Book Review: Simon Hayhoe «Blind Visitor Experiences at Art Museums»
No full textThe review introduces the book “The Experience of Blind Visitors to Art Museums” by Simon Hayhoe, a famous philosopher and professor at the University of Bath (UK), and presents the experience of blind visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as well as the experience of blind artists such as Esref Armagan and others. The author tries to answer the following questions: why do blind people want to visit art museums if they cannot see the works of fine art and cannot even touch them? How do people whose vision is impaired or absent understand the fine arts if this comprehension is possible primarily through visual perception? What are the consequences of vision loss for a sense of self-identity in a cultural space? Simon Hayhoe believes that blind and visually impaired people enter the world of fine art due to the existence of another, non-sensory dimension. And the portal which connects the materiality of works of art with the world of non-verbal awareness is outside of perceptual knowledge. This “bridge” between conscious and nonverbal knowledge is described as a transition that is provided by the museum environment and by the knowledge of the pieces of art and the whole cultural context. The very atmosphere of museums, galleries, and cultural heritage sites promotes contact between the spiritual world of visitors and works of art.</p
Grounded theory and disability studies: an investigation into legacies of blindness
No full textWhy a book on a research study using grounded theory, a methodology that is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary? Although the theory has now been in existence for many years, there has never been a book recounting its application through numerous interconnected studies, as it was originally intended to be used. This book represents the first book-length cohesive narrative on how this method was rediscovered by a researcher over the course of a new series of studies, redeveloped in the context of a topic previously undisturbed, applied, poked around, and problems generated (with solutions to these found or not). There has never been a narrative on how a researcher sat down and worked through data over decades in order to evolve her or her own grounded theory and methodology about a specific phenomenon. This study is also a response to the need for a book that mixes the three traditional genres of the literature on methodology—many of which are cited and are themselves subjects—and also adds to a debate on research about research methods, by developing a case study of what it is like to be the human subject that is called the researcher as well as a pursuant of empirical methodology. The purpose of this book is to break a number of the conventions of research texts by writing an academic text on methodology as a case study of building case studies, one that cites classic works in the field and contains autobiographical considerations throughout its account, one that narrates the conscious process of designing a framework from the range of philosophies that were involved in chronicling this topic. Most importantly, however, this book has developed to be the story of being a human enquirer, one with a research and professional trajectory to work towards. This study also offers a wholly different approach by describing the processes and evolutions that brought the author Simon Hayhoe to develop what he terms a grounded methodology

Investigating the mechanism of impact and differential effect of the Quality Premium scheme on antibiotic prescribing in England: a longitudinal study
No full textBackground: In 2017, approximately 73% of antibiotics in England were prescribed from primary care practices. It has been estimated that 9%-23% of antibiotic prescriptions between 2013 and 2015 were inappropriate. Reducing antibiotic prescribing in primary care was included as one of the national priorities in a financial incentive scheme in 2015-2016. Aim: To investigate whether the effects of the Quality Premium (QP), which provided performancerelated financial incentives to clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), could be explained by practice characteristics that contribute to variations in antibiotic prescribing. Design & setting: Longitudinal monthly prescribing data were analysed for 6251 primary care practices in England from April 2014 to March 2016. Method: Linear generalised estimating equations models were fitted, examining the effect of the 2015-2016 QP on the number of antibiotic items per specific therapeutic group age-sex related prescribing unit (STAR-PU) prescribed, adjusting for seasonality and months since implementation. Consistency of effects after further adjustment for variations in practice characteristics were also examined, including practice workforce, comorbidities prevalence, prescribing rates of non-antibiotic drugs, and deprivation. Results: Antibiotics prescribed in primary care practices in England reduced by -0.172 items per STAR-PU (95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.180 to -0.171) after 2015-2016 QP implementation, with slight increases in the months following April 2015 (+0.014 items per STAR-PU; 95% CI = +0.013 to +0.014). Adjusting the model for practice characteristics, the immediate and month-on-month effects following implementation remained consistent, with slight attenuation in immediate reduction from -0.172 to -0.166 items per STAR-PU. In subgroup analysis, the QP effect was significantly greater among the top 20% prescribing practices (interaction p<0.001). Practices with low workforce and those with higher diabetes prevalence had greater reductions in prescribing following 2015-2016 QP compared with other practices (interaction p<0.001). Conclusion: In high-prescribing practices, those with low workforce and high diabetes prevalence had more reduction following the QP compared with other practices, highlighting the need for targeted support of these practices and appropriate resourcing of primary care.</p

Touching the Rock:An Experience of Blindness (1990)
No full textTouching the Rock comprises the autobiographical reflections of Anglo-Australian theologian and educator John M. Hull in the period shortly after losing his sight, from summer 1983 to summer 1986. In the book, Hull discusses coming to terms with his impairment, his loss of memory of the visual, his damaged recollection of those things that were once familiar, and the diversity of reactions from those around him. Touching the Rock is a transcript of Hull's taped diary entries on various topics related to his blindness, including dream analyses; altered practices with familiar objects and the environment; reflections on sections of literature, including the Bible and other religious texts; his trials while forming a young family as a man without sight; and the kindness and cruelty of people during his initial three years of living in complete darkness.<br/

Discriminating between primary family financial managers and the other adult in the family: A gender perspective.
No full textThis study used a gender perspective to examine the intergender differences between male and female primary family financial managers and the intragender differences among females and among males of the primary family financial manager and the other adult in the family. The results of this study showed that researchers need to examine the differences of males and females in general when examining the differences between male and female primary family financial managers. Of the 20 variables employed in the discriminant analyses in this study, only the money attitude of power/spending differentiated between male and female primary family financial managers and not between males and females in general. However, the money attitude of power/spending did not differentiate among females or among males between the primary family financial manager and the other adult in the family. None of the paths to primary family financial manager in the structural equations model were significant. These results suggest there is need for further research to determine the intergender differences between male and female primary family financial managers and the intragender differences between the primary family financial manager and the other adult in the family. This study was a secondary analysis of data from Arizona and California collected as part of the NC-182 project, Family Resource Utilization as a Factor in Determining the Economic Well-Being in Rural Families. To be selected for the sample the couple had to be married so that there was a choice of a male or female as primary family financial manager. The sample consisted of 210 male primary family financial managers, 185 female primary family financial managers, 123 male other adults and 123 female other adults
