Geopolymers are hardened aluminosilicate gel that develop strength via the crosslinking of tetrahedral silicate and aluminate. Past Research has highlighted a wide range of mechanical properties of geopolymer synthesised from various aluminosilicate materials. This research focuses on studying the effect of variation in the percentages of metakaolin, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide at a fixed water to solids ratio on the development of geopolymer structure and compressive strength. Kaolin was thermally treated and XRD and FTIR traced the changes in crystalline Kaolin and its transformation into a more disordered structure of metakaolin. Characterisation techniques were used for the study of geopolymer produced. FTIR analysis illustrated the changes in the characteristic bands of metakaolin after being activated with sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide to form geopolymer. The 27Al and 29Si Solid State MAS NMR spectra confirmed the formation of polymerised tetrahedral silicate interconnected to tetrahedral aluminate in the form of Q4(4Al) and Q4(3Al) which are responsible for the attained compressive strength of geopolymer. The produced geopolymers exhibited high early compressive strength and high 28-day compressive strength in the range of 30–81 MPa. This promotes the use of geopolymers as a replacement to Ordinary Portland cement especially in targeted construction applications. This study is part of Ph.D of author Heba Fouad and the PhD was a fellowship granted by Yousef Jameel Foundation. Also, Heba Fouad also would like to show her gratitude to Dr. Abdel Hamid Emwas and Dr. Mariusz Jaremko for conducting Solid State MAS NMR samples in KAUST Core lab

Lessons learned from the implementation of a formative teacher evaluation system: an instrumental case study

    No full text
Scholarship in the field of teacher evaluation has increased recently following seminal studies on its importance (Kane & Staiger, 2011; Weisberg et al., 2009) that led to federal policy changes that incentivize its use (U.S. Department of Education, 2009). Scholarship began with agreement across the field about the importance of valid tools and reliable methods, but gave way to widespread disagreement about the best uses of teacher evaluation. Many vocal researchers support summative uses (for example: Gordon, Kane, & Staiger, 2006; Hanushek & Rivkin, 2006), while others call for formative approaches, linked to professional learning opportunities (for example: Papay, 2012; Sinnema & Robinson, 2007). Engaging in formative evaluation may lead to teacher efficacy (Danielson, 2012), teacher self-reports of professional learning (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 2013), positive teaching practices (Reinhorn, 2013; Sartain et al., 2011), and student achievement (Dee & Wyckoff, 2015; Taylor & Tyler, 2012). Yet, studying formative evaluation systems is an emergent field, with many gaps. The literature has not adequately made recommendations about school-level programs that support formative evaluation or provided descriptive examples of systems that perform well. In addition, while many have proposed the importance of understanding how teachers actually use feedback, few detail this process. This instrumental case study provides a description of the teacher evaluation system at one charter school in Washington D.C. It explores how the formative evaluation system was constructed and what the outcomes are for teacher learning and the school’s climate. Findings reveal that the purposeful inclusion of formative processes has led to deep and sustained teacher learning in some cases, but has been less impactful in others. Further, formative evaluation practices support positive school climate, such that when the evaluation system was implemented well, teachers reported feeling supported by school climate, and when practices faltered, teachers described negative outcomes regarding the school’s climate. Thus, sustaining formative teacher evaluation processes is an important task for school leadership. Yet, data indicate that sustaining these systems is a difficult process that requires multi-year training and follow-up. Findings also reveal that teachers are in need of evaluation that is not just formative, but is also linked to collaborative structures.Ed.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Heba A. Abd

Nyckelord: Ledarskapsfilosofier, högpresterande, fastighetsmäklare, HRM-praktikerTitle:  Leadership Styles and Performance Levels in the Real Estate Brokerage Industry: A Qualitative Study Level:  Bachelor's Thesis in Business Administration Author:  Maral Gankhuyag and Heba Saied Supervisor:  Lars-Johan Åge Date: 22-05-2024 Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to identify and compare the relationships between different leadership styles within HRM philosophies (Human Resource Management) and commission-based employees across three different performance levels, focusing on the real estate profession. Method: The study used a qualitative, abductive approach and included ten semi-structured interviews with registered real estate agents in Stockholm and Uppsala, divided into three performance levels based on annual turnover. The interview questions were designed based on the theoretical framework. Results and Conclusion: The conclusion shows that different leadership styles within HRM affect real estate agents' performance. Soft HRM, emphasizing employee well-being, is particularly effective at lower performance levels. Hard HRM, focusing on structured development processes and reward systems, increases productivity at all levels, especially among high-performing agents. Thesis Contribution: The study contributes to business administration by focusing on practical leadership and the relationships between leadership actions and real estate agents' performance. This can inspire the development of leadership within real estate companies to improve employee performance, increase turnover, and create a safe work environment. Suggestions for Further Research: A quantitative study with more respondents and exploration of different geographic areas, industries, performance measures, and cultural influences on HRM strategies would be highly interesting to explore. Improving students’ knowledge and skills using an innovative Pecha Kucha presentation assignment in a History of Economic Thought class

    No full text
In this article, the author provides motivation in allocating a new formative Pecha Kucha (PK) presentation assignment on one economic school of thought to groups of students in a History of Economic Thought (HET) course. Each group would then post its PK on the Moodle course forum and comment on other PK presentations. The assignment was aimed at engaging students more with technology; in learning on their own, with each other and from each other; in acquiring abstracting skills; in addressing the breadth rather than only the depth of learning; and in making use of the brevity of PK in shortening the long history of economics. The author expounds the advantages and limitations of this assignment in addition to its applicability in other courses

Diagnostic Evaluation of Urinary Angiogenin (ANG)and Clusterin (CLU) as Biomarker for Bladder Cancer

    No full text
Bladder carcinoma is an important worldwide health problem. Both cystoscopy and urine cytology used in detecting bladder cancer suffer from drawbacks where cystos- copy is an invasive method and urine cytology shows low sensitivity in low grade tumors. This study validates easier and less time-consuming techniques to evaluate the value of com- bined use of angiogenin and clusterin in comparison and combination with voided urine cytology in the detection of bladder cancer patients. This study includes malignant (blad- der cancer patients, n=50), benign (n=20) and healthy (n=20) groups. The studied groups were subjected to cystoscopic examination, detection of bilharzial antibodies, urine cytolo- gy, and estimation of urinary angiogenin and clusterin by ELISA. The overall sensitivity and specificity were 66 and 75 % for angiogenin, 70 and 82.5 % for clusterin and 46 and 80 % for voided urine cytology. Combined sensitivity of voided urine cytology with the two studied biomarkers was 88 % which is higher than the combined sensitivity of both markers alone (82 %) and that of the cytology with each marker (76 and 80 %) for angiogenin and clusterin respective- ly. In conclusion, combined use of the cytology with the studied biomarkers can improve the sensitivity for detecting bladder cancer, and may be very useful in monitoring the effectiveness of antiangiogenic and apoptotic therapies in bladder cancer

    Nouns with the formative -nia

    No full text
The author has described a number of semantic types with their common formative -nia (nomina loci, nomina instrument!, nomina actionia, ' nomina acti, nomina collectivi etc.). The types have been divided into productive and non-productive. The aim of the analysis was to define the function of the formative -nia in contemporary language and what words it forms. Hie author statès in conclusion that of all types with the formative -nia only two are semantically clear i.e. nomina loci and nomina instrument!. She has also noticed the retrogression of the formative function in space nouns and its special function in forming new names of large separate units.Zadanie pt.
