Systems Prototyping in CAMILA
From school physics we got used to a basic problem solving strategy: create a mathematical model, reason on it, calculate a solution. The Camila approach is an attempt to make such a strategy available at the software engineering level. Based on a notion of formal software component it encompasses a settheoretic notation, a prototyping environment, fully connectable to external applications and equipped with communication facilities, and an inequational refinement calculus. Camila aims to be both a learning tool for Computer Science students and a working tool for software engineers. At the first level it provides a smooth way to programming. At the second a rigorous way to develop complex systems and to promote the use of formal methods in software industry. These lecture notes are intended to support a one-week seminar on Systems Prototyping lectured by the first author as part of the Systems Design course of the Computer Systems Engineering degree at the University of Bristol (UK). Coming to Trans/Writing: Camila Sosa Villada’s Transvestite Autobiographical Narrative
The myth of Camila O'Gorman in the works of Juana Manuela Gorriti, María Luisa Bemberg, and Enrique Molina
Camila O'Gorman, a transgressive aristocratic woman who proudly defied the values of Family, Church, and Society in nineteenth-century Argentina, was executed beside her lover, the priest Ladislau Gutiérrez. Since her execution by dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, her life and death represent a myth of rebellion and repression in the Argentine imagination, inspiring many works of literature and film. This dissertation studies three major works inspired by her life: the short story "Camila O'Gorman" (1876) by Juana Manuela Gorriti, the film Camila (1984) by María Luisa Bemberg, and the novel Una sombra donde sueña Camila O'Gorman (1973) by Enrique Molina. It proposes that each author shaped the images of the female protagonist by imprinting on the character of Camila the authors' personal reaction to the political climate in which they lived. Roland Barthes's Mythologies marks the main theoretical frame and distinctive theories on nationalism, narrative, film and genre are also applied. Chapter One situates the political climate of Camila's contemporary life. It studies the mythologies created to support and undermine Rosas' power. Moreover, it gives an account of three women who actively participated in politics: Mariquita Sánchez, Encarnación Ezcurra, and Manuela de Rosas. Chapter Two studies Gorriti as a nation builder. Her story "Camila O'Gorman" reinforces the ideals of a liberal progressive nation. By portraying Camila as a negative symbol, Gorriti adheres to the conservative view on women. Chapter Three inserts the life and work of Bemberg into the development of politics in Argentina. The film Camila addresses the parallel violence of the military regime in the 1980's. The character of Camila is portrayed as a defiant daughter, complying with the feminist views of the eighties. Chapter Four addresses Molina's Surrealist ideals, which determined his poetic analysis of Argentine history, foreshadowing the Proceso dictatorship. In his novel, Camila is represented as a Surrealist muse, who seeks liberty, love and poetry. The historical analogies recovered by the authors lead one to conclude that mythologies of Camila O'Gorman reappear in Argentina in times of political change and debate the rank of women in society.Spanish and Portugues
Microbial enrichment culture responsible for the complete oxidative biodegradation of 3‑Amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO), the reduced daughter product of the insensitive munitions compound 3‑Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO)
3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) is one of the main ingredients of many insensitive munitions, which are being used as replacements for conventional explosives. As its use becomes widespread, more research is needed to assess its environmental fate. Previous studies have shown that NTO is biologically reduced to 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO). However, the final degradation products of ATO are still unknown. We have studied the aerobic degradation of ATO by enrichment cultures derived from the soil. After multiple transfers, ATO degradation was monitored in closed bottles through measurements of inorganic carbon and nitrogen species. The results indicate that the members of the enrichment culture utilize ATO as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. As ATO was mineralized to CO₂, N₂, and NH₄⁺, microbial growth was observed in the culture. Co-substrates addition did not increase the ATO degradation rate. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the organisms that enriched using ATO as carbon and nitrogen source were Terrimonas spp., Ramlibacter-related spp., Mesorhizobium spp., Hydrogenophaga spp., Ralstonia spp., Pseudomonas spp., Ectothiorhodospiraceae, and Sphingopyxis. This is the first study to report the complete mineralization of ATO by soil microorganisms, expanding our understanding of natural attenuation and bioremediation of the explosive NTO.Journal ArticleFinal article publishe

The ecological niche, defined as the range of conditions and resources necessary for the persistence of a species. Among several niche dimensions, the trophic niche is amongst the most commonly measured dimension, as it represents a key aspect for species survival. The use of different techniques for diet analysis may provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of coexistence among species. Thrushes (Turdus spp.) are globally distributed and frequently sympatric species, with similar diets, and with an important role in the maintenance of the biodiversity in restinga forests, through the dispersion of seeds within and between fragments. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanisms of coexistence and partition of food resources of three Turdus species. Three methodologies for analysis of diet composition were used: fecal analysis, stable isotopes, and network analysis based on both diet and isotopes. The present study showed that there is resource partition between the three thrush species, which corroborates the hypothesis that there would be a niche overlap between species. The studied thrushes had a predominantly frugivorous diet. From the network analysis it can be observed that thrushes consume almost all food items, characterizing themselves as generalists. C3 fruits were one of the most important items in networks, because they had strong connections, for all three thrush species. Based on the high fruit consumption detected in the three analyzes, thrushes showed to be important seed dispersers, and thus key for the maintenance of fragmented areas, as the passage of seeds through the digestive tract of the birds could facilitate their germination. As such, due to their ability to move between forest patches and human-altered areas, thrushes can contribute to the recovery of fragmented areas
