A "Maverick Salafi Political Jihadist" in a Turbulent Period: A Biographical Study of Dr Fauzi
A biographical study through the lens of Mills' sociological imagination and Erikson's identity crisis provides a unique understanding of Dr Fauzi AR, a dedicated Islamist. Fauzi grew up in a devout Muslim family in Kauman, Yogyakarta, the heartland of the modernist Islamic organisation Muhammadiyah. He was educated in Muhammadiyah schools and eventually became a qualified medical doctor. He was politically active in the Islamic United Development Party and joined Laskar Jihad, a Salafi-Wahabi paramilitary group, during the inter-religious conflict in Maluku in 2000. This article argues that the political turbulence during the democratic transition in 1998-1999 led Fauzi to have an identity crisis, which spurred his desire to participate in jihad (holy war). Afterwards, Fauzi became a reformed "maverick post-jihadist," in that he was unpredictable yet competent. He was unorthodox in his methods, remaining active in mainstream political Islam through the United Development Party while also engaging in physical jihad, which is contradictory because participation in partisan politics is forbidden by the Salafi doctrine. He also remained a heavy smoker although smoking is forbidden by Salafi religious decree. He further defied Salafism by supporting his wife in an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the national parliament as a member of the secular-nationalist party Gerindra in the 2009 election. This case study of Fauzi AR reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of political Islam and Islamic movements in the post-Soeharto era, including those who resorted to extremism and violence to achieve greater Islamisation of society
Perempuan dan Peran Regenerasi dalam Lingkaran Ekstremisme Kekerasan: Narasi dari Indonesia Timur
This article argues the important roles played by women either in the act of violent extremism or in its countering by focusing particularly on the issue of regeneration. Through their traditional roles as a mother and wife, women can affect, manage, or even to a certain extent shape the choice of a family either to keep or to discharge violent extremism ideology in the family circle. The study was carried out in Poso, a small town in Central Sulawesi, Eastern Indonesia, which has experienced communal conflict between Muslim and Christian communities that eventually been transformed into violent extremism acts by jihadi-terrorist actors. Through conducting fieldwork in 2019 and continuing with an ‘in-distance study’ using communication technology in 2020, the study employed a qualitative method by interviewing 30 women in Poso. Following Vigh (2006) and Sjoberg & Gentry (2011), it contends that woman as agency carries out social navigation in dealing with uncertainties and socio-political crises as the consequence of protracted violent conflict in the area. This study concludes that despite being situated in the circles of jihadism which are more dominated by masculine character, women’s agency emerges in two forms: first, in nurturing and maintaining the ideology of violent extremism through inheriting revenge narratives, choosing a school, and involving children in extremism activities. Second, some women opt to leave violent circles off in their families by disclosing the spaces for dialogue and opening reflective personal communication with their children to provide broader viewpoints and non-violence values. The article closes with a reflection on the dynamic relations between mother and children as a pivotal factor in the regeneration process of violent extremist groups based on biographic narratives of mother and children in jihadi-terrorist family.
TRANSISI PEMUDA YOGYAKARTA MENUJU DUNIA KERJA: NARASI DAN PERSPEKTIF DARI SELATAN
This article presents four narratives of youth transition from school to work in Yogyakarta as representative of the narratives of global South. Previous studies of youth transition are dominated by theories from Metropole/Global North which treats the Periphery/Global South only as a source of data. Instead of contending that young people is free to make choice as argued by dominant youth transition theories from Metropole, this article argues young people in Yogyakarta have to negotiate with sociocultural and structural factors surround them. Following contextual approach by White and Wyn (1998), considering the importance of family and local culture (Nilan 2011) and taking into account unequal relation between Metropole and Periphery (Connell 2007), this article shows how young people in Yogyakarta are affected by both sociocultural and structural factors to take the fast track of transition by entering job market in their early years. This article concludes by suggesting the importance of emerging narratives of young people from Global South to create plurality of voices in knowledge production especially in developing youth studies.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
