Adolescent perspectives : genetic counselling, identity development, psychological adaptation, ableism, and peer attitudes in the context of a genetic condition
The provision of genetic counselling to adolescents with genetic conditions is inherently complex yet has not been a prominent research focus. In this thesis, I aimed to develop a program of research that supports the needs of adolescents with genetic conditions. I hypothesized that an improved understanding of adolescents lived and living experiences would facilitate the development of interventions that enhance available services.
In the first study, I described the empirical findings that represent the genetic counselling field’s understanding of adolescents with genetic conditions. This was achieved by conducting a scoping review which found that most studies assessed adolescents’ knowledge of their genetic condition and communication of genetic risk information; less emphasis was placed on adaptation and lived experiences. This review demonstrated that a systematic reconsideration of the genetic counselling process is needed for adolescents with a genetic condition.
For the second study, I evaluated how a genetic condition influences adolescents’ lives and how this knowledge can be used to improve healthcare interventions. Using a mixed methods approach, I developed a conceptual model which describes the complex identity journeys adolescents’ can take to integrate their genetic conditions into their self-construal and social identities. I also demonstrated how measures of psychological adaptation and illness identity may be useful to assess the state of genetic and disability identity development and determine the need for intervention, especially as it relates to navigating a society that is hampered by ableism.
In the final study, I evaluated the influence of ableism on the lived and living experiences of adolescents with genetic conditions. This was achieved indirectly, by investigating the perceptions of typically developing adolescents towards their peers with genetic conditions in a mixed methods analysis. I demonstrated that opportunities for social and personal interactions in conjunction with improved genetics/genomics literacy may prove to be a useful intervention to address social biases towards their peers with genetic conditions.
These findings underscore the need for healthcare providers, genetic counsellors, educators, and other interested parties to consider ways in which services can be enhanced to address the challenges adolescents may experience in navigating a genetic condition.Medicine, Faculty ofMedical Genetics, Department ofGraduat
Cantovivências pretas: estética e reconhecimento em Amina de Tasha e Tracie
This article aims to highlight the rap as a musical genre that origineted in the streets and peripheral neighborhoods, characterized by its strong social engagement and by its potential as a mechanism for recognition and identification among Black and marginalized women. This will be carried out through the use and analysis of the song Amina by the duo Tasha and Tracie and the understanding of the rap musical style as an aesthetic experience, which can promote the “distribution of the sensible” and a communication composed of “Aisthesis” – concepts derived from the Reception Aesthetics Theory. To this end, we use as theoretical frameworks Evaristo (2020) based on the author's concept of Escrevivência; Martín-Barbero (2009), renowned in the field of Latin American communication studies and the mediation theory; Teperman (2015), author and researcher on the rap musical genre; and finally, Barros (2017), for the analyses conducted within the scope of communication and aesthetic experience. Regarding the theoretical-methodological framework, a combination was adopted of French Discourse Analysis for the interpretation of the song Amina (2025), the paradigm of mediations proposed by Martín-Barbero – widely present in Latin American cultural studies – and the articulations between communication and aesthetic experience, grounded in hermeneutics.
Fantasy genre: the project of “The Irregular Popadantsy” series by Tasha Tanari
This master’s project aims at developing a novel series “The Irregular Popadantsy” in the fantasy genre, published by the author of the project under the pseudonym Tasha Tanari. Within creating the project, the theoretical concepts of “mass literature” and “verbal art” are taken into account, based on the works of scientists engaged in the study of the phenomenon of mass culture. One more key idea is the diversity of the fantasy genre and its genre-specific features. The result of the project: the novel “Popadanets on the Contrary, or an Elf in Action” published in 2023; the novel “Popadanka with a Residence Permit, or Elven Holidays” prepared for publication; long-term plans for the continuation of the series of novels “The Irregular Popadantsy”
Ntuism: how Toni Morrison reconnects us to ancestral Africa in beloved, 2005
This study examines Toni Morrison's use of specific Africanisms in Beloved. The term Ntu indicates a particular ethos that can be categorized and applied to a reading of this diasporic novel. Morrison uses Ntuism to invoke the names of those Africans lost as a result of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This study initiated from two epigraphs at the novel's beginning: 'sixty million and more and a biblical quote, 'I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. The epigraphs led to the work of historian Jahnheiz Jahn, who studied, Kagame, Ogotommli and Tempels in the early 1960s. All four historians expounded and systematized the philosophy of the Bantu, the Ruandese, and the Dogon. While their work is not exhaustive, it is comprehensive in that it considers cultures from different areas of Africa and focuses on outstanding commonalities. From those commonalities comes the term Ntu, which is used herein to indicate significant African cosmological tropes. This study applies Ntu as a theoretical tool supporting my assertion that Beloved should be read as an Africanist novel in order to fully appreciate its depth, complexity and weight within the Anerican literary canon
The Boy Next Door
The Boy Next Door tells the story of two best friends-turned-lovers. Jason and Tasha had been childhood friends, and they remained so for many years. Jason was the nerd, while Tasha was the hot and clueless teenager. However, Tasha has always been able to count on Jason. When the time for college comes, these friends go their separate ways, then reconnect later in New York. Now, Tasha finds herself single at 32 with a desire to settle down but incapable of finding the right person. She had never considered anything romantic could happen between herself and Jason, having retired him in the friend zone and seeing him as a brother. It takes Jason to declare his love for her to jump-start the love story.
This book was chosen for the collection because of how it represents disability, and it delivered. Jason is paraplegic, but the author handles this subject well. The hero is portrayed as smart, sexy, and adorable, dealing with his disability with humor and grace. Also, the author tastefully deals with his disability. This book was so much fun because of Tasha’s humorous narration. She also grows so much as a character from a shallow and reckless teen to an intelligent and likable person.https://ecommons.udayton.edu/ul_popularromance/1070/thumbnail.jp
