ANTIMICROBIAL DITERPENES FROM THE SEEDS OF CEPHALOTAXUS HARRINGTONIA VAR. DRUPACEA

    No full text
Six diterpenes, including two new natural products, were isolated from the seeds of Cephalotaxus harringtonia. The new metabolites were characterised as 8β-hydroxy-9(11),13-abietadien-12-one and 5,6-didehydroferruginol, while the known compounds were identified as ferruginol, sugiol, 6,12-dihydroxyabieta-5,8,11,13-tetraen-7-one, and abieta-8,11,13-trien-7β-ol. These compounds were studied in vitro for their antimicrobial activity against clinically isolated bacteria and Candida strains. Ferruginol and 6,12-dihydroxyabieta-5,8,11,13-tetraen-7-one showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. None of the six diterpenes was active against the Gram-negative organisms and yeasts tested

New case of acute hepatitis following the consumption of Shou Wu Pian, a Chinese herbal product derived from Polygonum multiflorum.

A case report of hepatotoxicity after consumption of Shou Wu Pian (an herbal remedy obtained from Polygonum multiflorum) by a 78-year-old Italian man is described. Symptoms were jaundice, nausea, abdominal pain, yellow skin, and dark urine. Physical examination revealed moderate hepatomegaly. Laboratory results showed high levels of bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, and alkaline phosphatase. Serologic and virologic markers for hepatitis A, B, C, and E viruses were negative. Blood samples were negative for hepatitis C virus RNA, hepatitis G virus RNA, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein–Barr virus. Autoimmune, metabolic, or other hepatotoxic causes were excluded. Clinical and laboratory measures improved rapidly after the patient discontinued using the herbal product. Quality control of preparation found no substitution or contamination of the product, which suggests that hepatotoxicity is related to the chemical components of the product and the manner of its use. The major constituents of P. multiflorum are polyphenols and anthraquinones. After intestinal metabolism, anthraquinones are transformed in anthrones. These highly reactive substances, when absorbed, can damage the liver

In vitro anti-HIV activity of oleanolic acid on infected human mononuclear cells

    No full text
The effect of oleanolic acid on the growth of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) in cultures of human peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMC) and of monocyte/macrophages (M/M) is described. The inhibitory activity was also evaluated on PBMC obtained from HIV-1 infected patients. Oleanolic acid inhibited the HIV-1 replication in all the cellular systems used. As regards the mechanism of action, oleanolic acid inhibited the HIV-1 protease activity in vitr

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
