Experimental Analyses and Numerical Models of CLT Shear Walls under Cyclic Loading
This paper reports the results of an experimental campaign performed at the University of Tokyo on cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels subjected to lateral loads. Analytical and numerical interpretations are provided as well, comparing the experimental analysis results with two methods: fi rstly, an analytical method to preliminarily evaluate the ultimate strength of the four panels, based on the geometrical dimensions of the openings and of the panel; secondly, a fi nite element model has been developed in order to provide some guidelines for calculating the stiff ness and elastic behaviour of CLT panels subjected to lateral loads. The experimental tests showed that the CLT panels are as more britt le and stiff er as more the diff erence between the total panel area and the fenestrated area is high. The presence of large openings determined stress concentration at the corners where failure occurred for the att ainment of the maximum tension strength in the inner layer. The proposed analytical formulation was shown to fairly closely predict the ultimate strength of panels with same geometry, characteristics and boundary condition, allowing preliminary information of this relevant parameter
Valeria Della Valle, The language of Luigi Einaudi between classicism and pathos, in Luigi Einaudi: economic freedom and social cohesion, by Alfredo Gigliobianco, Rome-Bari, 2010, p. 138-154. The author makes a linguistic reading of texts by Luigi Einaudi, to identify the lexical, stylistic and rhetorical characters of the writings of the economist, the popularizer, the journalist, the President of the Italian Republic. On them has long weighed the label of a crisp, neat, icy writer. In fact, subjecting its vast production on close examination, it reveals the extraordinary ability in the use of various language modes: solemnity, friendly conversational syntactic, lexical inventions and popular modes, descriptions with bright colors and extreme simplicity
White middle-class men in Rio de Janeiro. The making of a dominant subject
Based on the biographical accounts of upper-middle-class white men living in wealthy parts of Rio di Janeiro, Valeria Ribeiro Corossacz analyzes specific experiences of whiteness as they are produced at the intersection of multiple categories, in particular gender, class, and sexuality. White middle class men in Rio de Janeiro investigates what it means to be classified as a white person and a man in a society known for its valorization of racial mixing and yet deeply structured by racism, class and gender inequalities. Ribeiro Corossacz focuses on certain experiences in the men’s biographical trajectories representing moments of apprenticeship in a specific model of white, heterosexual and heteronormative middle-class masculinity and describes how these experiences are constructed as normative. This book explores how class, gender and race privilege are mutually produced and perceived by these men as “normal”. Examining instances of silence and what is left unsaid but also these men’s ability to provide precise descriptions of power relations and violent episodes, the author encourages us to observe the condition of dominant subjects as a keystone of the reproduction social discrimination

Reporting and narrating: Communication and storytelling in Carrión’s journalistic writing
In recent years, due to the rise of cultural productions through different media, an increase in the number of journalistic publications of hybrid texts has been observed, which results from the fusion of the narrative and informative functions. The spaces traditionally devoted to different types of journalistic texts which – apart from those merely informative, may include cultural-related and opinion articles – make possible the appearance of articles which distinguish themselves trough entailing both characteristics. Therefore, this paper analyses two articles written by J. Carrion and published in the Spanish edition of The New York Times in 2018. The articles will be scrutinised in relation to the narrative and essayistic works of the author. We illustrate some characteristics of what is generally referred to as narrative journalism, as defined by Herrscher (2012) and Casals Carro (2005), among others. This will allow us to trace a profile of the author, journalist and writer which is linked to the social environment and of his work

Marine Macroalgae Display Bioreductant Efficacy for Fabricating Metallic Nanoparticles: Intra/Extracellular Mechanism and Potential Biomedical Applications
The application of hazardous chemicals during nanoparticle (NP) synthesis has raised alarming concerns pertaining to their biocompatibility and equally to the environmental harmlessness. In the recent decade, nanotechnological research has made a gigantic shift in order to include the natural resources to produce biogenic NPs. Within this approach, researchers have utilized marine resources such as macroalgae and microalgae, land plants, bacteria, fungi, yeast, actinomycetes, and viruses to synthesize NPs. Marine macroalgae (brown, red, and green) are rich in polysaccharides including alginates, fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides (FCSPs), galactans, agars or carrageenans, semicrystalline cellulose, ulvans, and hemicelluloses. Phytochemicals are abundant in phenols, tannins, alkaloids, terpenoids, and vitamins. However, microorganisms have an abundance of active compounds ranging from sugar molecules, enzymes, canonical membrane proteins, reductase enzymes (NADH and NADPH), membrane proteins to many more. The prime reason for using the aforesaid entities in the metallic NPs synthesis is based on their intrinsic properties to act as bioreductants, having the capability to reduce and cap the metal ions into stabilized NPs. Several green NPs have been verified for their biocompatibility in human cells. Bioactive constituents from the above resources have been found on the green metallic NPs, which has demonstrated their efficacies as prospective antibiotics and anti-cancer agents against a range of human pathogens and cancer cells. Moreover, these NPs can be characterized for the size, shapes, functional groups, surface properties, porosity, hydrodynamic stability, and surface charge using different characterization techniques. The novelty and originality of this review is that we provide recent research compilations on green synthesis of NPs by marine macroalgae and other biological sources (plant, bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, yeast, and virus). Besides, we elaborated on the detailed intra- and extracellular mechanisms of NPs synthesis by marine macroalgae. The application of green NPs as anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, and popular methods of NPs characterization techniques has also been critically reviewed
Educazione linguistica e rappresentazioni della disabilità in famiglie migranti di origine bangladese. Risultati di un’indagine condotta nel territorio di Venezia.
n the present paper the author presents the main representations of language education and disability of Bangladeshi migrant families living in Venice. Moreover, the author presents how those representations could create problems in intercultural communication between migrant families and social operators. Data were collected during two focus groups realized together with the support of social workers of the Municipality of Venice during a research that started in October 2018 and ended in March 2020. Among the main findings, it is clear that families do not know which language use in the language education of their children. It is also necessary to employ intercultural and interlinguistic mediators in order to facilitate the communication between social-workers and migrant families. It is also necessary to take into consideration new different social educational and healthcare services in order to face the needs of families who live in a situation of marginalization and vulnerability, especially in families with children with disability
Between the end of dictatorship (1974) and the entry into the EEC (1986), Portugal starts a process of rethinking of its own past which, from a literary point of view, corresponds to a renewed attention to the author-narrator-character
relationship. Among the examples of metanarrative characters not yet considered by critics, the intervention will focus on O que diz Molero by Dinis Machado (1977) and Walt, or frio and o quente by Fernando Assis Pacheco (1978)
