Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd
This chapter discusses the life and work of Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd (1943–2010). Abu Zayd is part of a group of contemporary intellectuals from the Arabic-speaking part of the Muslim world known as the turāthiyyūn, or “heritage thinkers.” This strand of Islamic thinking developed in the 1970s and 1980s in response to the traumatic outcome of the 1967 war between Israel and the surrounding Arab countries. Abu Zayd advocated the rigorous scholarly investigation of the Quran using innovative methods and techniques of textual criticism and discourse analysis used in literary studies, which was considered anathema by Islamist activists and made him the target of persecution. Abu Zayd and his wife sought asylum abroad, and he has since been recognized internationally as a scholar who has made pioneering contributions to move the study of the Quran and of the wider Islamic intellectual legacy forward.</p
Identification of lti time-delay systems with missing output data using GEM algorithm
This paper considers the parameter estimation for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems in an input-output setting with output error (OE) time-delay model structure. The problem of missing data is commonly experienced in industry due to irregular sampling, sensor failure, data deletion in data preprocessing, network transmission fault, and so forth; to deal with the identification of LTI systems with time-delay in incomplete-data problem, the generalized expectation-maximization (GEM) algorithm is adopted to estimate the model parameters and the time-delay simultaneously. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2014 Xianqiang Yang and Hamid Reza Karimi

Institutional Approach to E-commerce: An Integrated Framework for Pakistan
Pakistan needs to knit itself into global information economy in order to ensure economic development. E-commerce is the essential tool through which this objective can be met. Currently, the economy is in a transition, the span of which needs to be shortened in order to meet the global challenges in the coming years. An institutional approach is essential to develop e-commerce. An appropriate institutional framework will shorten the time span of the transition period and will ensure a smooth transition to information economy. It will provide an effective and efficient use of the existing institutional infrastructure and development of new institutions. It calls for close coordination between the government, industry, and international organisations.
Unsupervised generative AI discovers pan-leukocyte dysregulated pathways in single-cell lupus data
<p>Comparisons of single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from healthy and diseased tissues are widely used to identify cell-type-specific dysregulated genes, pathways, and processes. Accordingly, many sophisticated methods have been developed for this purpose. However, such tools generally require considerable user expertise for optimal performance. Here, we show that unsupervised application of a linearly-decoded Variational Auto Encoder (a generative AI model) to scRNA-seq data recapitulates and extends findings from a seminal recent lupus study and leads to new insights. Thanks to existing software libraries, our approach is straightforward to implement, computationally efficient, methodologically robust, and produces consistent and reproducible results.</p>
