No full textThis book presents the first edition of Polish and Latin works by Stefan Javors’kyj (1658–1722), the leading author of Ukrainian literature of his time. The book contains four panegyrics dedicated to the Ukrainian political and ecclesiastical leaders, Hetman Ivan Mazepa and Metropolitan Barlaam Jasyns’kyj. In his masterful books, Javors’kyj combines emblems, lyric and epic poetry with prose in two languages. The edition will help to bring Ukrainian texts into the canon of early modern European literature and to recover an important fragment of literary history. Edited by Jakub Niedźwiedź and Bartosz B. No full textThe paper is devoted to comparison of polish translations of the chapter I. B. 1. of a document of the Papal Biblical Commission The Interpretation of Bible in Church by bishop K. Romaniuk (1994) and father R. Rubinkiewicz SDB (1999) to the French original from an angle of classical rhetorical terminology. A confrontation of the two translations of the document directly with their equivalents functioning in Polish scientific literature leads to a sad conclusion that both translators have been polonizing the analysed chapter of The Interpretation of Bible in Church most probably without reference both to the Roman theory of rhetoric, constituting a direct terminological source for the French original of the document and to the Polish tradition of research on rhetoric, which managed to work out adequate equivalents of Latin terms.</p

No full textThis edition presents a selection of 15 sermons by Stefan Javors’kyj (1658–1722), a Ukrainian poet and preacher of the late 17th century. His imagination, knowledge, and rhetorical skills made him one of the leading European writers of his time. For political reasons, his sermons remained in manuscript for over 300 years. The editors have painstakingly transcribed the Ukrainian texts and annotated them in English. The edition makes Javors’kyj’s works available to scholars who wish to broaden their knowledge of an unknown part of early modern European literature

No full textThe first praises of cities appear as early as in the archaic Greek poetry of Homer, Pindar, Solon and others, but the first praises of cities as an independent literary genre seem to be two speeches of Aelius Aristides (2nd century AD ): Panathenaikos and Encomium to Rome. The main ancient source of the theory of praise of cities is the treatise On Epideictic attributed to Menander Rhetor (late 3rd century AD ). Since Quintilian and Priscian pay only very little attention to the topoi of urban encomium, Menander’s theory seems to be the most important source also for such humanistic treatises on rhetoric as De inventione et amplificatione oratoria by Gerardus Bucoldianus and Essercitii di Aftonio Sofista by Orazio Toscanella.The aim of this article is to examine the classification of the praises of cities in Menander’s treatise On Epideictic, its reception in the 16th-century works of Bucoldianus and Toscanella and the relationships between these Renaissance texts. The examination of the theory of the urban encomium in these rhetorical treatises enables us to claim that chapters about the praise of cities in De inventione et amplificatione oratoria by Bucoldianus, incorporated in 1542 into Reinhard Lorich’s Scholia to Aphthonius and reedited with them more than 150 times, influenced other Renaissance theorists, including Toscanell
