Influence of postharvest hot-dip fungicide treatments on 'Redblush' grapefruit quality during long-term storage

The efficacy of postharvest hot-dip treatment on Redblush grapefruit was investigated by 3-min dips in water at 50°C and 20°C, with and without 1500 ppm imazalil (IMZ) or thiabendazole (TBZ). Fruits were stored for 16 weeks in cold rooms at 8°C and then held at 20°C for 1 week to simulate shelf life. IMZ and TBZ treatment at 20°C considerably reduced the incidence of chilling injury (by about 50-60%) and the percentage (by 20%) of fungal infections. The effectiveness of the two fungicides was found to be considerably increased at 50°C. However, the beneficial effect of hot-dip treatment was noted, whether or not associated with the use of fungicides. The chilling index was threefold lower in fruit dipped in water at 50°C. Similar results were obtained by IMZ treatment and mold decay was decreased by about 50%. IMZ treatment at 50°C proved to be phytotoxic, thus resulting in reddish peel pitting, starting on the fourth week of storage. No further detrimental heat-related effect was detected in the remaining cases. Fruit treated with the two fungicides exhibited no significant differences in respiration rate under cold storage, when compared to control. By contrast, by the end of shelf life, sharply increased values were found in fruit treated with IMZ at 20°C. Endogenous ethylene production and internal quality attributes (juice%, total soluble solid content, juice acidity, and ripening index) did not reveal important differences between treatments. Ethanol concentration in the juice was remarkably lower in fruit treated with the two fungicides, whereas differences due to dip temperature were negligible in most cases

Villa Beuca Municipal Botanic Gardens were inaugurated on june 2001. They are located on the Beuca Hill (Municipality of Cogoleto near to Genova) and are aimed to valorize and preserve the diversiy of the Ligurian flora, to develop didactic training in Botany, and to contribute to the therapy of patients with social and psychological troubles. In the recent five years these Botanic Gardens are managed by the little social co-operative society “Il giunco”. The collaboration of the Local Mental Autorithy with this Co-op and the partecipation of the patients to the life of the Botanic Gardens allow significant amelioration of the patient conditions. The natural appearance of the Villa Beuca Botanic Gardens and the social-psychological well-being of the patients grow together as a “landscape” of social and natural interactions

Effects of physical, mechanical and hormonal treatments of seed-tubers on bud dormancy and plant productivity

The aim of this study was to develop a technique easy to apply in order to induce seed-tuber dormancy breakage. Over a two-year study, more than seven dormancy-breaking treatments were tested through evaluating different temperature effects alone or combined with gibberellins application, cutting in half of seed-tubers, and early haulm killing. Three varieties per year were considered: Spunta and Monalisa (medium and long dormancy) in both years, Europa during the first year and Arinda during the second year (both characterized by a short dormancy period). We found firstly that Europa and Arinda promptly responded to thermal treatments, and secondly to the same thermal treatments in combination with the application of gibberellins. Although not easily applicable, especially when a large volume of seed-tubers has to be handled (seed-tuber producers), the cutting in half of the seed-tubers also had a satisfactory result. Notwithstanding that treatments did not perfectly overlap between the two experiments, results were qualitatively similar. Therefore, these findings allow us to conclude that treatment with post-harvest storage at 20 ◦C, followed by a treatment with gibberellic acid at 38 days from harvesting, is the most efficient in releasing dormancy, in ensuring a good vegetative growth and productive performance at field-level irrespective of the variety

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
