Criteria for entropic curvature on graph spaces

    No full text
62 pages, 2 figuresThis paper presents local criteria for lower bounds on entropic curvature of graph spaces along Schr\"odinger bridges at zero temperature, according to the definition given by the second named author in [31], in the continuity of the work by C. L\'eonard [19] inspired by the Lott-Sturm-Villani theory. A graph space is defined as a quadruple (X,d,L,m)(\mathcal{X},d,L,m) where X\mathcal{X} is the set of vertices, dd is the combinatorial distance and mm is a reversible reference measure with respect to a generator LL of a Markov semi-group on X\mathcal{X}. The criteria are given by local optimization problems on balls of radius two, depending only on the generator LL and on the discrete structure of these balls. General tensorization properties of the criteria are presented for the study of the Cartesian product of graphs. This approach is robust since it applies to a wide range of graph spaces and also for any measure mm, including measures with interaction potential like Ising models. We introduce a very large class of structured graphs, for which the local criteria give non-negative entropic curvature for the uniform measure. A Bonnet-Myers type of theorem also ensures that any such graph with positive entropic curvature is finite. On any graph space, positive entropic curvature provides transport-entropy inequalities with so-called weak optimal transport costs, as well as Poincar\'e or modified log-Sobolev inequalities for the renormalized probability measure μ=m/m(X)\mu = m/m(\mathcal{X}). These inequalities are related to refined concentration properties of the measure μ\mu, speed of convergence of semi-groups to the measure μ\mu. We also present examples of graphs with negative curvature. Some comparisons of our results with other notions of curvature are established, such as Bakry-Emery curvature conditions [7,8], Ollivier or Lin-Lu-Yau's curvature [28,20]

    No full text
This dataset is composed of pages and entries extracted from French directories published between 1798 and 1861. The purpose of this dataset is to evaluate the performance of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Named Entity Recognition (NER) on 19th century French documents. This dataset is divided into two parts: A labeled dataset, which contains 8765 manually corrected entries from 78 pages (18 different directories), and which is designed for supervised training. An unlabeled dataset, containing 1058196 raw entries from 6887 pages (13 different directories), and which is designed for self-supervised pre-training. For the labeled dataset, we provide: Original pages and cropped images Human-corrected positions, transcriptions and entity tagging for each entry OCR prediction from 3 systems (Tesseract v4, PERO OCR v2020 and Kraken) Projected NER reference from clean text to OCR predictions, making it suitable to evaluate the performance of NER systems on real, noisy OCR predictions For the unlabeled dataset, we provide: Automatically detected positions for each entry (lot of noise) OCR predictions for each entry (PERO OCR engine) How to cite this dataset Please cite this dataset as: N. Young-onset; Biliary tract cancers; CholangiocarcinomaInici precoç; Càncers de les vies biliars; ColangiocarcinomaInicio joven; Cánceres de las vías biliares; ColangiocarcinomaBackground & aims: The incidence of biliary tract cancers (BTC) among young individuals (≤50 years) is currently rising. We aimed to investigate the clinical, therapeutic and molecular characteristics and outcomes of young-onset BTC (YO-BTC). Methods: Patients with histologically confirmed BTC treated at Gustave Roussy (France) and Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (Spain) were categorized as YO-BTC (≤50 years old), average-onset (AO-BTC; 51-69 years old), and late-onset (LO-BTC; ≥70 years old). The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). The secondary endpoint was the growth modulation index (GMI), e.g., the ratio of progression-free survival (PFS) with the targeted therapy line to the PFS of the n-1 line. Results: Among 1,023 patients with BTC, 184 (18%) had YO-BTC, 561 (54.8%) had AO-BTC, and 278 (27.2%) had LO-BTC. Median OS in metastatic patients was longer in the YO group (22 months; 95% CI 18-26) than in the AO group (18 months; 95% CI 17-20; p = 0.010) or LO group (15 months; 95% CI 13-17; p 1.33 was more frequent in YO-BTC (61.1%, 39.2%, and 33.3% for YO, AO, and LO; p = 0.044), although no differences in PFS or OS were observed. Conclusion: Patients with YO-BTC have improved outcomes in the metastatic setting. The YO-BTC group is enriched for FGFR2 fusions, highlighting opportunities for precision oncology-based approaches. Impact and implications: The study underscores the scientific justification for investigating age-related differences in biliary tract cancers, revealing that patients with young-onset biliary tract cancer have improved survival outcomes and a higher prevalence of actionable molecular alterations, particularly FGFR2 fusions. Physicians can apply these results by incorporating molecular profiling and targeted therapies earlier in the treatment plan for younger patients, potentially improving their prognosis and quality of life. However, it is crucial to consider the study's limitations, such as the retrospective design and potential selection bias, to avoid overgeneralization and ensure appropriate application of the findings in clinical practice and future research. This research project was supported by ESMO with the aid of a grant from BMS. Politeness in Diplomatic Talk: A Thai Case Study

    No full text
This research starts from the assumption that there are goal-oriented politeness strategies in diplomatic talk. The case study analyses Thai-foreign diplomatic events during Thailand’s national crisis, the massive demonstrations across the country in the years of 2009-2011, in which the colours of the protesters’ clothing signified divergent political allegiances (so-called “colorized politics”). The research aims are threefold: firstly, to characterise politeness strategies in the Thai-foreign diplomatic talks conducted in English; secondly, to examine the extent to which culture-specific values inform the conversational performance of Thai speakers; and thirdly, to explore potential causes of misunderstandings arising from cross-cultural mismatches which occur during these social interactions. The research data are real-time conversations in courtesy calls and international meetings between foreign diplomatic representatives and the leaders of the Thai state and government agencies. My study is influenced by Brown and evinson’s theory along with intercultural communication theories for analysing the ethnographically observed talk-in-action events and transcribed conversational discourse. The research frames a conclusive argument that the diplomatic speakers use both conventional politeness and unconventional politeness strategies. The latter includes what I term ‘lexical politeness’, ‘interactive politeness’, and ‘intercultural politeness’. The Thai party’s politeness strategies in pursuit of diplomatic goals carry an implication of Thai cultural values, specifically: fun-orientation, interdependence, and non-confrontation. Potential pragmatic failures in Thai cultural-oriented politeness are intimacy and directness. The research reveals the suppositions and entailments of English utterances by non-native speakers (Thais) and develops linguistic politeness strategies from the evidence of the diplomatic conversations

O primeiro capítulo apresenta as narrativas do séc.

The German Occupation in recent French fiction : an analysis of the literary “mode retro”

    No full text
This thesis attempts to analyse and characterise the mode rétro, the remarkable renewal of interest in the German Occupation of France, which is coloured by an extensive re-evaluation of the period's significance. An introduction places this fashion in its literary, social and historical context, revealing how, from 1940 to 1969, a collective and predominantly Gaullist 'myth' of the Resistance became established, with the result that the national response to invasion was accepted to be one of wide-spread heroism and revolt. Part I studies the reaction to such résistancialisme, showing how this orthodox interpretation of events was undermined and, for many, discredited, and offering explanations of the timing and direction of the new view. Part II focuses on the fiction, memoirs, autobiographies and biographies of the younger authors, those who have no direct adult experience of the années noires. It is suggested that their obvious obsession with absent parent-figures reflects their awareness that the past has been misrepresented and their heritage rendered problematic. Their sole means of escape from this predicament, their only source of emotional relief is seen to lie in the creation of a personal account of the early 1940s running contrary to the prevalent orthodoxy, the fabrication of a 'counter-myth'. It is thus the notion of myth which links the various sections of the survey, and so gives the thesis its overall unity

Truth and untruth: Louis-Ferdinand Céline's Voyage au bout de la nuit and the memory of the Great War 1914-1918

    Get PDF
This thesis examines Louis-Ferdinand Celine’s 1932 novel Voyage au bout de la nuit as a rewriting of his memory of the Great War 1914-1918. It seeks to resolve the truth problematic posed by the inversion in Voyage au bout de la nuit of Celine’s experience in the war, primarily the transition from Celine’s heroism in the war to his fictional self-portrait as the coward, Bardamu. It seeks to clarify the role and value of Celine’s fictional witness to war by placing the novel in a broadly developed context of the war and its commemoration. A major premise of this thesis is that Celine was traumatised by the war and that his rewriting of his war experience is informed by his need to break free of traumatised memory through the creation of a new, literary narrative of his personal past. By drawing on the literature of trauma and survival, as well as on studies of the Great War and other wars, this thesis succeeds in establishing that Celine was, indeed, traumatised by his war experience and succeeds in showing the many ways in which this trauma shapes Voyage. It also provides a thorough account of how Voyage as literary artefact engages with the memory of the Great War and how it functions as witness to war and the consequence of war. It brings us ultimately towards the dynamic of accusation which lies at the heart of Celine’s traumatic memory of the Great War and which underlies its keynotes of irony, satire and invective. This thesis is multi-disciplinary in its approach, drawing on historical, biographical, psychological, and literary studies. It provides an important contribution to Celine studies, but also to studies of the Great War, the memory and literature of the Great War and to studies of twentieth-century trauma, memory and identity

'One equal music’: The royal college of music, its inception and the legacy of Sir George Grove 1883-1895

    Get PDF
The establishment of the Royal College of Music (RCM) in 1883 represents the denouement of an eighteenth-century movement to found a conservatoire with a national remit in Britain. Whether motivated by the desire to rival Continental conservatoires to generate and develop an environment in which a worthy successor to Purcell could be nurtured or to create an indigenous musical workforce to obtain direct control of market forces, the RCM was seen as a panacea in the light of the demise of the experimental National Training School for Music (1876-1882) and the ineffectual Royal Academy of Music founded in 1822. The NTSM's financial concerns led Sir Henry Cole to approach the Royal Commission of 1851 for aid. In return for a meagre grant, the Commission insisted the NTSM remodel its management and constitution on pain of eviction from buildings on the Kensington Estate. Cole's approach to 1851 Commissionets precipitated the involvement of the Prince of Wales and other senior members of the Court that led directly to the establishment of the RCM in 1878.Attempts to institute the RCM as a quango to regulate the music profession alongside music education both at elementary school and university level were intended to provide ideal circumstances for inducing comprehensive treasury assistance where the NTSM failed. When this proved elusive, a contingency was provided by George Grove (first RCM Director from 1882) who, at the request of the Prince of Wales, imtiated a capital fund. The introduction of fee-paying students alongside scholars provided financial security that distanced the College & insolvency. Substantial growth in numbers during the first few years forced Grove and the Council to address the issue of a new building. Grove's appointment of an unrivalled professorial staff and the development of a rigorous curriculum, whose inspiration was to be found within the Continental traditions in France and Germany, had paid dividends. By 1894, the results of RCM's pedagogical methods were respected across Europe. The appointment of Grove's neighbour, Alexander Mackenzie, as Principal of the RAM heralded an environment for mutual co-operation between two rival institutions. The institution of local examinations under the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music from 1889 marked the conclusion of further attempts to amalgamate the two institutions. The foundation of both the Associated Board was intended to provide a remedy to the shortage of suitably-qualified candidates entering for scholarships and to improve music tuition among school children as set out in the RCM's 1883 charter. The coalition created formidable opposition to Halle's proposal to establish a chartered Royal College of Music in Manchester (RMCM) in 1893 and Parliament's attempts to include music within the provision of the bill for the regulation and registration of teachers. The foundation of the Associated Board allowed Grove to begin implementing the RCM's remit to lead the music profession on both a national and imperial scale. The RCM's national and European reputation established by Grove was consolidated under the directorate of his successor, c. Hubert H. Parry, who confirmed the RCM's global reputation to which other, fledgling institutions, such as New York's Juilliard School of Music, came to aspke. Grove's initiatives, which began the process of emancipating composer and performer alike, went on to transform Britain's international musical reputation within a generation, the ramifications of which continue to affect us more than a century later
