Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Promoting Sustainable Development through Intangible Cultural Heritage::the Co-creation of Heritage-Sensitive Intellectual Property and Marketing Strategies (HIPAMS) With Bearer Communities
No full textCurrent academic theories and sustainable development planning provide little practical guidance to ICH communities on how to ensure that commercialisation of heritage-based market offerings supports heritage safeguarding and results in sustainable development. Work in this area has so far mostly focused on the dangers of over-commercialisation and the risks of de-contextualization, distracting from a more comprehensive investigation of ways to maintain and transmit heritage skills and knowledge while supporting sustainable economic development. The HIPAMS India project, funded by a three-year British Academy grant (2018-2021), aimed to help such communities by co-creating heritage-sensitive intellectual property and marketing strategies, or HIPAMS. This chapter sets out some theoretical and practical insights from our work on HIPAMS by explaining the HIPAMS process, highlighting the importance of community involvement in the co-creation of heritage-sensitive intellectual property and marketing strategies, and discussing key elements in its conceptual model. We suggest that planning heritage-sensitive commercialisation, i.e. commercialisation that supports heritage safeguarding, requires paying attention to questions of community engagement and empowerment, maintaining the heritage skills repertoire and keeping the tradition alive through heritage-sensitive innovation, and supporting or enhancing the reputation of the products or services in the marketplace. Experiences of co-creating and implementing HIPAMS suggest that such strategies can help to empower artist communities and promote sustainable incomes while reaffirming the value of their heritage both within and outside their communities
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Managing controversial heritage through education. Experience at a site of perpetrators
No full textThis essay frames sites of perpetrators as a controversial heritage and explores the approaches taken to manage this class of heritage through education, proposing considerations from the analysis of the educational programme conceived and implemented at the Museum of Secret Surveillance “House of Leaves” in Tirana, which is housed in one of the former offices of the Albanian communist regime’s State Security. Beginning with a review of the scholarly literature on controversial heritage, sites of perpetration and education in memorial museums, the research proceeds with a methodology that combines the analysis of educational materials and interviews with museum staff and collaborators in educational activities. The research identifies the potential and shortcomings of two key approaches to managing controversial heritage through education: embracing multivocality through witness testimonies and fostering critical thinking through personal engagement. The paper concludes pointing to the distinction between education at sites of perpetrators and education on perpetrators, and to underexplored educational opportunities.

Partendo da una rassegna della letteratura scientifica sul patrimonio controverso e sull'educazione nei musei commemorativi, la ricerca procede con una metodologia che combina l'analisi dei materiali didattici e quattro interviste con il personale del museo e i collaboratori delle attività educative. La ricerca identifica il potenziale e le carenze di due approcci alla gestione del patrimonio controverso attraverso l’educazione: favorire la multivocalità attraverso l'uso di testimonianze e promuovere il pensiero critico attraverso il coinvolgimento personale. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Co-developing Heritage-Sensitive Intellectual Property and Marketing Strategies with Bearer Communities:the Case of Bengal Patachitra
No full textPatachitra, a form of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in West Bengal, India, is practised by artist communities known as ‘Patuas’, who paint a story on a sari-backed paper scroll and perform the story through songs called ‘pater gaan’ to entertain and educate local people. Today, in Naya village, Pingla Block at Paschim Medinipur, Patuas offer singing-storytelling performances, and sell the scrolls and other products to a wide range of customers. Funded by a three-year British Academy grant (2018-2021), Patuas worked alongside an Indian NGO Contact Base (trading as Banglanatak dot com), and an academic team based in Europe to co-create heritage-sensitive intellectual property and marketing strategies, or HIPAMS.Building on the explanation of the conceptual model behind the HIPAMS process earlier in this book, the paper discusses the co-creation of HIPAMS in Naya with the community of artists and the short-term outcomes of implementing them
