Rational Ignorance in Education: A Field Experiment in Student Plagiarism

    No full text
Despite the concern that student plagiarism has become increasingly common, there is relatively little objective data on the prevalence or determinants of this illicit behavior. This study presents the results of a natural field experiment designed to address these questions. Over 1,200 papers were collected from the students in undergraduate courses at a selective post-secondary institution. Students in half of the participating courses were randomly assigned to a requirement that they complete an anti-plagiarism tutorial before submitting their papers. We found that assignment to the treatment group substantially reduced the likelihood of plagiarism, particularly among student with lower SAT scores who had the highest rates of plagiarism. A follow-up survey of participating students suggests that the intervention reduced plagiarism by increasing student knowledge rather than by increasing the perceived probabilities of detection and punishment. These results are consistent with a model of student behavior in which the decision to plagiarize reflects both a poor understanding of academic integrity and the perception that the probabilities of detection and severe punishment are low.

The paper presents various forms of cooperation and professional work of Danica Pinterović related to Osijek artist and restorer Josip Leović. This cooperation existed primarily in the period of Leović’s work at the Museum of Slavonia from 1947 to 1963 and included the museum and professional-publicist work of Danica Pinterović. Even though we have to take into account Danica Pinterović’s published texts about Josip Leović, the primary interest of this study are the unpublished and the unknown records by Danica Pinterović, those from her work diaries, which are today seen as archival material and have its signifi cance. The Work Diary, kept by Danica Pinterović who took note of everyday work and work tasks of all Museum employees, is in a sense also a diary of Josip Leović’s work. Thus, it is an important resource for Leović’s work biography, but also for the history of restoration works performed by Josip Leović on certain artwork displayed in the Museum of Slavonia and Museum of Fine Arts. Using the information from the Work Diaries by Danica Pinterović, the author chronologically lists and cites the records of Leović’s museum activities, as recorded by the diary writer. The first significant expert contributions about the life and work of Josip Leović, important to become familiarized with artist’s biography and his opus, were presented by Danica Pinterović. She was the one who actually introduces Josip Leović in professional literature and thus established later historical and artistic considerations of Leović’s opus. She wrote and published several professional articles on Leović’s artistic and restorative work, including a summarized biography. She also wrote about one of Leović’s biggest exhibitions for daily newspaper and, in the end, wrote an expert review of Leović’s opus on the occasion of his death

It is impossible in limited number of pages to give a fair picture of such a remarkable man, great mathematician and human being as Josip Pecaric. Our intention is instead to complement the picture of him in various ways. We hope that our paper will give also someflavor of Josip as family man, fighter, supervisor, international authority, author (also in other subjects than mathematics), fan of the Croatian football team, and not only as his obvious role as our King of Inequalities.</p

In this article, the author compares the work of two individuals who left a great impression on the organization of the Croatian workers' movement and unions from 1918 to the 1980s. Josip Cazi had a communist orientation; Josip Beker was a Social Democrat. Cazi promoted revolution, Beker social reform. From the beginning, both were quite active in Slavonia. During the Second World War, Cazi was a member of the Partisan movement, while Beker, because of his anti-fascist beliefs, spent the whole war in prison. After 1945, Cazi made an impressive career for himself, whereas Beker lived on the margins of social developments
