Longitudinal dynamics of high gain free electron laser amplifiers

    No full text
We consider the dynamics of a coherent seed undergoing a free electron laser high gain amplification. We discuss the dispersion of the optical packet during the interaction and study the problem using different formalisms, including that of the Wigner distribution. The analysis we develop is mainly based on a 1D procedure; the inclusion of transverse longitudinal interplay is also briefly discussed. Abstract: In 1987, when the João Cabral de Melo Neto’s collection of poems was published under the title of Crime in Calle Relator (1987), “A sevilhana que não se sabia” was the second in the order of exhibition, shortly after the poem of the same name to the book. That poem was reproduced as the first of the author’s next collection, titled Sevilha andando (1989), while it ceased to appear in the reissues of the book in which it was initially listed. Thus, the poem that was from one book began to compose another, exclusively, at the initiative of the author himself, for whom it mattered the constitution of the aesthetic artifact that the book comes to be. This differential trait in the author’s trajectory focuses retrospectively on all his work, from this remarkable event that interferes with the understanding of what constitutes a book, be it its publication or the meeting of poems that demands an appreciation particularized, on a case-by-case basis, of the poems intertwined with each other. Following the repercussion of the poem in the context of the poetic work, it will be made a comparison between the available editions of the volumes involved, to reach a more palpable understanding of the poem, perspectived throughout that poetic production. Keywords: modern Brazilian poetry; João Cabral de Melo Neto; style; publishing

Orientador : Iara Bemquerer CostaDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do Paraná. Abstract: In this dissertation, it is investigated the chronicles that composed the literary and journalistic work O presidente que sabia javanês written by Carlos Heitor Cony. These chronicles were published on Folha de São Paulo newspaper from 1994 to 2000. Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the President of Brazil, is the main object focused in the chronicles. The investigation is based upon Mikhail Bakhtin's theoretical background and French Discourse Analyses, mainly, the concepts of heterogeneity, intertextuality, dialogism, meaning achieved by social struggle among discourses and language as dialogue and interaction and the discourse as rooted in social experience. Guided by these concepts the analyses aimed: i) establish the multiplicity of social utterances that constitute each chronicle, aiming to search the possible meanings through that multiplicity; ii) search how the multiple social utterances are located and assimilated in the chronicles; iii) investigate how the other's utterance (Fernando Henrique Cardoso's speech) is articulated by the author; iv) how the author creates, through discourse, a social image of his main object. Fernando Henrique Cardoso, his presidential term and the "extraverbal context" of Brazilian Politics during that period (1994-2000) constitute Carlos Heitor Cony's object of depreciation. They are delivered through a great variety of social discourses, aiming to depreciate and devaluate them. The authors language does not reflect a pre-existing reality but generates his object through a carnivalesque point of view, using parody, irony and humour. On one hand there is what is said, creating a social image of Fernando Henrique Cardoso as a bad, hypocrite, corrupt president and, on the other hand, there is another object of the discourse that constitutes the unsaid discourse, creating a self-image of the author as a good, honest and respected person. Thus, the chronicles of the book O homem que sabia javanês are dialogic because they present inside the same utterances two objects that fight through the multiple social discourses to be established. One object is absolutely disqualified and the other one is exalted

Sexual Orientation and Earnings in Young Adulthood: New Evidence from Add Health

    No full text
Using data from a rich new data source, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the author examines the sensitivity of the estimated earnings penalty faced by sexual minorities to 1) the use of multiple measures of sexual orientation, including both identity/attraction and behaviorally based definitions, and 2) controls for family and individual heterogeneity. Baseline regression results show that gay males and bisexuals earn less than their heterosexual counterparts, a result that persists after controlling for family-level observables. However, after controlling for personality and isolating self-identified sexual minorities who are most likely to be observed as such by employers, the estimated wage penalty for bisexuals falls sharply in absolute magnitude while the wage penalty for gay males persists. Preferred specifications show that relative to heterosexual males, gay males earn wages that are 13.1% lower, a result that is consistent with labor market discrimination. Neither lesbians nor bisexual females earn significantly less than their heterosexual counterparts

Given the immense environmental costs of phytosanitary practices in tropical regions, in this dissertation, the author presents, with a pedagogical and dialectical integration approach, from multiple scientific and technical perspectives, the importance of refocusing basic aspects of the management of phytosanitary Tropical agroecosystems, which are immersed in megadiverse forest ecosystems. The sequence covered includes, in the first part, aspects such as agriculture and simplification of forest systems, basic aspects of the natural condition of the Neotropic, consequences of the ecological simplification of forest ecosystems as a result of agriculture, the added value of singular agrobiodiversity derived from jungle ecosystems and their implications on plant health, the advantages of jungle exuberance: phytochemistry, allelochemicals, industrial precursors, pesticides, gene banks and germplasm, with such aspects as the agri-environmental benefits of this resource, something Which is widely explained in the second part when weeds are dealt with, which are assumed with a criterion of natural resource of great ecological possibilities, a dissertation that exposes many aspects of the wrong of despising the spontaneous vegetation, ending in a epilogue re-examines the mismanagement approach given to jungle ecosystems and the agro-ecosystems derived from them, given the artificial, eurocentric and ecologically erroneous external view of this natural condition and the consequences of introducing technologies originating in temperate regions that are implement and market in mega-diverse tropical ecosystems, with negative consequences for the ecosphere and human survival.
