    Interview with Bun Kobayashi Yoshimori

    Bun Kobayashi Yoshimori, the fourth child of six, was born on June 29, 1898. Her parents were farmers in Hiroshima-ken, Japan. She helped on the farm, learned sewing and weaving, and attended six years of school. In 1917, she arrived in the Islands to be the wife of Ryoji Yoshimori. She arrived aboard the Siberia-Maru, which docked in Honolulu; from Honolulu she boarded the Kinau bound for Ahukini, Kauaʻi. For four years, the Yoshimoris lived in Puhi. Later, they moved to New Mill camp in Kōloa. Ryoji did plantation field work and tended Waitā Reservoir. He retired in 1965. Bun did field work for a brief time, cared for their six children, and took in laundry work. Now widowed, Bun still resides in Kōloa. She is active in senior citizens' activities.     Synthesis of pyran and related natural products

    This study was aimed at preparing dihydropyrans (DHPs) for the synthesis of 2,6-disubstituted tetrahydropyrans (THPs) in a diastereoselective manner. In an attempt to develop a novel methodology for the synthesis of DHPs from δ-hydroxy-β-ketoester and thioamide in the presence of Lewis acid, unexpected dihydrothiopyran (DHT) formed as the sole product in the reaction instead of the expected DHP. A thorough investigation of the DHT forming-reaction showed that it is a promising method to synthesize 2,6-disubstituted DHT compounds. Various substituents at C2 and C6 positions were incorporated into the DHT by using different δ-hydroxy-β-ketoesters and thioamides. This methodology was applied to the first total synthesis of citreothiopyrane A in 4% yield over three steps. The synthesis of a number of citreothiopyrane A analogs with different substituents at C6 position was also achieved. N-heterocyclic carbene and quinuclidine were tested to promote the formation of δ-hydroxy-β-ketoesters form diketene, but the only product identified was the methyl acetoacetonate and stable quinuclidine-enolate respectively. In the investigation of (-)-apicularen A synthesis, it was proposed that the THP core could be accessed by the asymmetric Maitland-Japp reaction, using Chan’s diene and two synthesized aldehydes. However, it was found that the aldehyde with ketal protecting group is too unstable under Lewis acid condition. Further improvements are needed, such as using a more acid-stable protecting group, or by replacement of the aldehyde functionality

    The Large-Error Approximate Degree of AC^0

    We prove two new results about the inability of low-degree polynomials to uniformly approximate constant-depth circuits, even to slightly-better-than-trivial error. First, we prove a tight Omega~(n^{1/2}) lower bound on the threshold degree of the SURJECTIVITY function on n variables. This matches the best known threshold degree bound for any AC^0 function, previously exhibited by a much more complicated circuit of larger depth (Sherstov, FOCS 2015). Our result also extends to a 2^{Omega~(n^{1/2})} lower bound on the sign-rank of an AC^0 function, improving on the previous best bound of 2^{Omega(n^{2/5})} (Bun and Thaler, ICALP 2016). Second, for any delta>0, we exhibit a function f : {-1,1}^n -> {-1,1} that is computed by a circuit of depth O(1/delta) and is hard to approximate by polynomials in the following sense: f cannot be uniformly approximated to error epsilon=1-2^{-Omega(n^{1-delta})}, even by polynomials of degree n^{1-delta}. Our recent prior work (Bun and Thaler, FOCS 2017) proved a similar lower bound, but which held only for error epsilon=1/3. Our result implies 2^{Omega(n^{1-delta})} lower bounds on the complexity of AC^0 under a variety of basic measures such as discrepancy, margin complexity, and threshold weight. This nearly matches the trivial upper bound of 2^{O(n)} that holds for every function. The previous best lower bound on AC^0 for these measures was 2^{Omega(n^{1/2})} (Sherstov, FOCS 2015). Additional applications in learning theory, communication complexity, and cryptography are described
