    <Articles>Founding of the Toho-Kai

The Toho-Kai is one of the Japanese nationalist parties in the thirties. The party was characterized by uniqueness of its leaders' political career. Most of its leaders (Seigo Nakano 中野正剛 was the most famous) had belonged to the progressive group of a conservative party, the Kensei-Kai 憲政会 (later the Minsei-To 民政党), and inspired parliamentalism in the 20's. But in the period of the Great Depression and "Manchurian Incident" they renounced their parliamentalism and shifted their grounds to a social-nationalism, which consisted of three political ideas "Asia Bloc", "Controlled Economy" and "Dictatorial-Government". Nakano and his comrades intended to form a coalition cabinet of the Minsei-To and Seiyu-Kai 政友会 in 1931, but they failed and had to secede from the Minsei-To. Learning from the Fascist's movements in Italy and Germany, they founded their own party, the Toho-Kai, in 1936. They aimed at expanding it into a large scale mass-party like the Nazi and reorganizing political and economic order according to their social-nationalistic policy. Regarding this party as a good mirror reflecting the political trends of Japanese brougeois-nationalists who were in sympathy with democracy in the 20's but with fascism in the 30's, the author, in this study, tries to analize the movement of Nakano and his comrades from their secession from the Minsei-To to the formation of the Toho-Kai

Developing intercultural competence through books on Poland written by foreigners

    Get PDF
In the present article, two books on Polish culture written by foreigners are analysed in detail from the point of view of the intercultural approach to teaching foreign languages, namely Berlin-Warszawa-Express. Pociąg do Polski (2013) by Steffen Möller and Jestem Kazu. Japończyk w Polsce (2017) by Kazutaki Sasaki. The author explains why this kind of text constitutes relevant material to develop intercultural competence during classes of Polish as a foreign language. The definition and methods of shaping intercultural competence are recalled in the article. The author emphasizes that books by foreigners create an opportunity to discover not only Polish culture, but also the cultures represented by the authors of the texts discussed. Moreover, they enable students to talk naturally about their own respective cultures in the context of comparisons with Polish culture. The article contains proposals of exercises aimed at promoting intercultural dialogue in the process of teaching Polish as a foreign language, which are based on chosen fragments of the analysed books.W artykule szczegółowo zanalizowane zostały – z perspektywy podejścia międzykulturowego do nauczania języków obcych – dwie książki autorstwa cudzoziemców poświęcone kulturze polskiej: Berlin-Warszawa-Express. Pociąg do Polski (2013) Steffena Möllera i Jestem Kazu.

DMSP and DMS in coastal fast ice and under-ice water of Lützow-Holm Bay, eastern Antarctica

The combined concentration of total dimethylsulfoniopropionate and dimethylsulfide (DMSP+DMS) were measured in Antarctic fast ice on the coast of Lützow-Holm Bay, eastern Antarctica. High bulk-ice DMSP+DMS and chlorophyll a concentrations were found at the bottom of the sea ice, and these concentrations were higher than those in the under-ice water. The bulk-ice DMSP+DMS and chlorophyll a concentrations were highly correlated (r2=0.68, P<0.001), suggesting that the high bulk-ice DMSP+DMS concentrations were caused mainly by the presence of algae assemblages in the ice. The calculated brine DMSP+DMS concentrations were as high as 1100 nM in the bottom ice layer, and the vertical profile patterns of brine DMSP+DMS concentrations were almost the same as for the bulk ice, mainly because of the small amount of variability in the vertical brine volume fraction. DMSP+DMS and chlorophyll a concentrations in the under-ice water increased, whereas the salinity of the under-ice water decreased, during the sampling period. These results reflect the supply of freshwater containing high levels of DMSP+DMS to the water just under the ice as the ice melted. These results suggest that sea-ice melting could be important to sulfur cycling in coastal ice-covered regions of the polar oceans

Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.We introduce a simple spray drying method for the scaleup production of spherical organic (lignin) particles with sizes between 0.85 and 1.57 µm. We assess the surface energy of the lignin particles by inverse gas chromatography to reveal their role in composites synthesized with unsaturated polyester. Such nanocomposites are shown to be transparent to electromagnetic irradiation (millimeter wave bands). The permittivity and tanδ of the composite material reached values 3.01 and 0.01 at 28 GHz with 10% lignin content. Vinyl groups were introduced on the surface of the particles to achieve enhanced interfacial adhesion, and resulted in a reduced relative permittivity (2.75). Together with wave interactions, the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites are put in perspective, opening new opportunities in the development of bio-based devices for 5G high-speed communication.Peer reviewe

Ken 拳 was the most popular game in Japan from the middle of the 18th to the middle of the 20th century. Originating in China and developing initially in the licensed quarters this drinking game soon transcended the boundaries of the red light districts and became popular among the whole population, young and old, men and women, commoners and samurai, either as numbers-ken (hon-ken, kazu-ken) or as sansukumi-ken (ken of the three who are afraid of one another), especially as fox-ken (kitsune-ken, Tōhachi-ken). The existence of six instruction books for the game published within the short time span of 85 years only during the late Edo period gives convincing proof of the game’s popularity. The author discusses these six books and four other ones from the 20th century and states that these instruction books may not only be consulted by ken players or researchers in the history of games, but their contents might be valuable also for researchers in literary, cultural, art and social history of Japan.Ken 拳 was the most popular game in Japan from the middle of the 18th to the middle of the 20th century.
