The "present" of the past : persistence of ethnicity in built form
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1989.Supervised by Ronald B. Lewcock.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 118-121).The subject of this thesis was generated by the prevailing social situation in the city of Karachi, where many communities and ethnic groups co-exist in ethnically defined areas. At the beginning of the research it was clear that a study of the importance of kinship and communal living in the perpetuation of traditions and in the development of cultures would have to be included. The endurance of ethnicity in realized built form became the crux of the entire study. In tracing back the infiltration of the muhajirs into Pakistan's prime city of Karachi and its impact on domestic spatial planning, this inquiry attempts to explore the influencing factors in cross-ethnic differences and to a certain extent trans-class similarities. A number of aspects make this entire exercise curiously stimulating and intellectually invigorating: - Inadequate existing literature on the relationship between culture and built form in this context. - The presence of a great variety of ethnic influences in Karachi that add many dimensions to the richness of diversity and similarities. -Reflection of these in the every-day architecture which is constantly being created by the people and the professionals. The thesis, while establishing its theoretical framework on cultural interpretations, uses structuralists' perspective to view the case studies in order to ascertain the many influencing aspects of ethnicity and cultural continuity in the context of Karachi. The case studies are based on first hand data compiled by the author through site visits, which involved surveys of houses built by the people, observations of uses of various spaces within the houses, and interviews with residents. These are supported by oral information obtained in discussion with people in the field, and by existing documented information wherever available. On analyzing these data many reflections surfaced which centered around the cultural endurance and persistence of ethnicity in built form.by Khadija Jamal.M.S
Is Morocco an attractive destination for foreign investors looking to invest in the residential real estate segment?
Thesis (S.M. in Real Estate Development)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Real Estate Development in Conjunction with the Center for Real Estate, 2011.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 53-54).Over the last decade, Morocco has witnessed an accelerated process of political, economic and social reforms aimed at improving the business climate and solidifying the economic indicators. Morocco's structural reforms share the objective of positioning the country as an attractive investment destination. The impact of these reforms has been felt in many sectors particularly real estate which has been developing at phenomenal rates in recent years. Aware of the great strides that Morocco has taken to position the country as an attractive investment destination, many foreign real estate developers expressed their interest to participate in the real estate sector. However, the financial crisis forced these developers to revise their business plans and put their projects on hold. Structured into three sections, the thesis aims to answer the question of: Is Morocco an attractive destination for foreign investors looking to invest in the residential real estate segment? The first chapter introduces the country and highlights key social and economic reforms which establish Morocco as a growing emerging economy whose government is proactively introducing investor-friendly reforms, incentives and programs. The second chapter presents an analysis of the housing sector, its demand drivers and supply indicators. A market segmentation is then performed which coupled with a market analysis, case studies and interviews, reveals that the low income segment is the best segment to target for investment. The third chapter sheds light on the evolution of foreign direct investments in the real estate sector. It proceeds to identify the differences between the local and foreign developers in terms of focus, strategy and profitability as well as outline key measures that the Moroccan government should take in order to encourage foreign participation in the sector. The paper concludes with a summary of findings and an investment framework for future developers looking to participate in what seems to be a lucrative and rewarding sector.by Khadija Oubala.S.M.in Real Estate Developmen
Estimation of Distribution of Income in Pakistan, Using Micro Data
Income distribution entered the post war discussion of economic development fairly late. Until the 1960s much of the focus was on industrialisation and the need for capital accumulation. Pakistan was no exception as in the early 60s economic expansion became the main target and means to political identity. Rapid population growth associated with steep decline in mortality demanded acceleration of production to keep pace. Overall aggregate expansion was much faster than before but without benefit for the poor. In that context emerged a new professional interest in income distribution. Haq’s (1964) study was one of the oldest studies conducted to measure inequality in personal income distribution in the high income brackets in the urban areas of Pakistan. The main objective of the author was to present the income distribution pattern in terms of the relative shares of different income groups as well as in terms of Pareto coefficients and concentration ratio during the period 1948-49 to 1957-58 for which published tax data was available. While recognising the limitations of the data used, the author went on to calculate various measures of income inequality including Pareto coefficient and Lorenz curve. The author also made comparison of Pakistan’s income distribution with U.S.A. and U.K.

BOOK REVIEW: THE FIFTH ESTATE: THINK TANKS, PUBLIC POLICY AND GOVERNANCE
The book is all-inclusive research on think tanks’ role in governance and public policy processes, specifically in the US. The author defines Fifth Estate as attributed to research institutes, scholarly networks, political parties and policy analysts. The comprehensive role of think tanks is due to their lasting impact on governance and the administration of global civil society. Their ever-increasing role and involvement in public policy discourse are unlikely to lessen in coming times
Co-location within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Co-location as a tool within the CRE strategy and as part of the CRE portfolio that adds more value to the organization
Problem definition: There is a gap in the literature on co-location: no literature is found on the use of co-location between third parties and governmental organizations (external co-location). Co-location is already being implemented within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). However, co-location has remained as a vague concept within MFA ever since its introduction. There is no strategy backing the concept; only some guidelines have been developed for more clarity from an operational perspective. Besides, the policy takes an opposing stance: a no, unless.. policy. Due to this concept's vagueness, co-location adds limited value to MFA. On the other hand, the number of co-locations indicates there is a clear need for the concept. Research objective: The objective of this thesis is to help the primary process of MFA achieve their goals and add more value with a better implementation of co-location by using the step-by-step plan developed in this research. The step-by-step plan with best actions/practices can be used to select the most suitable co-location alternative (with the decision tree and SWOT analysis) and improve the implementation of co-location as a CRE intervention (with the success formula); Consequently, more value is added to the organization. The main research question central in this thesis is: How can co-location be used as a tool within the CRE strategy and as part of the CRE portfolio that adds more value to the organization, specifically in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Research method: With the use of a hybrid research method, in which elements of operational, theoretical, and empirical research are incorporated, the answer to the main research question was obtained. The first part of the research method used was establishing the theoretical background on co-location and adding value. This knowledge establishment formed the basis of the following parts of the thesis. For the second part, an analysis of the current situation within the Ministry of Foreign affairs completed: strategic analysis of the general situation (stakeholder demands, corporate strategy, CRE strategy, Etc.) and an assessment of the current co-location cases (incorporates the empirical elements of the research). This assessment was completed using surveys (to assess the performance and perception) and interviews to develop an anecdotal success formula. The final part of this thesis incorporates the operational elements of the hybrid research method. The obtained information from the previous parts was combined for the development of a step-by-step plan to improve the current situation of co-location within MFA. Findings and conclusion: The developed step-by-step plan consists of the following products: a decision tree and SWOT analysis that both can be used to select the best co-location alternatives of a particular co-location embassy/consulate, based on the demands and objectives of MFA and the embassy/consulate. After selecting an alternative, the step-by-step plan's success formula can then be used as a tool to manage the implementation process. The last part of the step-by-step plan is needed to assess and, if needed, readjust the co-location after the implementation: the check and act phase. For assessing the co-location cases, a recommendation list of possible KPI's per demand (including the objectives) and the related adding value parameters are provided.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science
La narrativa di Maria Messina : una voce per le vittime di un universo soffocante
My thesis focuses on the narrative work of Maria Messina (Palermo 1887 - Pistoia 1944), a Sicilian author who belongs to category of forgotten writers. It deals with a critical interpretation of Maria Messina’s narrative work. In the first part, I propose a detailed biographical study of the author by examining, through a theoretical and textual perspective, her sharing the literary principles of the Verismo literary movement and by analyzing her epistolary correspondences. I then engage with a diachronical study of her whole narrative production by classifying and summarizing the content of her works. Finally, I consider the critical fortune of Maria Messina, that is, how her work was understood and interpreted by critical scholarship. In the second part of my thesis, I describe the different typologies of Messina’s characters and I study, by means of an in-depth textual analysis of her narrative, their representation in terms of victims within the “suffocating society” in which they live. In particular, I focus on Messina’s female characters, the representation of which documents the female condition at Messina’s time.In the third and last part of my work, I examine, by means of a textual analysis again, the way in which Messina gave voice to her characters, allowing them to become aware and denounce their condition of subalternity.
