Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Psoriasis Treatment Modalities in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Background: There is limited evidence detailing the cost-effectiveness of psoriasis treatments in the Asian region. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of 3 psoriasis treatments tailored for moderate to severe psoriasis, namely topical and phototherapy (TP), topical and systemic (TS), and topical and biologic (TB) regimens, respectively. Methods: This has been achieved by the participation of a prospective cohort involving a total of 90 moderate to severe psoriasis patients, which has been conducted at 5 public hospitals in Malaysia. The main outcome measures have been evaluated via cost and effectiveness psoriasis area severity index (PASI)-75 and/or body surface area (BSA) <5 and/or dermatology life quality index (DLQI) ≤5), estimated from the societal perspective over a 6-months duration. All costs are based on 2015’s recorded Malaysian Ringgit (RM) currency. Results: Consequently, TS has been found to be the most cost-effective treatment with the lowest cost/PASI-75/and/or BSA <5 and/or DLQI ≤5, valued at RM9034.56 (US2582.55).ThisisfollowedbyTP,whichisvaluedatRM28080.71(US2582.55). This is followed by TP, which is valued at RM28 080.71 (US8026.93) and TB, valued at RM54 287.02 (US$15 518.06). Furthermore, one-way sensitivity analysis has highlighted the cost of medication as the most sensitive parameter. Conclusion: Thus, the input from this study is helpful for policy-makers in determining the first line treatment for moderate to severe psoriasis with consideration of the costs and its effectiveness in Malaysia. This will consequently allow hospitals to justify and provide the essential resources for further research and development, as well as the adoption of better treatment options

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Influencing factors in dietary supplement consumption among university students / Nor Intan Shamimi Abdul Aziz

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in consuming dietary supplements which believed to promote a healthy lifestyle among generations. However, lack of knowledge and peer pressure can be the problems despite its long success. Thus, the aim of this study is twofold; i) to assess the sociodemographic information among the students on taking dietary supplements and ii) to examine the influencing factors that lead to dietary supplements consumption among undergraduate students in Selangor, Malaysia. Findings explained through equal distribution of survey between faculties, a majority of female students (72.5%) participated in this study compared to male students (27.5%) with both genders are in a good health condition (60.6%) and having normal BMI reading (65.3%). All the factors such as the perception of knowledge (r = 0.387), lifestyle behaviour (r = 0.541) and efficacy of the supplements (r = 0.548) indicate a moderate positive relationship towards dietary consumption in their daily life, respectively. More health educational talks need to be conducted in future to increase knowledge among university students. Future recommendations are drawn through the suggestion of reassessing other factors that lead to the DS consumption through qualitative method analysis

Knowledge and attitudes of academicians towards organ donation: a concept paper / Liatul Izian Ali Husin …[et al.]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the contributing factors towards the intention to become an organ donor. The literature review is on the main issue about the awareness of public about organ donation. In Malaysia only 420,601 pledgers of organ donation which is equivalent to 1.3 percent of the total population of Malaysia. This figure is not sufficient to meet the demand from patients in the organ waiting list. Literature reported that the level of awareness in Malaysia is still low. Low organ donation rates have been linked to a lack of public awareness and knowledge about organ donation. In order to get a better insight of what factors that may contribute to the intention of a person to become an organ donor, this paper, based on the past literature propose two factors: Knowledge and attitude as the predictor variables towards intention. The study intends to collect data from the academician in the Universiti Teknologi MARA, Selangor. The outcome of this research can offer a better understanding towards the intention to become an organ donor. It also provide a better insight to the public health agency to disseminate information to increase the awareness and knowledge about organ donation

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
