Manipulating wavelength-selective emission with heterogeneous photonic crystals

    No full text
The usual near-field radiation profile of a light beam emanating from a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) has a main lobe at the center line of the waveguide. However, a centrally symmetric profile for the emission pattern with two sidelobes can be required in some applications, e.g., Y-type power dividers, wavelength multiplexers, and semiconductor lasers. With such motivations in mind, we present the design of a compact structure that deflects the beam propagation direction in this manner. The idea utilizes the manipulation of the dispersion diagram of cascaded photonic crystals by exploiting the bandgap and self-collimation properties. The waveguide mode in the PCW can be transformed from a propagating mode into a diffusive one by altering the filling factor, which, in turn, leads to off-axis light emission. By using the finite-difference time-domain method, we show that the emission takes place into free space at the inclined output surfaces of the PCW with deviation angles of +/- 45 degrees. Ref’ul-Hitam ‘An Vakfi Hamza Ve Hişâm (Molla Gürânî’nin Ref’ul-Hitam ‘An Vakfi Hamza Ve Hişâm adlı eserinin edisyon kritiği)

In this thesis, firstly the life of Molla Gürânî, one of the great scholars of the Ottoman period, was discussed in detail. The places where the author went from the beginning of his scientific journey, the difficulties he faced, the historical personalities he benefited, the reason for coming to the Ottoman land, the value he brought to scientific life in Anatolia and his deep influence on Fatih Sultan Mehmed were mentioned. At that time, the scientific and political situation in Anatolia, Molla Gürânî's foundations in Anatolia, the works that he copyrighted, the scientists raised and the state administration activities were also mentioned.Afterwards, “Ref'ul-Hitam ‘an Vakfi Hamza and Hişâm were printed and published in three different manuscripts in Süleymaniye/ Lâleli no.57/ 2, Süleymaniye/ Bağdatlı Vehbi no.27 and Bayezid Umumi no.145. an attempt was made to verify. It is well-known by the competent that the most difficult issues in the field of Quran recitation is the subject of the foundation on the words of the cross. This includes issues such as the presence or absence of the hemze in the words, the official line according to the movement before or after the hemze and the different aspects of the Quran which will emerge as a foundation. The author undertook a serious effort to contribute to this important issue, which he himself had difficulty understanding and presenting. The reason why Hamza and Hisham are handled in the work is the fact that these two imams have the most different Quranic verses in the form of foundations in the words of the same. The author, Veliyyullah eş-Shatibiyye's 'şatıbiyye' has found fame with the name of verse and immortal work, Hamza and Hisham of the imam of the verse and the immortal work of Hamza and Hisham emerged in the form of words in the verse of the verse from the 234th couplet until the 254th and the verse as a commentary. The verse has brought this verse as an annotation to the relevant part of the work.In explaining the couplets he proceeded to explain and brought witnesses from Arab language scholars such as Ca’beri, Sibeveyh, Yunus and Abu El-iz al-Vasiti. In explaining each couplet, he took the words of the verses that could be an example for that matter and did not give the verses in whole. In this sense, he made many samples. However, there are places where he rejects and criticizes the scholars whose names are mentioned. We also see that he brought his most severe criticism to Muhammad b. Cezire who is accepted authority by the alliance. While criticizing, the author not only rejects the matter but also reveals his evidence. The fact that he supported his critics with evidence is exactly what is expected of the scholars and is important in terms of demonstrating his knowledge of the issue he is addressing. It also reveals the great value that our ancient scholars have given to this area. While doing this study, we set out to present this writing, which has a very valuable place in the issue of foundation, which is a difficult issue, to the benefit of the scientific world

A design-based study of data-driven asset management for Storm Surge Barriers: Implementing predictive maintenance, digital twins and realizing data governance for the current asset management at Rijkswaterstaat

    No full text
Rijkswaterstaat’s Storm Surge Barriers are expensive assets providing economic value with the expectation of future returns. The maintenance is executed by the asset management department, which aims at maximizing operability without sacrificing safety and reliability. However, regular maintenance becomes more stringent as circumstances change, and a budget shortfall is expected in the same timeframe. These operational and economical interferences urge the asset management department to adapt using more data-driven approaches replacing (some) physical inspections and only conducting maintenance when needed. This so-called data-driven asset management has the potential to reduce costs and ensure reliability. Despite the promise, there is no guidance for developing data-driven asset management. In this thesis, design principles are developed to assist in better decision-making using data-driven technologies, resulting in effective maintenance. These new design principles integrate three different areas into the current asset management: Digital Twins (DT), providing a virtual environment for safely testing in various scenarios, Predictive Maintenance (PdM) for confidently predicting a future asset failure and Data Governance (DG), ensuring the data quality for appropriate decision-making for the mentioned data-driven technologies. In other words, the goal of this research is to develop design principles that overcome real-world asset data-related problems during the implementation of DT, PdM and DG within the asset management context. The qualitative design-based research methodology consists of the following steps: Identifying real-world problems, developing appropriate solutions, and then finalizing by prescribing actionable sentences, also known as design principles. This research design was demonstrated in a real-life case for the Storm Surge Barriers asset class at Rijkswaterstaat (RWS). Two data-collecting research methods were utilized. The first data collecting method was the literature study, which acquired information from 25+ scientific papers from three developing fields in the scientific literature: PdM, DT and DG. The second was a series of semi-structured interviews held with 33 RWS interviewees in different parts of the organization, collecting real-life asset data problems and the associated best practices. To guide the interviews across the data-driven developments and the current status of data governance within RWS, an interview protocol was constructed. The interviews results revealed contrasting views on (1) the SSB openness to new technology, (2) the alignment between asset management priorities and the data-driven technology, and (3) data access by third parties. These contrasting viewpoints unknowingly construct invisible (almost) impermeable walls between different layers in the RWS organization, which prevents knowledge spillovers, resulting in departments maturing at different rates and impeding the understanding and communication between them. As part of the research design, four types of design principles were formulated. The first was the interview-derived design principles. The second type was the literature derived design principles acquired by the results from the literature study. After that, the interview and the literature-derived principles were combined into 'the refined design principles’. The last type is the data governance design principles, for which the problems were inspired by semi-structured interviews and are solely solved by the current data governance literature. Thereafter, the refined and data governance design principles were tested within the context of the DT and the PdM by using data flow diagrams. The benefit of using the data flow diagrams is to test if the selected design principles improve the practices of asset management. Consequently, 33 design principles were developed across the four types of design principles that prescribe guidance on how PdM, DT and DG contribute to developing data-driven asset management. From these, 4 were data governance design principles, and 12 were refined design principles. The refined design principles were not found in prior literature and could be further grouped into short-term and long-term relevance for asset management. The novelty that these refined design principles bring is twofold, filling in two gaps in the literature. Firstly, It brings clear guidelines which were previously scattered and unclearly presented across the scientific literature. Secondly, these design principles are approached in a novel manner by combining the core insights from the literature and the inclusion of empirical best practices in a real-life case. The results of implementing the relevant data governance and refined design principles into the AM are twofold. Firstly, the DeP’s enhanced the DT from primarily visualization into a more multifunctional usable digital asset for various asset management purposes. Secondly, implementing the same set of principles enhanced the PdM by including the most important factors to produce reliable automatic predictions to better manage the maintenance schedule. The managerial recommendation is that the digital twins and predictive maintenance development need to develop hand in hand with data governance aspects and utilize a system to centralize the knowledge across all storm surge barriers, like periodic communities of practices. A lack of these two crucial developments will inhibit RWS long-term vision of transitioning from a pure civil organization to a hybrid organization: A synergy between civil engineering discipline and data-driven technologies.Management of Technology (MoT

Foregrounding and Metaphor: A Stylistic Study on Hamza Yusuf’s Religious Poems

    No full text
Poetry not only communicates information but also arouses the readers’ feeling to a thoughtful sense and the life’s perception of the author through parable objects. Poetry could be perceptually prominent if it is expressed through linguistic deviation, which further defined as “foregrounding”. This article is an attempt to provide understandings from the analysis of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s religious poems that engage both semantic and sound patterns (phonological) analyses. The semantic level of the poems dealt with metaphorical analysis as realized in several lines that observed the foregrounded words, phrase and sentences which are semantically deviant, and are classifiable into personification and depersonification. At the phonological level, the sounds patterns cover the use of certain sounds found on major lines of both poems, the distribution of similar sound patterns can produce the aesthetic effects, the common observed styles found in Hamza Yusuf’s religious poems are the repetitions or anaphora, assonance, alliteration, rhythmic sounds of the beginning, in- and end rhymes, and the middle rhyme

Lyapunov-Based Model Predictive Control for Stable Operation of a 9-Level Crossover Switches Cell Inverter in Grid Connection Mode

    No full text
This study proposes the application of a Lyapunov-based Model Predictive Control (L-MPC) approach to a 9-level Crossover Switches Cell (CSC9) converter operating in grid connection mode. The proposed method utilizes the structure of the classical finite-control-set MPC (FCS-MPC) technique while integrating a cost function that requires no tuning. By deriving the cost function based on Lyapunov theory, the system stability is ensured. Notably, the suggested approach offers several advantages over traditional MPC controllers. Firstly, it eliminates the need for gain tuning, thereby simplifying the implementation process. Secondly, the proposed controller prioritizes stability as a key design aspect. The presented simulation results prove that the proposed controller effectively regulates the voltage of the DC capacitor around its desired value and feed a smooth sinusoidal current to the grid with low total harmonic distortion (THD) while operating at a unity power factor.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.DC systems, Energy conversion & Storag
