cards based on the concept of ujrah (fee) are acceptable to contemporary scholars if the structure operation did not involve riba (interest)

Managing Intellectual Capital for SMEs’ Sustainable Development. A Conceptual Proposal

    No full text
This article contributes to the body of literature on intellectual capital (IC) and Islamic work ethics (IWE) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It aims to investigate the role of socio-economic factors in promoting sustainable development (SD) and value creation. Ibn Khaldun's theory of development is employed to identify the socio-economic factors underlying IC and IWE that play a role in the sustainable development (SD) of SMEs. The findings reveal five socio-economic activities form the foundation of the proposed conceptual framework which is aligned with three fundamental streams in economics and management studies (Ibn Khaldun's development theory, IC, and IWE)

Supporting the OSGi service platform with mobility and service distribution in ubiquitous home environments

    No full text
The OSGi service specification defines an open service platform for service delivery, composition and execution in networked environments. The specification, however, is limited to a single java virtual machine (JVM) and does not define the distribution and mobility of services across different OSGi platforms and devices. This paper first revisits the fundamentals of OSGi service distribution, clarifies and defines a terminology for OSGi service mobility and distribution. It then proposes to extend the current OSGi platform with service distribution and service mobility that aim to support three important requirements on ubiquitous applications, namely, spontaneous interoperability, mobility and software adaptability. The paper demonstrates these extensions through several prototype implementations. These extensions are supported through a common framework, which targets at ubiquitous environments and aims to facilitate the construction of OSGi applications that span multiple OSGi platforms, multiple JVMs and multiple devices. In addition, the proposed framework offers two special features: First, it supports automatic contextual management through a virtual global shared space whose content is automatically and dynamically adjusted to reflect the changes in the system and the mobile environment; Second, it supports different OSGi bundle and service mobility paradigms. The proposed framework blurs the distinction between local and remote services, where remote services can be accessed as if they were local, which greatly simplifies application development. We believe existing OSGi platform distribution solutions can also be supported by this framework. © The Author 2008. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of The British Computer Society. Impact of Safety Protocols, Training and Entrepreneur Commitment on Safety Performance

    No full text
In Malaysia, SMEs play a crucial role in economic growth but struggle with managing occupational safety and health (OSH) compared to larger businesses. A study on SMEs examined the effects of safety protocols, training, and entrepreneurial commitment on safety performance. The study collected data using survey tools adapted from prior research. A sample of 272 SME entrepreneurs was targeted, and the data was analyzed using SPSS. The results show that safety protocols, training, and entrepreneur commitment have significant impact on safety performance. These findings highlight the need for policymakers to establish clearer regulations and for entrepreneurs to implement OSH strategies

Guaranteed and robust a posteriori error estimates for singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems

    No full text
International audienceWe derive a posteriori error estimates for singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems which yield a guaranteed upper bound on the discretization error and are fully and easily computable. Moreover, they are also locally efficient and robust in the sense that they represent local lower bounds for the actual error, up to a generic constant independent in particular of the reaction coefficient. We present our results in the framework of the vertex-centered finite volume method but their nature is general for any conforming method, like the piecewise linear finite element one. Our estimates are based on a H(div)-conforming reconstruction of the diffusive flux in the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas space linked with mesh dual to the original simplicial one, previously introduced by the last author in the pure diffusion case. They also rely on elaborated Poincaré, Friedrichs, and trace inequalities-based auxiliary estimates designed to cope optimally with the reaction dominance. In order to bring down the ratio of the estimated and actual overall energy error as close as possible to the optimal value of one, independently of the size of the reaction coefficient, we finally develop the ideas of local minimizations of the estimators by local modifications of the reconstructed diffusive flux. The numerical experiments presented confirm the guaranteed upper bound, robustness, and excellent efficiency of the derived estimates

The present study was designed to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and cytotoxic properties of different extracts from aerial parts of V. diversifolium (family Scrophulariaceae), a plant that is native to Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. Six extracts, namely, hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), ethanol (EtOH), 70% EtOH, and water (aqueous) were prepared by maceration. The EtOH extract was predominated by the presence of rutin (4280.20 μg g−1) and p-coumaric acid (3044.01 μg g−1) while the highest accumulation of kaempferol-3-glucoside (1537.38 μg g−1), caffeic acid (130.13 μg g−1) and 4-hydroxy benzoic acid (465.93 μg g−1) was recorded in the 70% EtOH, aqueous, and EtOAc extracts, respectively. The EtOH (46.86 mg TE/g) and 70% EtOH (46.33 mg TE/g) extracts displayed the highest DPPH radical scavenging result. Both these extracts, along with the aqueous one, exerted the highest ABTS radical scavenging result (73.03–73.56 mg TE/g). The EtOH and 70% EtOH extracts revealed the most potent anti-AChE (2.66 and 2.64 mg GALAE/g) and anti-glucosidase (1.07 and 1.09 mmol ACAE/g) activities. The aqueous extract was the most efficacious in inhibiting the proliferation of prostate cancer (DU-145) cells with an IC50 of 8.71 μg/mL and a Selectivity Index of 3.7. In conclusion, this study appraised the use of V. diversifolium aerial parts as a potential therapeutic source for future development of phytopharmaceuticals that target specific oxidative stress-linked diseases including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease among others. The author(s) declare that no financial support was received for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.Scopu
