Forensic evaluation: A strategy for and results of an impact evaluation of a universal labor market program - The Swedish activity guarantee

    No full text
To evaluate the effects of a universal program, i.e. all targeted get access, is associated with the problem that there are no individuals who represent the hypothetical or counterfactual state of being eligible to the program but not participating in it. In this study of a Swedish universal labor market program the Activity Guarantee we show how regional differences in the implementation of instructions on assignment to the program were utilized to create a control group representing the counterfactual state. After having gained access to a treatment and a control group, the authors evaluated the effects of the program on the probability of leaving unemployment and on the duration of unemployment. The effects estimated were statistically significant and indicate a clear positive effect of program participation.

This work presents a proposal for control (generation) of oscillations on switched systems. Based in a nonlinear oscillator form, a controller design methodology is proposed to obtain stable autonomous oscillations in dynamic systems (without using external reference signals). The results obtained by means of simulation of buck, boost and double boost converters and an inverter demonstrate the proposed method validity. Experimental results concerning the inverter and the boost converter permits to validate the proposed methodology

An Improved Optimal Slip Ratio Prediction considering Tyre Inflation Pressure Changes

    No full text
The prediction of optimal slip ratio is crucial to vehicle control systems. Many studies have verified there is a definitive impact of tyre pressure change on the optimal slip ratio. However, the existing method of optimal slip ratio prediction has not taken into account the influence of tyre pressure changes. By introducing a second-order factor, an improved optimal slip ratio prediction considering tyre inflation pressure is proposed in this paper. In order to verify and evaluate the performance of the improved prediction, a cosimulation platform is developed by using MATLAB/Simulink and CarSim software packages, achieving a comprehensive simulation study of vehicle braking performance cooperated with an ABS controller. The simulation results show that the braking distances and braking time under different tyre pressures and initial braking speeds are effectively shortened with the improved prediction of optimal slip ratio. When the tyre pressure is slightly lower than the nominal pressure, the difference of braking performances between original optimal slip ratio and improved optimal slip ratio is the most obvious

    Let’s play with Le Corbusier

[EN] The research focuses on the possibility of transferring theoretical ideas of Le Corbusier into educational programs of the very young children – between three and six. The worldwide development of civilization changed the natural environment of the human. For the average European citizen a city is more natural place for living than a forest. Simultaneously, in these days many inhabitants present an extremely conformist approach to life and to the surrounding space. The participation of members of the society in the shaping of public spaces is possible only through the involvement and practice, but the democratic responsibility does not appears out of nowhere. It must be fostered and nurtured as early as in childhood. According to developmental psychology, children in the age of 3-6 are very susceptible to the acquisition of new skills and learn it in an intuitive way. The proper education program using Le Corbusier’s lectures and theory could help them to understand the space better. The seeming simplicity of above rules is an advantage in this case – thereby it can be explained to even such an audience as small children. On the other hand, some kind of abstract and hidden difficulty included in this theory becomes an opportunity to create a very absorbing and stimulating workshops that follow the needs of younger and older children. Le Corbusier’s legacy includes not only physical issues and can be used in many different ways. As Pablo Picasso once stated: every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up. Let’s play with Le Corbusier. Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major global health challenge with approximately 250–350 mil- lion chronically infected individuals. An improved understanding of the demographic fea- tures and outcomes of chronic HBV infection and hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection in low- endemic areas may improve prevention, early identification and management both at indi- vidual and community levels. Here, we retrospectively analyzed the demographic and clini- cal characteristics, treatment rates and outcomes of adult patients with chronic HBV infection with or without HDV coinfection examined at Lausanne University Hospital, Swit- zerland over a 10-year period. Methods We analyzed the medical records of all adult patients with chronic HBV and HDV infection examined in our center between 2007 and 2016. Liver-related outcome was defined as the occurrence of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver transplantation or liver-related death. Analyses were performed using logistic regression and results were reported as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results Of 672 consecutive patients, 421 (62.6%) were male, median age was 36 years (interquar- tile range, 28–46 years), and 233 (34.7%) were of African origin. The prevalence of HDV coinfection was 7.1% and the proportion of anti-HDV-positive patients with detectable HDV RNA was 70.0%. In multivariate analysis, HDV coinfection was the strongest predictor for liver-related outcome (OR 6.06, 95% CI 2.93–12.54, p<0.001), followed by HBeAg positivity (OR 2.47, 95% CI 1.30–4.69, p = 0.006), age (OR per 10-year increase 2.03, 95% CI 1.63–2.52, accuracy of the multivariate model was high (receiver operator characteristic area under the curve 0.81). Conclusion This retrospective study underscores the importance of migration in the epidemiology of chronic hepatitis B in low-endemic areas. HDV coinfection, HBeAg positivity and age pre- dicted liver-related outcomes while female sex had a protective effect
