Fiat e industria metalmeccanica in Basilicata: occupazione, imprese e sviluppo territoriale
Industrial action and working conditions in a green field site: the case of the FIAT-SATA assembly plant in southern Italy
This article analyses working conditions in the case of the Societa Automobilistica Tecnologia Avanzata (FIAT-SATA) assembly plant in southern Italy. It starts by reconstructing the reasons for building the new assembly plant in Melfi and the principles of the models of work organisation called 'integrated factory' and 'modular factory'. The analysis of working conditions is developed beginning from the reconstruction of the characteristics of the factory and of the organisational model. The research conducted noted the relationship between working conditions and the health risks that involve a large number of 'Workers with Reduced Work Capacity'. The article underlines the relationship between working conditions and industrial relations. Factory-level bargaining is analysed, from the participative model to the long strike of Spring 2004 with important implications for the improvement of working conditions
Introduzione
The Weakness of Car Manufacturing: Industries Associated with FIAT SATA, Alfa Romeo and FMA Powertrain in the South of Italy
At the end of the 1990s, Fiat’s car production, excluding foreign production, was increasingly concentrated at the Group’s southern factories, due to the increase in the productive capacity of the factories built in the seventies, as well as the more recent construction of the new SATA factory at Melfi, and the FMA at Avellino for the production of engines; not to mention the acquisition of Alfa Romeo in 1986 and its plant at Pomigliano d’Arco, which has gradually absorbed the production of Milan’s Arese plant. In the framework of a progressive increase in the number of cars produced in the southern Italian factories, to the disadvantage of the historical Mirafiori factory in Turin, and the reduction of the volume of production in Italy, car linked industries are still concentrated above all in the northern regions. Car manufacturing in the nineties was also characterized by the growth of external supply lines, both in planning and in the complementary production of components and systems for manufacturers; moreover, in the case of FIAT, the agreement with GM led to the birth of two companies, Powertrain (engine manufacturing) and Purchasing, which were fundamental in the area of supplies
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
