Renowned for the potential in alleviating poverty, co-operative movement has been encouraged and supported by the government. This research investigates co-operative performances and efficiency in Malaysia using quantitative and qualitative methods. The first essay revealed that co-operatives’ role in economic development is still relevant. Credit and banking co-operatives had contributed to the movement’s growth and development. The National Co-operative Plans are important blueprint for co-operative development in the country. Investigation on factors influencing co-operative membership in the second essay revealed that membership is favourable to the older age groups as compared to younger age groups. Those working in government sector are more likely to be members. The duration of membership and frequency in annual general meeting attendance are found to be positively related to co-operative shareholding. An analysis on satisfaction and perception of co-operative performance showed that patrons are satisfied with the quality and reliability of goods and services. There are positive perceptions on the benefits of co-operation and on the role of co-operative in economic development and community wellbeing. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) of co-operative membership target groups in the third essay showed the co-operative groups’ efficiency score of 0.605 or equivalent to 65.3 percent inefficiency level in producing outputs. Co-operatives have operational “slacks” and inefficient resource usage. Tobit regression showed that turnover, equity and members are significant in influencing efficiency scores of co-operatives. Comparison of efficiency and productivity level of Bank Rakyat with conventional banks showed that Bank Rakyat was among the top five banks. Further analysis by including 5 other Islamic banks brought it to top six positions. The source of total factor productivity progress was technological progress while technical efficiency change remained stagnant. Tobit regression analysis revealed that loan intensity and assets were significant in determining the efficiency scores. Environmental factors are significant in influencing technological and scale efficiencies. Bank’s status (co-operative or Islamic) is significant in influencing technical and pure technical efficiency of banks. Action research in the last essay reviewed that co-operative establishment requires local communities involvement in decision-making process, human capabilities enhancement programmes, empowerment, entrepreneurial spirits, leadership qualities and local community commitments. Of the three community co-operatives in Marine Park Islands, Tioman achieved highest while Redang experienced moderate progress. Tinggi co-operative failed because lack of leadership, commitment and entrepreneurial spirits. Although co-operatives in Tioman and Redang have the potential to be the vehicle in alternative livelihoods strategy and social cohesion objectives, the co-operatives are faced with ample challenges. This research contributes towards an economic approach in performance evaluation of co-operatives in Malaysia. The high percentage of inefficient co-operatives revealed had provided empirical evidence that achievement of the Second National Co-operative Plan goals by 2015 will be affected. Results and recommendations from study are important for improvement of current co-operative management, policies, laws and regulations in Malaysia

The challenges faced by SME to get access to formal lending are well-known. Lending to SME continue, but mostly it was backed up by collateral. However, providing collateral to secure financing is a mammoth task for SME. Establishment of credit guarantee company to woo commercial lenders to lend to SME is a strong signal that collateral remains strong in dictating the credit flow to the SME. Past studies have been too concentrating on collateral lending until the area of financing without collateral to SME has been neglected. Hence, it is vital to scrutiny the factor’s considered by the commercial lenders to grant credit to SME without collateral, as collateral is the main reason SMEs are being denied on the formal lending. Therefore, this conceptual paper was formed to discuss the factors that might influence lending to SME without collateral by examining diverse literature and past studies related to financing to SME

The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of Bolton's ratios in orthodontic population of Malaysian main ethnics; Malay, Chinese and Indians. Ninety convenient samples consisting of 30 pre-orthodontic study casts from each ethnic that fits the inclusion criteria were selected. The greatest mesiodistal widths of each tooth from six to six for overall ratio and three to three for anterior ratio were measured using a digital callipers linked to Hamilton Arch Tooth System software to the nearest 0.01mm. Means of the ratios were calculated using Bolton analysis. One sample t-test statistic analysis was carried out to compare the means with Bolton values of anterior ratio and overall ratio and one-way ANOVA was used to analyze comparison between ethnic groups of the anterior ratio and the overall ratio with the level of statistical significance set at p < 0.05. However, there were no significant differences when comparing Bolton values with Chinese and Indian anterior and overall ratios. The Bolton standards could be applied to Malaysian Chinese, Indians and Malay's female. Subsequently, a specific standard should be used for the Malays orthodontic population.Article URL : http://www.ukm.my/jsm/pdf_files/SM-PDF-41-2-2012/17%20Aida%20Nur%20Ashikin.pd

This research seeks to study the employment of fantasy and historical references in the structure of the narrative in the novel by the Qatari writer Noura Faraj "Rose Water" from many aspects: the narrative discourse, the employment of fantasy and historical reference, the nature of imaginary vision, and the approach to historical and imaginary characters. The research was built on an attempt to reveal the artistic value and the intellectual vision, which the novel represented in many respects of recalling the historical references that related to the 4th-century Hijri (AH). This is in the light of the interpretive approach. The research showed that this novel reflects a problem in its relationship to historical references and fantasy, and is characterized by its condemnation of some historical events, the reversal of the truth, and the illusion of others. This is mainly because it was able to generate a sense of the historical event beyond the ability of the narrative discourse to give the text its literary value. The research also demonstrates that the idea of the novel and the vision of its author is to raise the level of the presence of the imagined character against the historical character, and the victory of the imaginary over the historical. Due to the paucity of researches dealing with the use of fantasy in the narrative, we hope that this type of research will find greater interest in the future as it is an important experimental technique in the creator's reading of reality
