From Albania to Brazil: Ismail Kadaré's Broken april and its filmic adaptation, Walter Salles' Abril despedaçado
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Nitrate-nitrogen concentration variationin groundwater flow in a paddy field
Link to publisher's homepage at http://www.myiem.org.my/This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of groundwater on nitrate-nitrogen concentration in a paddy field. Fertiliser if applied excessively can cause leaching into the soil and will penetrate deep into the soil and eventually contaminate the groundwater. Nitrates in groundwater is soluble hazardous to users. This work was carried out at Ladang Merdeka Ismail Mulong, Kota Bharu, Kelantan to determine groundwater and nitrate-nitrogen flow using ArcGIS in a Geographical Information System (GIS) environment to produce groundwater level and nitrate concentration variation maps. All data were obtained from field measurements. The results showed that the average nitrate level was 4.81 mg/l with a maximum value of 17.16 mg/l. The groundwater levels in this area ranged from 3.75 to 6.52 meters above mean sea level with an average of 5.65 meters. Three dimensional images of ground surface and groundwater levels variation were also produced to study the relationship between groundwater and nitrate movement. From the analysis, it can be deduced that the groundwater and nitrate generally flows from the South-West to the North-East direction following the ground surface gradient

The use of derivatives to hedge risk for plantation and property companies in Malaysia / Mohamad Azwan Md Isa, Norashikin Ismail and Nor Hadaliza Abd Rahman
Global financial crisis during 2007-2009 had hit corporate sectors significantly. The corporations’ liquidity and profitability were affected so badly during the crisis that forced them to come up with hedging strategy to mitigate the risk. Hence, this study attempts to investigate the determinants corporations’ specific factors on the derivatives use among 71 Malaysian firms in the plantation and property sectors in hedging the risks. The study is divided into two sub-periods i.e. during financial crisis (2007-2009) and post financial crisis (2010-2012) using the public listed corporations at Bursa Malaysia and employing the Logistic Regression model. The findings revealed that growth opportunity of the corporations has significant impact on the derivatives use during the financial crisis whilst profitability and growth opportunity both contributed to the derivatives use post financial crisis. It is comfortably to say that the corporations with better growth and profitability tend to use the derivatives in hedging their risks. This is consistent with the risk management theory in order to mitigate underinvestment problem. Most importantly, this study indicates that the Malaysian firms in the two sectors are still risk averse as the derivatives use in hedging corporate risks is still at minimal level
Impact strength on thin-walled tubes
Access is limited to UniMAP community.Energy absorber has found common usage in application such as vehicle,
aircraft and at base of lift shaft. Circular thin-walled tubes had been years for
functioning as efficient energy absorbing devices but as decompose material-filled
circular thin walled tube is a new whole perspective as energy absorber for energy
absorbing devices to improve the opposing effects of impacts .So this research were to
open decompose material-filled tube to new door as energy absorber in common
application usage. The primary aim for this research was to generate research
information and design information on the impact behavior and energy absorption
capability of empty circular tubes and decompose material-filled circular tube to
facilitate their application in energy absorbing system. This conducted axial quasi static
bending test to investigate the energy absorption characteristic and deformation
behaviour of empty hollow, rice husk filled and saw dusk filled circular thin walled tube
and make comparisons with each other. The results showed that energy absorption
capacity and crush force efficiency of the thin-walled circular tube subjected to axial
loading depend on the filler in the tube. Results for empty hollow tube, rice husk filled
tube and saw dusk filled tube were compared, and the experiment confirms that energy
absorption of saw dust filled tube is better than rice husk filled tube and empty hollow
tube. The relationship between displacement and force, average force and total energy
absorption properties were obtained. Overall, this report highlights the decompose
materials- filled of circular tubes for new type of filler for absorbing impact energy

Board characteristics, firms’ specific factors and financial performance: evidences from ACE Market in Bursa Malaysia / Mohamad Azwan Md Isa, Nor Hazila Ismail and Maizura Mohd Isa.
Financial performance is of great importance that must be looked into particularly by a firm’s management, shareholders and lenders when analysing success or failure of the firm. It is also one of the crucial criteria, which must be examined by potential investors, government regulatory bodies and other stakeholders before deciding to make any decisions about the firm. Hence, this study aims to investigate the relationships and impacts of five (5) firms’ specific factors, namely diversified board members’ gender, board’s independence, the firm’s growth, leverage and market capitalization on firms’ financial performance, which is measured by return on asset (ROA) and Tobin-Q. This study applies the methods of descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and multiple regressions to test and analyse the selected variables. Using 210 firm-year panel data or observations for periods from year 2012 to 2017 of 35 firms listed in ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia, we have found that leverage and market capitalization are the two key factors that pose negative and positive significant influences on firms’ financial performance, respectively. These findings suggest that firms must strictly observe the optimal debt or leverage level as this will affect firms’ financial performance that eventually has impacts on firms’ value and shareholders’ wealth
Sustainability performance, ownership structures, and corporate financial stability of shariah-compliant companies in Malaysia / Mohamad Azwan Md Isa, Norashikin Ismail and Mohd Halim Kadri
The launching of the United Nation’s SDGs Agenda 2030 in 2015 has boosted sustainability practices among the corporate sectors. Since then, the studies related to corporate sustainability practices and financial performance have gained extensive interest among researchers and academics. Nonetheless, studies on the association between sustainability performance (SUSP) and corporate financial stability (CFS) are still scarce and the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between the SUSP and CFS focusing on the Shariah-compliant companies in Malaysia. In addition, this study attempted to investigate the moderating roles of different forms of ownership structures on the SUSP-CFS nexus. Using balanced panel data from 2021 to 2023, the Fixed Effect models as suggested by the Hausman test, indicate that the SUSP has mixed association with CFS. In addition, concentrated ownership has a negative but insignificant influence on the CFS whilst managerial ownership shows positive but insignificant influences on the CFS. In terms of moderating roles, concentrated ownership indicates a weakening effect on the SUSP-CFS association whilst managerial ownership poses a strengthening effect on the SUSP-CFS association. This study benefits the management of companies, investors and policymakers as well as enriching the body of knowledge on sustainability-financial stability literature. The corporate sectors need to sustainability practices through ESG initiatives in their strategic planning. The investors have to support the corporate sustainability practices by taking into account the sustainability factors in their investment decisions. Policymakers are to play more attentive roles in encouraging the corporate sectors in their sustainability practices by providing efficient infrastructure, robust ESG frameworks, and effective incentive packages. With these concerted efforts, the global SDGs agenda can be materialized successfully besides ensuring the financial stability of the Shariah-compliant companies in Malaysi
