This research uses the novel titled Zettai Seigi by Akiyoshi Rikako as the object of research. The purpose of this research is to analyze the social conflict and characterization of Takaki Noriko. The author uses the simak-catat method to collect the data and uses the content analysis method to analyze the data, afterwards the data were analyzed using Soekanto's theory of social conflict and Jauhari's theory of characterization of a literary figure. Based on the results of the analysis, Takaki Noriko has 14 forms of characterization. Then, the form of social conflict is personal conflict, and the cause of social conflict is due to differences in ways of thinking between individuals, application of truth by Noriko, Noriko's character who always demands perfection, and in ethics and moral terms. In this novel, the author of the novel wants to show the reader that when in society, don't be a person who demands perfection, always meddling in other people's business, and don't build a character like the one that Noriko has because it will interfere with the social life of others. Furthermore, the law was created as a means to educate the public, not to drag everything into the realm of law. Through this research, the author wants to show how to maintain harmony in society such as having tolerance and always respecting other people’s feelings
Phylogeography of Littorina brevicula suggests postglacial colonization from south to north along the Japanese Archipelago
Littorina brevicula is one of the most common gastropods in the supralittoral zone around Japan. The northernmost population of this species is around Hokkaido and the determinant of this northern limit is likely seawater and air temperature. To reconstruct an evolutionary history of this species, we investigated genetic differentiation among 12 populations (three from Hokkaido, six from Honshu and three from Kyushu) using a mitochondrial DNA marker (partial sequence of the NADH dehydrogenase 6 gene). The haplotype network showed shallow genetic divergence within the species, suggesting a bottleneck followed by population expansion. One major haplotype that occurred in 70.5% of all individuals examined was the most frequent in every population sampled. A second major haplotype was abundant around Kyushu but not found in Hokkaido. This skewed haplotype distribution resulted in significant genetic differentiation along the north-south axis of Japan. The importance of the southern clade, which included the second major haplotype, was supported by population genetic analyses of datasets that excluded either the southern clade or the northern clades. The north-south differentiation remained when datasets that excluded the northern clades were used, but disappeared when datasets that excluded the southern clade were used. The combined evidence of shallow divergence and the north-south population structure suggests that the L. brevicula population around Japan once declined and then expanded and colonized northward. Although the time of population reduction and recolonization could not be precisely estimated, the observation that this species is absent further north in Japan suggests that it would have been unable to survive in northern Japan during the last glacial maximum (LGM) and therefore recolonization likely occurred after the LGM, probably from south to north
Lessons of Fantasy: The Hero\u27s Journey in Ogiwara Noriko\u27s Fūjin Hishō (The Secret Texts of the Wind Spirit)
An analysis of the Japanese fantasy novel, Fūjin Hishō, or The Secret Texts of the Wind Spirit (my translation), published 2005, by popular author Ogiwara Noriko. The paper follows the hero, Sōjūrō, on his journey through the novel, examining the significance of the choices he must make and the lessons he learns about himself and his power. This examination also explores the role of fantasy in Sōjūrō\u27s story, and by extension the role fantasy plays as a genre and the significance it holds for its readers. It includes several excerpts from the novel that I have translated into English from the original Japanese, illustrating some of the scenes discussed in the paper
Comprehensible output in NNS-NNS interaction in Japanese as a foreign language
Deposited with permission of the author. © 1993 Noriko IwashitaThis study is a partial replication of Pica et al’s study (1989) of comprehensible output, and investigates comprehensible output in NNS-NNS interaction in Japanese as a Foreign Language. Data were collected using two different types of tasks (information gap and jigsaw tasks) in three sub-groups of different proficiency levels (High-High, Low-Low, and High-Low) in order to find out (1) to what extent the tasks provide opportunities for learners to modify their initial output in response to requests for clarification and confirmation, and (2) the extent to which learners actually modify their output in response to interlocutor requests.
The results show that comprehensible output is an important phenomenon in NNS-NNS interaction. Unlike the result of Pica et al, task types had more effect on opportunities for comprehensible output and actual production of comprehensible output than request types. Not much difference was found among different proficiency groups
Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analysis revealed a cryptic species and genetic introgression in Littorina sitkana (Mollusca, Gastropoda)
We investigated mitochondrial and nuclear DNA genotypes in nominal Littorina sitkana samples from 2 localities in Eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan. Our results indicated the existence of cryptic species. In the analysis of partial mitochondrial Cytchrome b gene sequences, haplotypes of L. sitkana samples were monophyletic in a phylogenetic tree with orthologous sequences from other Littorina species, but were apparently separated in 2 clades. One included typical L. sitkana (CBa clade) samples, which formed a clade with an allopatric species, L. horikawai. The other, CBb, was independent from CBa and L. horikawai. Haplotypes of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene also separated into 2 clades. We additionally examined intron sequence of the heat shock cognate 70 (HSC70) nuclear gene and identified 17 haplotypes. These were also separated into 2 clades, HSCa and HSCb. Among the examined Hokkaido samples, 60% of individuals were heterozygotes. However, each heterozygote consisted of haplotypes from the same clade, HSCa or HSCb, and no admixture of HSCa and HSCb haplotypes was observed. These results indicate reproductive isolation between the 2 clades. Among the genotyped Hokkaido samples, 93% of individuals had CBa + HSCa or CBb + HSCb genotypes, and 7% had CBb + HSCa genotypes. The discrepancy between the mtDNA and nuclear DNA haplotypes in a few individuals may have been caused by genetic introgression due to past hybridization
