Seditious Spaces: Protest in Post-Colonial Malaysia

    Get PDF
The title ‘Seditious Spaces’ is derived from one aspect of Britain’s colonial legacy in Malaysia (formerly Malaya): the Sedition Act 1948. While colonial rule may seem like it was a long time ago, Malaysia has only been independent for sixty-one years, after 446 years of colonial rule. The things that we take for granted today, such as democracy and all the rights it implies, are some of the more ironic legacies of colonialism that some societies, such as Malaysia, have had to figure out after centuries of subjugation. While not suggesting that post-colonial regimes should not be held accountable for their actions, it is ironic to see a BBC commentator grilling the leader of a Commonwealth state about repressive laws and regulations inherited from the colonial era. (Even the term ‘Commonwealth’ is itself ironic, implying shared wealth, in reality it commonly meant a colonised country was contributing to the wealth of the metropolitan centre)...A+BE | Architecture and the Built Environment No 26 (2018)Spatial Planning and Strateg

Are Library and Information Science Journals Becoming More Internationalized? A Longitudinal Study of Authors' Geographical Affiliations in 20 LIS Journals from 1981 to 2003

    Get PDF
This paper examines journal publications in the field of library and information science (LIS) to assess the level of internationalization in their publications authorship pattern. The international production and communication of scholarly knowledge is crucial to the growth of a discipline. Recent advancement in communication technology and the rise of globalization have led to the hope of a more balanced flow of scientific knowledge. Nevertheless, scholars also cautioned the possibility of a global digital divide and a widening knowledge gap. This study analyzed the geographical affiliations of authors in 20 international LIS journals to track the longitudinal changes in LIS authorship pattern. Findings suggest an increase in the internationalization of LIS authorships over the years. However, the LIS authorship distribution was still highly uneven in 2003 (Gini coefficient = 0.95). Economic power is still found to be a moderate predictor of publication performance. The findings of this study suggest that, at the moment of the writing, there is still room for the LIS field to be more internationalized. Further research is needed to identify the barriers in international scholarly communication and to explore the implications of such a communication pattern on scientific development and global equality

Adolescent food parenting questionnaire : evaluation of Turkish psychometric properties of parent and adolescent versions

Purpose: This study aimed to adapt the Adolescent Food Parenting Questionnaire: Parent and Adolescent Version into Turkish and conduct validity and reliability studies. Material and Methods: The research was carried out in methodological type and was carried out with 337 adolescents aged 12-16 years and their parents between June to September 2022. Data were collected with the Child and Parent Information Form and Adolescent Food Parent Questionnaire. Content validity, construct validity, internal consistency reliability, and item analysis were used to determine the questionnaire's psychometric properties. Results: Both parent and adolescent versions of the Adolescent Food Parenting Questionnaire contain 16 items. The results of the exploratory factor analysis determined that the five-factor structure explained 50.45% of the total Variance for the parent version and 63.31% of the total Variance for the adolescent version. In addition, item factor loads for the parent version ranged from 0.32 to 0.71, while item factor loads for the adolescent version ranged from 0.37 to 0.75. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the goodness of fit values of the parent version were chi 2/sd=2.030, RMSEA=0.055, GFI=0.94, CFI=0.95, IFI=0.95, RFI=0.87, NFI=0.90, TLI =0.93, and the adolescent version were chi 2/sd=1.672, RMSEA = 0.045, GFI = 0.95, CFI = 0.96, IFI = 0.96, RFI = 0.88, NFI = 0.91, and TLI = 0.95. The Cronbach alpha value for the entire parent version was 0.86, and the Cronbach alpha values for all sub- dimensions were determined to vary between 0.60 and 0.84. The adolescent version's overall cronbach alpha was determined to be 0.88, and the adolescent version's sub-dimension Cronbach alpha values were discovered to vary between 0.63 and 0.841. Conclusion: As a result of the research, it was determined that the Adolescent Food Parenting Questionnaire: Parent and Adolescent Version is a valid and reliable measurement tool to be used specifically for Turkish society.Hakkari University Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee [2022/58-1]Acknowledgement: We did not receive any source of financial grants or other funding. Schema Theory-based Computational Approach to Support Children's Conceptual Understanding

    Get PDF
Researchers acknowledge the difficulty faced by children in understanding new concepts. Explaining new concepts to children requires supporting their reasoning based on concrete objects and ideas. Human tutors normally use some dialogue to introduce new concepts and tailor the explanations to the prior knowledge of the children. There is a lack of interactive pedagogical agents that guide children's reasoning and adapt explanation to their cognitive state. The design of such agents can be based on learning theories that explain how children understand new concepts, as well as on studies of how human teachers support children's conceptual understanding. The goal of this research is to develop a computational framework to inform the design of a pedagogical agent capable of engaging in a dialogue that supports children's conceptual understanding, the thesis proposes an approach for Schema Activation and Interpersonal Communications (SAIC) to support cognitive tasks that occur when a child is learning new concepts through one-to-one interaction with a computer agent. The approach is based on schema theory that explains how meaning-making occurs and stresses the importance of prior knowledge, and on the results of an experimental study that identifies strategies human teachers use to support schema-based cognitive tasks. A novel architecture of a pedagogical agent whose behaviour is based on schema activation and modification is described. The architecture addresses three important issues: describing the process of activation and modification of relevant prior knowledge to be used in introducing new concepts; defining the reasoning and decision making of the agent to promote schema-based cognitive tasks; and providing adaptive explanations tailored to the child's relevant prior knowledge. The schematic knowledge of the SAIC agent is represented as frames, the dialogue is planned as a sequence of dialogue games, and the interaction language is implemented with linguistic templates extracted from a study with teachers. The applicability of the SAIC approach is demonstrated in a multimedia educational system 'Going to the Moon', as an integrated as an integrated component in a reading session. An experimental study with the multimedia system has validated the SAIC design approach and has examined the usefulness of the agent in supporting children's conceptual understanding in terms of improving their schematic knowledge. The thesis makes original contributions to the fields of Artificial Intelligence in Education by defining reasoning and decision making based on the principles of schema theory, and by designing a schema-based pedagogical agent to support children's conceptual understanding; Education by demonstrating the application of learning theories to inform the design of intelligent tutoring systems; and Knowledge-based systems by demonstrating the feasibility of frames as the representation formalism in Intelligent Tutoring Systems, and by proposing some original mechanism for using frames to design pedagogical agents
