Perceived Hardness of Virtual Surface: A Function of Stiffness, Damping, and Contact Transient
Haptic rendering of virtual objects requires a model for the object's hardness. The classical spring-damper model is effective in resisting the user's penetration into the virtual surface, while a short vibratory transient signal superimposed at contact increases the user-perceived hardness. In this paper, we are concerned with the combined case: the perceived hardness of a virtual surface rendered by the spring-damper model with a contact transient, in the tool-mediated perception. We report three perceptual experiments conducted to clarify the effects of five rendering parameters - stiffness and damping (spring-damper model); and amplitude, frequency, and decay rate (contact transient). All the parameters except decay rate are shown to have statistically significant effects on the perceived hardness. We also present a psychophysical magnitude function of perceived hardness for the four significant parameters of stiffness, damping, amplitude, and frequency. This mathematical model helps virtual environment designs build the virtual surfaces of desired perceived hardness.1

Malaysian medical license examination (MMLE): is this a way froward?
Medical education in Malaysia is facing challenges related to the increasing number of local private
and foreign medical universities. The key issue is whether the system is producing doctors who have
adequate competencies for fundamental patient-centred care. The Malaysian Medical Licensing
Examination (MMLE) was proposed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as a common licensing
examination for which all graduates must sit prior to obtaining registration to practice. Currently, this
exam is only taken by Malaysian students graduating from foreign medical colleges. However, the local
Malaysian universities, both public and private, have different curricula for preparing undergraduates
for future housemanships. The question is whether the educational programs of these universities
are robust enough in delivering curricula that produce safe and competent doctors. Moving forward,
it must be determined whether there is a need for extending the Malaysian Medical Licensing
Examination (MMLE) to all graduates of both local and foreign medical universities, thereby creating
a marker of excellence by which to measure Malaysian education and practice
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Power Efficient Framework for Resource Utilization in Fog Computing
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are essential for a number of applications, including industrial automation and environmental monitoring. Optimizing power consumption to increase the network's operational efficiency and lifespan is one of the main issues with WSNs. power optimisation techniques in WSNs are compared with an emphasis on routing protocols and energy-saving protocols.
Different approaches, including clustering algorithms, nature-inspired optimisation methods, and cross-layer optimisations, have been investigated to achieve power optimisation. The effectiveness of various algorithms, including ant lion optimisation (ALO), k-means clustering, and other conventional techniques, is investigated in this study in terms of lowering energy consumption and extending network lifetime.
The proposed study examines how these algorithms affect the various WSN layers, especially the end device layer and the fog layer. By contrasting the proposed algorithm with well-known methods like energy-efficient cross-layer sensing clustering, Distributed and Morphological Operation-based Data Collection Algorithm (DMOA), and trust-based secure routing, a thorough evaluation of the proposed algorithm is carried out.
The comparative study reveals the significant improvements made by the proposed power optimisation algorithm through extensive simulations and performance analysis. The outcomes show how effective it is at cutting energy use and improving overall network performance. The study also clarifies the trade-offs between different power optimisation strategies and their effects on network scalability, reliability, and latency.
This study adds to the growing body of information on power optimisation for WSNs and offers helpful tips for academics and industry professionals working in the area. The results emphasise the significance of choosing suitable power optimisation methods based on particular application requirements and network characteristics
