This project documents on the one hand the great interest of the local department of German Studies in dramatic literature and cooperation with theatres or drama groups, in addition to its readiness in understanding dramatic literature across media. Setzwein’s Hrabal play is much more than a mere homage to one of the great storytellers in Czech literature. The tragicomical plot reflects the – despite concrete historical placement – timeless fate of a man whose life is initially made utterly worthless by the course of world history, but then receives meaning through an ironic twist under reversed omens: After years of spying on another man with meticulous pedantry and ambivalent emotions, the informer of a surveillance state becomes the ideal museum guide after the political revolution in 1989 for a Hrabal memorial under the banner of touristic commercialization, because he alone can give reliable and interesting account of the life and work of the author, who was rehabilitated in the meantime. Another important aspect of the play is in its poetological discourse about aesthetic principles and techniques of modern art. Not least because of this, we present the hitherto not published Bamberg poetological lecture of the author in the additional materials

Particles, fields, quanta: from quantum mechanics to the standard model of particle physics

    No full text
This book provides an introduction to the current state of our knowledge about the structure of matter. Gerhard Ecker describes the development of modern physics from the beginning of the quantum age to the standard model of particle physics, the fundamental theory of interactions of the microcosm. The focus lies on the most important discoveries and developments, e.g. of quantum field theory, gauge theories and the future of particle physics. The author also emphasizes the interplay between theory and experiment, which helps us to explore the deepest mysteries of nature. "Particles, Fields, Quanta" is written for everyone who enjoys physics. It offers high school graduates and students of physics in the first semesters an encouragement to understand physics more deeply. Teachers and others interested in physics will find useful insights into the world of particle physics. For advanced students, the book can serve as a comprehensive preparation for lectures on particle physics and quantum field theory. A brief outline of the mathematical structures, an index of persons with research focuses and a glossary for quick reference of important terms such as gauge theory, spin and symmetry complete the book. From the foreword by Michael Springer: “The great successes and the many open questions this book describes illustrate how immensely complicated nature is and nevertheless how much we already understand of it.” The author Gerhard Ecker studied theoretical physics with Walter Thirring at the University of Vienna. His research focus has been on theoretical particle physics, in particular during several long-term visits at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva. In 1986 he was promoted to Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna. Since 1977 he has given both basic lectures in theoretical physics and advanced courses on different topics in particle physics, e.g., quantum field theory, symmetry groups in particle physics and renormalisation in quantum field theory

The training ground (Campus) of the legio X Fretensis in Jerusalem/Aelia Capitolina - a possible identification north of the Damascus Gate

This paper suggests to locate the training ground (campus) of the legio X Fretensis in the shallow valley north of the Damascus Gate, perhaps where once the siege camp of Titus was built. Topographically it is the most level ground around Jerusalem, hence fitting for a campus. Furthermore, the area was devoid of structures between 70 CE and the 4th century, except for two monuments erected by legionary forces and dedicated to the emperors: one monument definitely dedicated to Hadrian (upon his visit) and the other either to Hadrian or less likely to Antoninus Pius. Positioning the campus in this area neatly explains why it was empty for centuries and why the cemetery of Aelia Capitolina was pushed north of the line of the “Third Wall”

The Koinon of Kosadar:A Hellenistic private association in the Levant

A late third- or early second-century BCE ostracon discovered within the fills of a subterranean complex (no. 169) at the site of Maresha records the koinon (association) of Kosadar ning a certain person called Rhodon for the sum of no less than 40 silver Drachmae. The ostracon was discovered in the company of two other similar, albeit fragmentary, ostraca. Since the association is named by a personal name, we suggest it was a private association. Though the existence of nes is well recorded in regulations of private associations known from the Hellenistic world on stone and papyri, these are the rst documents to be discovered that record the actual imposition of one. Furthermore, this is the earliest evidence for a private association in the Southern Levant, and as such constitutes a ‘missing link’ in the development of Greek-type institutions in the region

This is an 8½ x 11 paperbound book with detachable pages based upon seven stories, three of which are FG (34), LM (39), and TH (44). The same author works here who will work on the same publisher's Literature Activities for Young Children (1990). For each of these fables there is a special activity: making a pull-tab book for FG and for TH and making an accordion book for LM. In addition there are writing suggestions for subjects covered in each fable. Strangely, the stories themselves are never told in these pages! The illustrations are appropriately simple. The best of them may be the energetic fox on 36.Written by Dianna Sulliva

    Afzettingen in leidingen

Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Uwięziony mason, Natan mędrzec i Inkowie, czyli rzecz o sztuce pewnego niemieckiego barona w kontekście oświeceniowej idei tolerancji

The work created by Hans Heinrich Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen is an apology of Free- masonry – which made quite a contribution to the propagation of the Enlightenment – and the philosophy it advocated. The German aristocrat and Freemason introduces a noble, yet imprisoned Freemason, whose attitude and statements undermine any accusation levelled against the representatives of the royal art. He also speaks with regard to the internal conflict between them and, drawing on Marmontel’s “Les Incas” – which were very popular at the time – makes his piece a manifesto of the Enlightenment idea of tolerance. This paper discusses the drama entitled “Le franc-maçon prisonnier”, whose French-language version written by Hans Heinrich Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen was published in 1777, (the longer German version, i.e. Der Freymaurer im Gefängnis, signed Hans Karl Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen followed a year later), in the context of the Enlightenment concept of tolerance, and the Freemasonic and literary activity of the brothers (co-authors, or the author and the translator of the work). The issues relating to the piece and the literary work of the von Ecker und Eckhoffens has not been previously addressed in any publications in Polish
