No full textIl motore dell’attuale “società del calcolo” (Cardon), e cioè i Big data e i software e gli algoritmi che li computano e calcolano, si regge su un principio di invisibilità che, tra le altre cose, riconfigura i rapporti tra esseri umani e tecnologie soprattutto in termini di percezione e comprensione delle seconde da parte dei primi. La “scatola nera” dei calcolatori rappresenta, in particolare, l’incarnazione di un limite (anche politico) alla possibilità di vedere e pensare la presenza della “macchina” che governa la nostra vita quotidiana, al di là degli effetti che essa produce. L’arte contemporanea ha tentato di reagire, spesso in modo polemico, a questa condizione: un lavoro orientato proprio a un superamento di questo limite visivo e, insieme, epistemologico, per mostrare l’operare dell’“intelligenza” della società del calcolo e dei dispositivi di rilevazione e osservazione su cui essa si fonda. Una produzione che mira, complessivamente, a sfondare un limite, per dare a vedere le “nuove immagini” dei big data e degli algoritmi, il modo in cui essi pensano, ci guardano e ci processano

B-cell restricted saporin immunotoxins: activity against B-cell lines and chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells
No full textB cell-restricted immunotoxins were constructed by conjugating anti-B monoclonal antibodies to saporin, the major ribosome inactivating protein from the seeds of the plant Saponaria officinalis. HD37-SAP is directed against CD19, the broadest B cell-specific determinant. HD39-SAP and HD6-SAP recognize two different epitopes on the CD22 molecule, an antigen present on the cell surface of B cells at late stages of differentiation. All three immunotoxins inhibited DNA synthesis and protein synthesis in target B lymphoma cells with a dose-related effect, in short incubation times and in the absence of potentiators. A clonogenic assay demonstrated that all immunotoxins could eliminate more than two logs of clonogenic malignant B cells with a two-hour incubation at concentrations not toxic to cells not bearing target antigens. The immunotoxin activity was evaluated by DNA synthesis inhibition in fresh B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells (B-CLL) stimulated to proliferate by incubation with an antibody specific for the receptor of C3b complement component (CR1) plus B cell growth factor. B-CLL cell DNA synthesis was actively inhibited by treatment at low immunotoxin concentration without need of potentiators. Immunotoxins exerted their effect also in whole blood of CLL patients under conditions achievable in vivo. We conclude that B cell-restricted immunotoxins HD37-SAP, HD39-SAP, and HD6-SAP are good candidates for in vivo therapy of B-cell malignancies

No full textThis essay focuses on the main transformations witnessed in contemporary American war cinema, which places itself between fiction and documentary, Hollywood cinema and independent productions, with an emphasis on the so-called “War on Terror”. More specifically, this study aims to offer an image-specific introduction to the historical and moral issues of contemporary American conflicts. As a consequence of the emergence of new media tools and of a new accessibility to images, war cinema is facing today the challenge of a total representability of war in every respect, both at the level of personal experience and subjectivity. On the one hand contemporary war cinema attempts to cope with the partial visibility derived from the images produced by the soldiers’ use of light technologies; on the other hand it displays a form of tactical and holistic visibility, which is never as distant as in today’s warfare, due to the introduction of remote-controlled missiles, satellites and drones. This kind of dual representation invites at least two questions: what images can be trusted today? And what role do they play in contemporary war narratives
