The article remembers the late friend by interweaving personal memories with a profile of Claudio Venza’s research activity as a historian of anarchism and the Spanish Civil War. In particularly it dwells on the years of most intense collaboration in the common editorship of the journal Spagna contemporanea since 1992, highlighting the background and contribution of the friend

OPPOSING EFFECTS OF ASCORBATE ON COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN DEPOSITION IN THE NEONATAL RAT AORTA
Ascorbic acid plays an important role in connective tissue metabolism, where, among other effects, it acts as a reducing factor in the reactions catalyzed by prolyl and lysyl hydroxylases. In vitro, ascorbic acid has been shown to have a positive influence on collagen synthesis at pre- and/or post-translational levels and a negative effect on elastin production. In the present work, the effects of vitamin C on extracellular matrix deposition have been studied in vivo. Stereological analysis on electron micrographs showed, compared to age-matched controls, a 50 to 60% increase of collagen deposition in the media and in the adventitia of the aorta of rats treated for 30 days from the 18th day of life with 10% ascorbate in their drinking water. By contrast, elastin volume density was significantly reduced by the treatment at all ages examined. These morphological data were supported by in situ hybridization observations showing enhanced collagen type I mRNA and reduced elastin mRNA expression upon treatment. Although vitamin C did not inhibit lysyl oxidase activity in vivo, being only slightly higher than in controls, enzyme activity was significantly reduced, when high doses of ascorbate were added in vitro. Lysyl oxidase activity may be a function of enhanced collagen metabolism rather than a direct effect of the vitamin on the enzyme activity. These data indicate that ascorbate exerts opposite effects on the deposition of two major components of the extracellular matrix in vivo, at least during periods of rapid growth
Ab initio computation of atomic and molecular polarizability
An efficient algorithm for computing atomic and molecular polarizability is described and the computer code is made available
Design and optimization of a multi-port applicator for microwave assisted foaming
The use of numerical simulation to design a microwave applicator dedicated to foaming is presented. During foaming, the load characteristics change, both in terms of permittivity, thermal properties and size and shape. The use of a growth law able to describe size and characteristics variations of the load as microwave heating proceeds allowed to determine the most suitable microwave source arrangement able to provide both good energy efficiency and heat generation homogeneity. Load shape variations are neglected, assuming that expansion occurs with shape retention. Despite its simplified nature, the model allows to compare different scenarios of microwave applicator geometry, showing the advantages of the multi-physics approach adopted. The designed applicator was built and tested, showing the feasibility at the industrial scale of rapid microwave foaming of starch based products of complex shape
“Dialogue between Translators and Authors. The Example of Claudio Magris”
The paper focuses on the forms of cooperation between authors and their translator(s) in all cases in which the two operate simultaneously. This issue is explored on the example of the Trieste-born author Claudio Magris, who cultivates a very close relationship with most of his translators.
Writing and translation have been coexisting in this author throughout his career and have resulted in the heightened sensitivity of Magris the author with regards to translation, as the first part of the analysis shows. The second part describes the dialogue between Magris and the translators of his works, and ends with the more general question of the significance and role of such a form of exchange
Consideraciones sobre la poética de Claudio Rodríguez
The purpose of this paper is to study the poetics of Claudio Rodríguez, delimiting its components and trying to clarify them and to present them as a whole. The author left some pages written on his conception of poetry that encourage reflection and, in some cases, interpretation. So with his conception of poetry as a gift and inebriation, as an alliance and condemnation or celebration (giving title to his collections of poems), or with notions such as «participation», «living contemplation», «living expression » or «personal rhythm» that make up his way of understanding the poetic process.
Ischaemic mitral valve regurgitation: a surgical approach
The aim of this study IS to determine surgical results after surgical mitral valve repair in ischaemic mitral regurgitation. Materials and methods: Between January 1999 and June 2000, 64 patients (5.1% of overall patients) underwent myocardial revascularization and mitral valve surgery. A Cosgrove-Edwards mitral annuloplasty ring was used in 59 cases (92.2%). Average patient age was 64.3±12.4 years (38 males, 21 females). Average degree of mitral regurgitation was 2.8±0.6. Average NYHA class was 3.5±0.5. Average ejection fraction (EF) was 40±12.5 percent. Results: Post-operative 30-day mortality was 3.4% (2 patients). The follow-up was complete for 95 percent (mean 20.4±4.8 months for patients)and data showed an improvement of NYHA class (mean value 1.8±0.2) (p=0.01) and ejection fraction (mean value 51.7±10.2) (p=0.05) with residual mitral regurgitation value of 0.6±0.7. Conclusions: Mitral valve repair in coronary artery disease improves left ventricular function, quality of life and survival rate with low operative risk. Perioperative transesophageal echocardiography has a central role in surgical decision making
