My Elvis Blackout and Neverland: Truth, Fiction and Celebrity in the Postmodernist Heterobiographical Composite Novel
No full textA PhD by publication comprising two of my books, My Elvis Blackout and Neverland, accompanied by a reflective and critical exegesis, which examines notions of truth, fiction and celebrity in the composite novel through a broadly analytical and practice-based methodology. The exegesis begins by exploring the links between the methodology of the fine artist and the new creative writer. It then demonstrates that My Elvis Blackout and Neverland represent an original contribution to knowledge in the way that they explore and develop literary form (the ‘composite’ novel), and, in their exploration of celebrity, myth-making and fictional hagiography, and that the two books function as performative critiques which probe the boundaries between fiction and the fabricated reality of celebrity culture. My exegesis analyses Linda Boldrini’s term ‘heterobiography’ (2012) with particular reference to Michael Ondaatje’s The Collected Works of Billy The Kid (1981), which as a bricolage relies upon the reader’s pre-conceived recognition of the historicity of its protagonist and continually tests the boundaries between fact and fiction. In this section of the exegesis, I propose that what sets My Elvis Blackout and Neverland apart from Billy The Kid is that whilst Ondaatje’s book certainly does exploit the confusions between fact, fiction, autobiography and history, it remains firmly set within the timeframe that its historical protagonist inhabits. My Elvis Blackout and Neverland remain grounded within their readers’ expectations of American settings contemporary to their nominative protagonists, but both books also feature dilations in both historical and geographical setting. Through analysis I have come to perceive ‘the celebrity persona’ as an identikit image assembled by thousands of witnesses. A photo fit photomontage tiered with impressions of subjective provenance, each layered transparency filtered through the fears and desires of fans and critics. Whereas other historiographic metafictions use historical figures as singular characters, My Elvis Blackout and Neverland can be seen to be utilising an ‘identikit’ concept to present their respective protagonists as manyheaded Hydras, or multiple probability ‘versions’ from parallel universes. By a conflation of terms, Hutcheon’s ‘historiographic metafiction’ (1988) and Boldrini’s ‘heterobiography’ (2012), My Elvis Blackout and Neverland are in fact historiobiographic metafictions. The exegesis concludes by establishing my own works’ live impact on the overarching celebrity metanarratives, and their inevitable organic status
The XMM-Newton long look of NGC 1365: uncovering of the obscured X-ray source
No full textWe present an analysis of the extreme obscuration variability observed during an XMM–Newton 5-d continuous monitoring of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) in NGC 1365. The source was in a reflection-dominated state in the first ∼1.5 d, then a strong increase in the 7–10 keV emission was observed in ∼10 h, followed by a symmetric decrease. The spectral analysis of the different states clearly shows that this variation is due to an uncovering of the X-ray source. From this observation, we estimate a size of the X-ray source DS < 1013 cm, a distance of the obscuring clouds R∼ 1016 cm and a density n∼ 1011 cm−3. These values suggest that the X-ray absorption/reflection originates from the broad-line region clouds. This is also supported by the resolved width of the iron narrow Kα emission line, consistent with the width of the broad Hβ line

When Joseph Campbell, in his seminal work Hero With a ThousandFaces, describes the cycle of the hero̶separation, initiation, and return̶Campbell is describing a pattern that fits the epic cycle of the stories of Jesus Christ, King Arthur, and hundreds, if not tens of thousands, of heroes throughout literary history. The journey of these heroes is the monomythic set of trials and battles that lead to the rise of these heroes. The ascent of Elvis Presley and the somewhat fantastic tales of his lifestyle, his untimely death, and our memorializing of him all combine to serve the pattern of Joseph Campbellʼs theory of the cycle of the hero. That is, Elvis, the real man, becomes in his lifetime and after his death, an unreal and transformative American myth. While celebrity is a relatively ephemeral phenomenon, Elvisʼs career and his post-mortem career carry a resonance which increase yearly and have never suffered decay. It is quite possible that Elvis Presleyʼs face is the most recognizable human image in the entire history of man. The unusual nature of Elvisʼs celebrity prompts us to examine the how and why of Elvisʼs fame and the proliferation of his image well into the 21st century. This paper will also specifically address the historiography of the post-modern Elvis and the evolution of the Elvis myth
Long-term wind-driven X-ray spectral variability of NGC 1365 with Swift
No full textWe present long-term (months–years) X-ray spectral variability of the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC 1365 as observed by Swift, which provides well-sampled observations over a much longer time-scale (six years) and a much larger flux range than is afforded by other observatories. At very low luminosities, the spectrum is very soft, becoming rapidly harder as the luminosity increases and then, above a particular luminosity, softening again. At a given flux level, the scatter in hardness ratio is not very large, meaning that the spectral shape is largely determined by the luminosity. The spectra were therefore summed in luminosity bins and fitted with a variety of models. The best-fitting model consists of two power laws, one unabsorbed and another, more luminous, which is absorbed. In this model, we find a range of intrinsic 0.5–10.0 keV luminosities of approximately 1.1–3.5 erg s?1, and a very large range of absorbing columns, of approximately 1022–1024 cm?2. Interestingly, we find that the absorbing column decreases with increasing luminosity, but that this result is not due to changes in ionization. We suggest that these observations might be interpreted in terms of a wind model in which the launch radius varies as a function of ionizing flux and disc temperature and therefore moves out with increasing accretion rate, i.e. increasing X-ray luminosity. Thus, depending on the inclination angle of the disc relative to the observer, the absorbing column may decrease as the accretion rate goes up. Otrajā nodaļā aplūkota un analizēta sumo vēsturiskā attīstība, izpētot arī rikiši dzīvojamās telpas “Heja” un to kultūru, kā arī izpētot sumo turnīrus “Bašo”, savukārt trešajā nodaļā, balstoties uz plašsaziņas līdzekļos publicētajām intervijām un rakstiem, analizētas bušido vērtības sumo cīņās. Pētījuma rezultāti ļauj secināt, ka bušido uzvedības un goda kodekss balstīts uz septiņiem principiem jeb tikumiem, kas jāievēro katram sumo cīnītājam, tādā veidā parādot, kā sasniegt ķermenisko un garīgo pilnību. Anita Stashulane The work on presented are 45 pages. The bachelor thesis consists of 3 chapters. In the first chapter, a theoretical analysis of the literature on bushido is carried out. The second chapter examines and analyzes the historical development of sumo, also studying the rikishi living quarters “Heya” and their culture, as well as studying the sumo tournaments “Bushido”, while the third chapter, based on interviews and articles published in the media, analyzes the values of bushido in sumo fights. The results of the study allow us to conclude that the bushido code of conduct and honor is based on seven principles or virtues that every sumo fighter must follow, thus showing how to achieve physical and mental perfection. Também é analisado as principais escolas de arquitetura, tanto européias como as brasileiras que consolidaram um novo modo de compreender o programa de ensino das disciplinas e do curso de arquitetura no ensino moderno e contemporâneo, onde a Bauhaus, na Alemanha, influenciou muitas escolas no Rio e São Paulo, como a FAUUSP e FAUUBC, esta última elemento norteador da pesquisa geradora dos estudos de caso nos anos de 2001 e 2002, onde lecionei como professor assistente e posteriormente como responsável na disciplina de Projeto de Arquitetura, consolidando um conjunto de material para a análise do que chamo de experiência didática vivenciada.The present dissertation aims to study and analyze the modern house projects which have contributed to new living architecture and urban concepts, and the acknowledgement of these intentions and purposes is used as guideline for the development of didactical orientations. Different projectual concepts that belong to the Twentieth Century architecture history are also compared in order to set up an internationally constructed scenario which will include brazilian didactical teaching experiences (FAUUSP and FAUUBC) as well as historical european examples such as the BAUHAUS experience in Germany. The faculty teaching carreer of the author shall help the construction of the concept he names as shared didactical experience

No full textDiplomska naloga opisuje izbiro odprtokodnega sistema za nadzor in pregled računalniške opreme v podjetju, ki si komercialne programske opreme za ta namen ne more privoščiti.
Na kratko smo predstavili sisteme za nadzor (Nagios, Zabbix in Zenoss) in pregled (Open-AudIT in OCS Inventory NG) računalniške opreme. Na podlagi kriterijev in lastnega testiranja smo izmed predstavljenih izbrali Nagios kot sistem za nadzor in Open-AudIT kot sistem za pregled. V nadaljevanju smo podrobneje opisali izbrana sistema, kjer smo zajeli bistvene značilnosti za razumevanje njunega delovanja. Na koncu smo prikazali še razvoj vtičnika, ki smo ga razvili za potrebe nadzora namenske naprave v podjetju.
Na uradni strani Nagiosa najdemo veliko število vtičnikov, tako uradnih s strani avtorja sistema kot neuradnih, ki so jih razvili uporabniki sistema. Zaradi varnostne politike v podjetju nam obstoječi vtičniki niso koristili, kar je bil razlog za razvoj lastnega vtičnika.The thesis describes selection of an open source monitoring and auditing system for computer equipment in an enterprise, where the cost of same purpose commercial software is too high.Control systems (Nagios, Zabbix and Zenoss) and auditing systems (Open-Audit and OCS Inventory NG) for computer equipment are shortly presented first. Using the comparative criteria and our own testing we selected Nagios as the most suitable monitoring system and Open-Audit as the best auditing system in our case. Additionally both selected systems are described in detail, including the essential features of their functionality. Finally, we presented the development of a specific plugin for the control of a special device in the enterprise.A large number of plugins exist on the official site of Nagios, some written by the author of the Nagios system and others developed by other system users. Due to security policy of the enterprise existing plugins were not beneficial, thus we developed our own plugin

Nebanku finanšu sektora attīstība spēlē ļoti lielu lomu tautsaimniecības attīstībā, tādēļ autors izrādīja vēlmi aplūkot šī sektora dalībniekus, to nozīmi Latvijas tautsaimniecības attīstībā gan vēsturiski, gan šobrīd. Darbā tiek analizēts pašreizējais nebanku finanšu sektora dalībnieku sastāvs, to funkcijas, un to attīstība Latvijā no 2013.gada līdz 2018.gadam. Darba saturs ir izklāstīts trīs nodaļās. Pirmajā darba daļā autors analizē iegūto informāciju par nebanku finanšu sektora dalībniekiem, to būtību un funkcijām. Otrajā darba daļā tiek analizēti nebanku finanšu sektora dalībnieki laikaposmā no 2013. līdz 2018.gadam. Trešajā daļā autors veic anketēšanas rezultātu apkopošanu un analīzi. Darba nobeigumā tika veikti secinājumi un priekšlikumi nebanku finanšu sektora attīstības uzlabošanai. Izstrādātais darbs ir veikts uz 66 lapaspusēm, satur 37 attēlus un 9 tabulas.The subject of the bachelor's thesis is "Development tendencies and significance of Latvian non-bank financial sector in the national economy". The development of the nonbank financial sector plays a very important role in the development of the national economy, therefore the author expressed a desire to look at the participants of this sector, their role in the development of the Latvian economy both historically and now. The thesis analyzes the current composition of non-bank financial sector participants, their functions and their development in Latvia from 2013 to 2018. The contents of the work are presented in three chapters. In the first part of the work, the author analyzes the information obtained about nonbank financial sector participants, their nature and functions. The second part of the work analyzes non-bank financial sector participants from 2013 to 2018. In the third part, the author summarizes and analyzes the results of the questionnaire. At the end of the work, conclusions and suggestions were made to improve the development of the non-bank financial sector. The developed work has been carried out on 66 pages, contains 37 images and 9 tables
