    From the river to the sea? : honour, identity and politics in historical and contemporary Palestinian rejectionism

    The present thesis seeks to understand and explain the rhetoric and behaviour of the rejectionist 'current' within the Palestinian national movement. It proceeds from the view that extant scholarship, primarily from within the fields of terrorism and security studies, has profoundly misunderstood rejectionist speech and behaviour by ignoring the explanatory capacity of Emic - the research subject's perception - as well as the influence of the sociocultural milieu within which rejectionism exists. The thesis proceeds to set up a 'socioculturally sensitive' analytical framework drawn from social identity theory, a heuristic, non-reductionist model for understanding group interaction and conflict. Emphasizing cultural norms and cues identified by anthropologists as salient in the eastern Mediterranean, the thesis suggests that the social value of honour, patron-client dynamics and a firmly entrenched group orientation must be significant elements of a model for understanding rejectionist behaviour. The main analytical narrative suggests that for reasons derived from ideology, patron-client relations and group dynamics, what has distinguished the rejectionists from the mainstream have been a qualitatively different set of preconditions for, and objectives of diplomatic negotiations. To the main rejectionist factions the goal of liberating Palestine has always been inextricably intertwined with the goal of restoring national honour; one without the other has been impossible and to claim otherwise would mean a depletion of factional and personal honour. To the rejectionists, there has never been any question of deviating from the fundamental goals - national recognition, repatriation, self-determination and independent statehood, not even for tactical reasons. This 'higher standard' likely derives from their structurally and politically subordinate position within the national movement, and the need to creatively enhance their own social status and appeal

    Leaders of European union and G8 have set the target of 80% reduction in greenhouse gases emissions by 2050 by decarbonizing the power and transport sector. There are several pathways to achieve this, some of them being a) use of renewable power and biomass b) improvement in transport and building energy efficiency and c) replacement of fossil based fuel with sustainable fuel. This thesis is focussed on some of the measures which can be taken by Air Transportation Industry to reduce GHG emissions and carbon footprint. Although, there are many ways in which air transport industry can achieve this goal, this work mainly discusses a) increase in power generation efficiency of aircraft systems b) use of sustainable fuels for aircrafts and c) some ways for sustainable fuel production for aircrafts in an efficient and economic way. However, it is only starting point for discussion and can be further extended to include more efficient and cheaper technologies with reduced carbon foot-print. In this study, use of bi-directional Solid-Oxide Cells (SOC) as auxiliary power unit (APU) on-board commercial aircraft is explored. These bi-directional SOC APU units can be used in the airport energy network either to produce cleaner energy or to produce sustainable fuels depending on the energy demand. This work focusses on use of these bi-directional SOCs as fuel cells during flight operations and as electrolysers to produce sustainable fuel at the airport when the aircrafts are parked. Hence, complete fuel production plant is designed to be situated at the airport. The scope of this thesis is limited to production of fuel for aircraft APU use only. Further extension of this project can include use of these bi-directional SOCs for providing electricity to the airport and fuel for other purposes. For analysis, medium range aircrafts like A320 and B737 are considered. This system is designed and dimensioned for producing 500KW of electric power on-board aircarft. Jet fuel and ammonia are considered as fuel options for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell-Gas Turbine (SOFC-GT) based APU. Small scale airports like Eindhoven are studied to understand the flight frequency and parking duration for the aircrafts. These bi-directional SOCs are operational as Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) only when the aircraft is parked. Co-electrolysis is performed to produce syngas and steam electrolysis is done to produce hydrogen at the airport. Jet fuel is synthesized from syngas through Fischer Tropsch process and ammonia is synthesized from H2 and N2 through Haber Bosch process. Fuel synthesis plants are also designed as part of stationary fuel production plant at the airport. The fact that electrolyzer operates on excess available renewable electricity only, needs a special mention here. Intermittent nature of excess renewable electricity requires implementation of another source of sustainable syngas for fuel production so that sufficient capacity to supply all demand is ensured and robustness against delivery risks is achieved. Biomass gasification is one other method for generating fossil-free fuel. It uses biomass (birch wood) to produce syngas for sustainable fuel production at the aiport alongwith electrolysers. This leads to three cases of fuel production: - Case-1: Gasifier+fuel synthesis - Case-2: SOEC+fuel synthesis - Case-3: Gasifier+SOEC+Fuel synthesis ASPEN PLUS is used for modelling SOFC and stationary fuel production plant models with both jet fuel and ammonia. Modelling procedure for all the models is explained in detail with input parameters and process conditions. Thermodynamic analysis is carried out to compare the exergy efficiency of jet fuel and ammonia based SOFC-GT systems. It is observed that both jet fuel and ammonia based SOFC-GT systems give 62% and 58% exergy efficiency respectively which is higher than the conventional APU systems. Similarly, section by section exergy analysis is carried out for jet fuel and ammonia production plants to understand the exergy destructing processes. Comparison is made between exergy efficiency of jet fuel and ammonia production plants at the airport to understand thermodynamic behavior of both. Jet fuel synthesis produces significant amount of hydrogen and gasoline alongwith jet fuel as product. Therefore, two scenarios are analysed for exergy comparisons. a) Ammonia and jet fuel considered as product: Ammonia shows higher exergy efficiency than jet fuel production for all three cases enumerated above. b) Ammonia and (jet fuel, gasoline, hydrogen) are considered as useful products: For case-1 and case-3, jet fuel plant is exergetically more favorable than ammonia plant. His Shah jo Risalo has been translated into many languages from Sindhi and a large number of scholars, both Pakistani and foreign, have tried to understand and explain the philosophy and the message in Shah Latif`s poetry. The author has explained in this paper that the worldly love had led Shah Latif to eternal and real love, that is the love of God, and his worldly love is but a metaphor for the eternal and true love of Allah, a relationship between the soul of an individual and the Soul of the Cosmos. But the author laments that tyranny of the feudal system still exists in Sindh and Shah Latif`s call to gallows remains silent

    Cellular Communications Using Aerial Platforms

    This paper is devoted to the study of cellular communications using aerial platforms (APs). A set of key equations is derived that quantify the coverage area on the ground as a function of AP elevation, the operation of the adaptive multibeam antenna on the AP, and the formulation of contiguous terrestrial cells and their shapes. Specifically, we consider the deployment of an AP to provide terrestrial mobile radio communications using the universal mobile telecommunication system operating in its wide-band code-division multiple-access mode. Calculations are made of the number of users versus Eb/No for different service rates. Multi-tiered cellular structures having cells of different size that are steerable with the offered teletraffic are examined. The array structure to achieve this is identified. The preliminary results shows that an AP at a height of 21 km covers an area of radius 517 km. Up to 21 users per cell with a service rate of 8 kb/s can be accommodated in the 2.2-GHz band. These services can be provided within an area of radius 70 km with transmitted powers of less than 1 W. High system capacity is proved to be possible by constructing cells of radius as small as 100 m using square planar arrays with dimensions of less than 12 m x 12 m. The AP system provides high capacity and Doppler frequency shifts that only originate from roving mobiles

    Islamic insurance Takaful and its applications in Saudi Arabia

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityTakaful is an Arabic term meaning solidarity, which is used to describe a system of Islamic insurance that functions as an alternative to conventional insurance. Takaful, as a form of insurance, is entering a fast growing global market, promoted by the growth of the Asian economies and economic prosperity in the Middle East. The Takaful system is based on the principle of cooperation or mutual assistance, and is Tabarru (Voluntary), meaning that the attendant risks are spread collectively across the group of volunteers. The Takaful system is best understood as a pact (or policy) ascribed to by a group of participants who choose to jointly guarantee themselves against loss or damage suffered by individual signatories, as confirmed in the policy. The prediction is that Takaful will be the default choice for citizens in Islamic countries in the near future. The combination of the system’s financial efficacy, combined with principles underwritten by religious correctness has accentuated the attractiveness of this, and similar, Islamic banking and financial products to Muslims. By examining the Saudi insurance sector, which is a market leader in the region, this thesis delivers a brief history of insurance in general and of the Saudi insurance legal framework in particular, and by so doing sheds light on Islamic insurance Takaful applications worldwide. It also engages in an evaluation of insurance products available in Saudi Arabia to determine whether the facilities offered by the insurance companies operating in the country incorporate obstacles and obstructions, which may impact on the effectiveness of governmental regulations and supervision in relation to setting a legislative framework. This influences the extent to which the foundations for the insurance market are secured in Saudi Arabia. The aim of the present study also leads to some suggestions and recommendations for future practice

    Technical performance and diagnostic utility of the new Elecsys (R) neuron-specific enolase enzyme immunoassay

    This international multicenter study was designed to evaluate the technical performance of the new double-monoclonal, single-step Elecsys neuron-specific enolase (NSE) enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and to assess its utility as a sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis of small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Intra and interassay coefficients of variation, determined in five control or serum specimens in six laboratories, ranged from 0.7 to 5.3 (interlaboratory median: 1.3%) and from 1.3 to 8.5 (interlaboratory median: 3.4%), respectively. Laboratory-to-laboratory comparability was excellent with respect to recovery and interassay coefficients of variation. The test was linear between 0.0 and 320 ng/ml (highest measured concentration). There was a significant correlation between NSE concentrations measured using the Elecsys NSE and the established Cobas Core NSE EIA II in all subjects (n=723) and in patients with lung cancer (n=333). However, NSE concentrations were systematically lower (approximately 9%) with the Elecsys NSE than with the comparison test. Based on a specificity of 95% in comparison with the group suffering from benign lung diseases (n=183), the cutoff value for the discrimination between malignant and benign conditions was set at 21.6 ng/ml. NSE was raised in 73.4% of SCLC patients (n=188) and was significantly higher (p<0.01) in extensive (87.8%) as opposed to limited disease (56.7%). NSE was also elevated in 16.0% of the cases with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC, n=374). It is concluded that the Elecsys NSE EIA is a reliable and accurate diagnostic procedure for the measurement of NSE in serum samples.
