Sierra Leone After the End of the Armed Conflict

    No full text
Since March 1991, Sierra Leone has experienced continuous civil strife culminating in a protracted civil war, leading to widespread destructions of infrastructures and property, and the death of thousands of people, many more injured and over half of the population displaced. Three peace accords were signed in 1996, 1997 and 1999 in Abidjan, Conakry and Lame respectively. However, these agreements did not bring peace. In this paper, the author situates the reasons and the nature of the conflict, the events leading to both government and rebel leaders declaring in January 2002 the end to conflict. Finally, he looks at Sierra Leone following the formal declaration of an end to the war

Awareness and use of assistive technology among older adults with vision impairments in the Midwestern United States

Plan BOlder adults with vision impairments make up more than 18% of the population of the United States (Boswell, 2000; Braille Institute, 2000). If these trends continue an estimated 13 million older adults are likely to be affected by a visual impairment or blindness in the next 20 to 30 years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2002) and the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics (2000), there are significantly higher proportions of older adults in certain states around the country. States with the highest numbers of older adults who experience a visual impairment are centered within the Midwestern region of the United States (National Eye Institute, 2002). Older adults who are visually impaired find it increasingly difficult to perform daily living activities and remaining independent. The use of assistive technology may play a significant role in the lives of older adults who are visually impaired or blind. Current research however, indicates that most older adults with disabilities, including those with vision loss are unaware of the availability of devices to improve their independent functioning (Russell, 1997; Campell, 1999; Gitlin, 2002). At the same time, studies suggest that maintaining independence is one of greatest concerns among older adults (Mack, 1997). Additionally, research has shown that older adults with vision impairments have a 15% higher probability of being admitted to a nursing home than other older adults (Moore, 1994). There is a need to examine the level of awareness and use of adaptive devices among older adults who are visually impaired or blind, and of the possible effects assistive technology may have on their quality of life. The current study examined the level of awareness and frequency of use of assistive technology devices among older persons with visual impairments in the Midwestern United States. Awareness and use of assistive technology was measured among 113 adults more than 55 years of age who were identified as experiencing a visual impairment, and who resided in the three states of Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Information was gathered through the use of a survey designed by the primary researcher for this study. Additional areas of information gathered by the researcher included demographic information, medical and health issues, safety, timeliness of services, and available funding sources. Results suggest that older adults with visual impairments were not aware of assistive technology that is available to enhance general activities of daily living. Magnifiers and Close Circuit Televisions (CCTV) were the most commonly used forms of assistive technology among participants in the survey, which corresponds to the reported limitations of reading and writing. While no statistically significant findings were found, there were some important trends to consider. Overall, participants in the study were not concerned with safety or general medical and health needs. At the same time, a large number of survey respondents indicated that they had at least one disabling condition in addition to their visual loss. Many had two or more additional disabling conditions. Deafness and cardiovascular disease were found to be the top two secondary health conditions. Perhaps the most distressing results related to the lack of available funding to support assistive technology purchases. The vast majority (87.6%) of respondents choose “self-pay” as their primary funding source for assistive technology. Results suggest the need for increased education about available technology to enhance daily living skills as well as identification of funding sources to support technology for older adults with visual impairments

More recently, research into Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have touted promising positive outcomes for youth, which include, but are not limited to, alleviating internalizing and externalizing disorders, and enhancing self-regulation, and frustration tolerance (Long et al., 2015; Zack et al., 2014). The current pilot study examined the effects of an eight-week Relaxation Movement Group (RMG) on a clinical population of students (N = 9) attending a partial hospitalization program. Specific aims of the study included addressing the following: 1) What were participants' beliefs regarding the acceptability of the RMG program? 2) Was the RMG program implemented as initially designed? 3) Were there clinically meaningful changes in participants' behavior and functioning from pre to post in externalizing behaviors, adaptive behaviors, points earned in the Partial Program, or number of restraints? The current study used measures such as acceptability and fidelity rating scales, the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition, Teacher Rating Scale (BASC-3 TRS), and records of participants' daily points and frequency of restraints. Results of the pilot study indicated that, overall, participants' acceptability of the RMG program was high. Regarding fidelity, the majority of participants received high quantity and quality RMG programming, as initially intended although fidelity was variable across participants. Finally, results suggested clinically meaningful changes in some of the participants' RCI scores on the Externalizing and Adaptive Skills Composites of the BASC-3 TRS from pre to post, positive trends (i.e., increases) in the mean number of points some participants earned before and after RMG implementation.Psy.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Clareanne B. "Have you really read Job? Read him, read him again and again" : Kierkegaard, Vischer, and Barth on the book of Job

    No full text
This thesis explores the reception history of the book of Job, particularly in Søren Kierkegaard’s Three Upbuilding Discourses and Repetition, Wilhelm Vischer’s “Hiob, ein Zeuge Jesu Christi,” and Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics. It examines the hermeneutical presuppositions of these three scholars and how the scholars themselves fit into the history of interpretation, showing that they use a post-critical allegorical interpretation in order to explore the freedom of God and humanity. Chapter one offers a defense of using reception history in biblical studies. By walking through Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories on great time and the chronotope, it argues that great texts continue to live and grow even after their completion and canonization. During this “afterlife,” their meaning expands as more readers participate in their interpretations. Chapter two examines the afterlife of the book of Job in the hands of Christian exegetes, focusing on allegory and freedom in the interpretations by Gregory the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Immanuel Kant. Chapter three looks at the unusual and rich interpretations of Job by Kierkegaard—the autonymous upbuilding discourse on Job’s response to his suffering in the prologue and the novella Repetition as an interpretation of the dialogue between Job and his friends. Chapter four examines the interpretation of the book of Job in Vischer’s mini-commentary. Vischer sees the character of Job as one whose devotion to God goes beyond the laws that God purveys and the doctrine that seeks to explain God. Referring specifically to the works of Kierkegaard and Vischer, Karl Barth’s work on Job—the focus of chapter five—sees the book of Job as illustrative of Jesus Christ’s relationship to God and humanity. All three scholars incorporated allegory while ruminating on the freedom of God in the book of Job. The final chapter evaluates their interpretations while addressing their similarities and differences

TCC(graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro de Ciências Biológicas. Biologia. As mudanças climáticas globais provocarão conseqüências físicas e químicas no ambiente marinho.
