Democratic Welfare State as Visualised by the Quaid-i-Azam

    Get PDF
The Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is known more for his political achievements than for his socio-economic thought. Last two decades, however, have seen a continuous flow of books containing his speeches, statements, messages, interviews, discussions in pre-independence legislative bodies and addresses in the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. Even a cursory look at this vast literature shows that he was not only concerned with the political aspect of sub-continent’s independence movement but also consistently expressed his views regarding the socio-economic uplift of masses in general and Muslim society in particular. These views in their bare essentials reflect a remarkable continuity of approach from the earlier days of his political career to the period he occupied the position of Governor General of Pakistan. Actually, he became more and more expressive and forthright as the prospects of Pakistan coming into existence became bright. When Pakistan finally appeared as a sovereign nation on the map of the world, he openly rejected the prevailing economic system as having failed to do justice between man and man and to eradicate friction from the international field.

The Azam Tani program is one of the Government Transformation Program (GTP) that is actively implemented in Kedah. Recently, there are various issues regarding the implementation and management of this program being debated at the highest level of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry. Hence, to open individually understanding who concern of support assistance program in the agricultural sector, the researcher intends to study the effectiveness of the Azam Tani Program especially in the Kubang Pasu District. The specific objectives are to evaluate the level of skills dominated by the participants, to study the factors influencing the development of the projects implementation by participants and to identify the changes of behaviour among participants before and after joining the Azam Tani Program. This study was carried out using questionnaires distributed to 50 respondents of Azam Tani Program. Data collection and analysis were analysed using Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) version 22.0. The analysis techniques used in this study are descriptive analysis, Pearson Correlation analysis and paired t test analysis. The analysis technique were based on each specific objectives. The findings show that there are still some participants who have not yet developed skills since joining this program. In fact, the effectiveness of the implementation of this program requires more emphasis on the factors of monitoring by extension officer, age, educational level, marital status and part-time worker. These factors are significant in analysis coleration at 5% and 10% confidence levels. In addition, there were changes of participant’s behaviour in savings, working hours and initiatives to diversify project inputs and outputs by participants of this program. Overall, the effectiveness of Azam Tani Program in the Kubang Pasu District was achieved but there were certain participant need more monitoring and guidance by agricultural department which is to improve their current implementation productivity

A 70-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) on physiological and biochemical aspects of juvenile mahseer (Tor putitora) fish. Maintaining a 40% protein level, 2 different experimental diets supplemented with 0% Se-NPs and 0.68 Se-NPs mg kg(-1) were fed to triplicate groups of fish. The experiment was conducted in a semistatic condition consisting of 6 fiber tanks. The fish were first acclimatized, and then 30 fish per tank were randomly put into each fiber tank. At the end of the feeding trial, samples were collected from the fish and analyzed. Results obtained showed that the diet supplemented with Se-NPs significantly increased (P < 0.05) physiological aspects like red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit values, and lysozyme activity as compared to the basal diet. Similarly, biochemical parameters including serum growth hormone levels, tissue total protein content, and glutathione peroxidase activity in liver and muscle tissues of T. putitora also significantly (P < 0.05) increased. Thus, dietary Se-NP supplementation at the rate of 0.68 mg kg(-1) diet has very beneficial effects on the physiobiochemical health aspects of juvenile T. putitora.Fisheries and Aquaculture Laboratory, Department of Animal Sciences, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, PakistanQuaid I Azam Univ, Dept Anim Sci, Fisheries & Aquaculture Lab, Islamabad, PakistanQuaid I Azam Univ, Natl Ctr Phys, Islamabad, PakistanSao Paulo State Univ CAUNESP, Ctr Aquaculture, Sao Paulo, BrazilSao Paulo State Univ CAUNESP, Ctr Aquaculture, Sao Paulo, Brazi

Rent-sharing, hold-up, and manufacturing wages in Cote d'Ivoire

Labor costs in Francophone Africa are considered high by the standards of low-income countries, at least in the formal sector. Are they a brake on industrialization, or the result of successful enterprise development? Are they imposed on firms by powerful unions, or government regulations, or a by-product of good firm performance? The authors empirically analyze what determines manufacturing wages in Cote d'Ivoire, using an unbalanced panel of individual wages that allows them to control for observable firm-specific effects. They test the rent-sharing, and hold-up theories of wage determination, as well as some aspects of efficiency-wage theories. Their results lean in favor of both rent-sharing, and hold-up, suggesting that workers have some bargaining power, and that in Cote d'Ivoire workers can force renegotiation of labor contracts, in response to new investments.Economic Theory&Research,Public Health Promotion,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Policies,Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Health Economics&Finance,Statistical&Mathematical Sciences

Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.

IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Encoding through generalized polynomial codes

This paper introduces novel constructions of cyclic codes using semigroup rings instead of polynomial rings. These constructions are applied to define and investigate the BCH, alternant, Goppa, and Srivastava codes. This makes it possible to improve several recent results due to Andrade and Palazzo [1]. © 2011 SBMAC.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Department of Mathematics Quaid-i-Azam University, IslamabadDepartment of Mathematics Ibilce, Unesp, São José do Rio Preto, SPDepartment of Mathematics Ibilce, Unesp, São José do Rio Preto, SPFAPESP: 07/56052-
