    Performance of Active Multicast Congestion Control

    This paper aims to provide insight into the behavior of congestion control mechanisms for reliable multicast protocols. A multicast congestion control based on active networks has been proposed and simulated using ns-2 over a network topology obtained using the Tiers tool. The congestion control mechanism has been simulated under different network conditions and with different settings of its configuration parameters. The objective is to analyze its performance and the impact of the different configuration parameters on its behavior. The simulation results show that the performance of the protocol is good in terms of delay and bandwidth utilization. The compatibility of the protocol with TCP flows has not been demonstrated, but the simulations performed show that by altering the parameter settings, the proportion of total bandwidth taken up by the two types of flow, multicast and TCP, may be modified

    Per-Frame energy consumption in 802.11 devices and its implication on modeling and design

    This paper provides an in-depth understanding of the per-frame energy consumption behavior in 802.11 wireless LAN devices. Extensive measurements are performed for seven devices of different types (wireless routers, smartphones, tablets, and embedded devices) and for both UDP and TCP traffic. Experimental results unveil that a substantial fraction of energy consumption, hereafter descriptively named cross-factor, may be ascribed to each individual frame while it crosses the protocol stack (OS, driver, NIC) and is independent of the frame size. Our findings, summarized in a convenient energy consumption model, contrast traditional models that (implicitly) amortize such energy cost component in a fixed baseline cost or in a toll proportional to the frame size and raise the alert that, in some cases, conclusions drawn using traditional energy models may be fallacious.This work was supported by the European Community under the CROWD Project (FP7-ICT-318115)Publicad

    BGP-like TE Capabilities for SHIM6

    In this paper we present a comprehensive set of mechanisms that restore to the site administrator the capacity of enforcing traffic engineering (TE) policies in a multiaddressed IPv6 scenario. The mechanisms rely on the ability of SHIM6 to securely perform locator changes in a transparent fashion to transport and application layers. Once an outgoing path has been selected for a communication by proper routing configuration in the site, the source prefix of SHIM6 data packets is rewritten by the site routers to avoid packet discarding due to ingress filtering. The SHIM6 locator preferences exchanged in the context establishment phase are modified by the site routers to influence in the path used for receiving traffic. Scalable deployment is ensured by the stateless nature of these mechanisms.Publicad

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Implementación de una arquitectura de VoD con multidescripción y señalización SIP para entornos de redes de siguiente generación

    Las NGN son redes multiservicio capaces de manejar voz, datos y vídeo. Al ser independiente la capa de servicio de la tecnología de transporte, las NGN aportan muchas ventajas a aplicaciones sensibles a retardos como pueden ser IPTV, VoD o VoIP. Este proyecto se centra en aplicaciones de VoD donde la transmisión es unicast, en tiempo real y donde es más difícil garantizar la calidad de servicio. ETSI-TISPAN ha seleccionado SIP para la señalización en las NGN, por lo que el establecimiento de la conexión entre el cliente y los servidores debe usar este protocolo. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo desarrollar una aplicación en Java para la provisión del servicio de VoD utilizando codificación con descripción múltiple (MDC). La arquitectura propuesta está formada por un cliente que solicita un fichero de vídeo con unas determinadas prestaciones, un servidor de vídeo que sirve dicho fichero y un servidor de control que gestiona las peticiones de los clientes, redirigiéndolos al servidor de vídeo que mejor les pueda atender. Del lado del cliente parten las peticiones de establecimiento, modificación y liberación de la sesión multimedia, que se basan en los protocolos SIP y SDP. La codificación de vídeo con descripción múltiple (MDC), codifica una señal en dos o más flujos llamados descriptores. Cada uno de los descriptores puede ser decodificado de forma independiente brindando una reproducción útil de la señal original. Cuantos más descriptores se reciban, mejor será la calidad de la señal recibida. Al finalizar este proyecto no existe un conjunto de códecs MDC, por lo que no ha sido posible integrarlos en nuestra aplicación de VoD. Sin embargo, se han realizado pruebas para validar la propuesta y conocer los parámetros que la condicionan: el tipo de conexión y el retardo de playout.Ingeniería de Telecomunicació
