    This chapter contains a brief biography and transcript of an interview with Silvia M. Staub-Bernasconi, a leader in Swiss social work education, who was awarded the Katherine Kendall Award of the International Association of Schools of Social Work in 2010, for her contribution to international social work education. After studies in social work in Zurich and the USA, she became a street worker with gangs and with migrants. Developing ideas about social work as an action science, concerned with sources of power as well as individuals, she focused on social work as a human rights profession, and was involved in developing a European doctoral programme, INDOSOW. Her experience of students who had been oppressed in many countries led her to teach social work by connecting biography with sociocultural contexts. In the future, social work must separate itself and neoliberal ideas, meeting its triple mandate for a science base combined with individual care and political and social concern.</p

    Holocenic shorelines and tectonic uplift of the island of Lipari (Aeolian Arc, Southern Italy)

    We discuss 2 succeeding phases in the evolution of Lipari island. At first, 8 orders of marine terraces were recognized on the ground of geomorphological, sedimentological and paleontological evidences. The U 234/U 238 dataings of the fossil shells recovered from terraces III and V have allowed to set the age of these ancient shorelines. These datings implemented with those from the literature, make the basis for the construction of an uplift/sinking diagram. From this latter it seems that a sinking has occurred approximately during the Eutyrrhenian. The subsequent rise took place at a rate of 0.73-0.33cm/yr

    Do fiscal variables affect fiscal expectations? Experiments with real world and lab data

    We generate observable expectations about fiscal variables through laboratory experiments using realworld data fromseveral European countries as stimuli.We compare a VAR model of expectations for data that is presented in a fiscal frame with one for neutrally presented data.We test the validity of the setup and find that participants understand the meaning of the fiscal variables, but also that their ability to perceive the correct characteristics of fiscal policy is limited. Expectations are consistent neither with rational nor with purely adaptive expectations, but instead follow an augmented-adaptive scheme

    Aging-associated genes and let-7 microRNAs: a contribution to myogenic program dysregulation in oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy

    Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a late-onset muscle disease caused by an abnormal (GCN) triplet expansion within the polyadenylate-binding protein nuclear 1 gene and consequent mRNA processing impairment and myogenic defects. Because a reduced cell proliferation potential and the consequent regeneration failure of aging muscle have been shown to be governed by lethal-7 (let-7) microRNA-mediated mechanisms, in the present study, we evaluated the role of let-7 in the pathogenesis of OPMD. By a multidisciplinary approach, including conf ocal microscopy, Western blot, and quantitative PCR analyses on muscle biopsies from patients and unaffected individuals, we found a significant increase in let-7 expression in OPMD muscles associated with an unusual high percentage of paired box 7–positive satellite cells. Furthermore, IL-6, a cytokine involved in the regulation of satellite cell proliferation and differentiation and a potential target of let-7, was found strongly down-regulated in OPMD compared with control muscles. The decrease in IL-6 transcript levels and protein content was also confirmed in vitro during differentiation of patients' and controls' muscle cells. Overall, our data suggest a key role of let-7 in the regeneration and degeneration process in OPMD muscle and pointed to IL-6 as a potential target molecule for new therapeutic approaches for this disorder.—Cappelletti, C., Galbardi, B., Bruttini, M., Salerno, F., Canioni, E., Pasanisi, M.     Redistribution or education?: the political economy of the social race

    In an overlapping generations model with two social classes, rich and poor, parents of the different social classes vote on two issues: redistributive policies for them and education investments for their kids. Public education is the engine for growth through its effect on human capital; but it is also the vehicle through which kids born from poor families may exchange their positions with kids born from rich families. This is because education reduces the probability of the mismatch, i.e. individuals with low talent but coming from rich families being placed in jobs which should be reserved to people with high talent (and vice-versa). We find a political economy equilibrium of the voting game using probabilistic voting. When the poor are more politically influent, the economy is characterized by a higher level of education, growth and social mobility than under political regimes supported by the rich; pretax inequality is greater in the first case, but post-tax is lower

    Therapeutically targeting SELF-reinforcing leukemic niches in acute myeloid leukemia: A worthy endeavor?

    A tight relationship between the acute myeloid leukemia (AML) population and the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment has been convincingly established. The AML clone contains leukemic stem cells (LSCs) that compete with normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for niche occupancy and remodel the niche; whereas, the BM microenvironment might promote AML development and progression not only through hypoxia and homing/adhesion molecules, but also through genetic defects. Although it is still unknown whether the niche influences treatment results or contains any potential target for treatment, this dynamic AML-niche interaction might be a promising therapeutic objective to significantly improve the AML cure rat

    ET is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder rarely evolving into AML, sometimes preceded by a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Such transformations mostly occur in patients treated with radiophosphorous (32P) or alkylating agents, especially busulfan. Recently, concern has also arisen about the long-term safety of hydroxyurea (HU). Pipobroman (PI), a well tolerated and simple to use drug, constitutes a valid alternative to those cytoreductive treatments. The present study reports on 155 ET patients treated at our institution from 1985 to 1995, and monitored until December 2000. A good control of thrombocytosis was achieved with PI as the only treatment in 106 patients and with HU in 23 patients. Twenty-six patients received no treatment. After a median follow-up of 104 months, seven patients (four treated with HU, and three with PI) developed AML whereas one patient treated with PI developed MDS. A significant difference in progression-free survival was observed between HU- and PI-treated patients (P = 0.004). A short-arm deletion of chromosome 17 was most frequently detected in HU-treated patients, while a long-arm trisomy of chromosome 1 and a monosomy 7q were seen in PI-treated patients. No TP53 mutation was discovered in the six patients studied (two HU-treated and four PI-treated). We conclude that these cytogenetic abnormalities are not linked to the natural history of the disease, but rather that they might be induced by the cytoreductive treatment
