Nyskapende radioestetikk og pragmatisk leilighetsarbeid - hørespillsjangeren i Inger Hagerups verk

This article focuses on a frequently neglected part of the Norwegian author Inger Hagerup’s (1905-1985) work: her occupation with the popular genre of radio play. Based upon Ernst Cassirer’s dynamic approach to formative cultural work and expressive meaning, the article investigates two of Hagerup’s works produced for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK): Firstly her own radioplay Hilsen fra Katarina (1949), secondly her translation of Ingeborg Bachmann’s Der gute Gott von Manhattan (1957). Through a juxtaposition of the two, Hagerup’s own radio play stands out as an innovative contribution to the particular Norwegian development of this genre, and as a modern, far more experimental, work than her poems from the same period. Her translation of Bachmann’s work appears as surprisingly reductive with respect to the complexity of Bachmann’s original text. The article points out how the translation of Bachmann’s play to a Norwegian context can also be viewed as a cultural transfer highlighting different ideas of a popular genre during the first decades after World War II.publishedVersionOpphavsrett 2012 Ingvild Folkvord. Diabetes mellitus – analyser av genvarianter assosiert med subtyper av Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY)

    No full text

In this thesis, I have conducted an analysis of the short story “Vi kan ikke hjelpe alle”, published by Ingvild H. Rishøi in 2014. I focus on how the author uses realism as a literary device, and the effect of this realism. Furthermore, I research whether the short story is classical in its form and content, or if Rishøi revitalizes the genre in any way. Annemette Hejlsted’s analysis form for short stories has formed the method for the analysis. The most important findings are that the level of detail and realism in this short story, incorporates the reader into the fictional universe, which in extension makes it easier for the reader to feel sympathy for the characters and their story. In my analysis, Rishøi is compared to Amalie Skram, who uses her realism to create a universe which encompasses the struggles and discomfort of the real world. I classify Rishøi as a neorealistic short story author, due to her modern content, realistical way of writing and the lack of a life altering event. This analysis has given me an insight that Rishøi’s short stories could be used to help students become aware of the social differences in Norway

"Be prepared for bad news": Framing Terrorism in Norwegian News Media

Title: Be prepared for bad news : Framing Terrorism in Norwegian News Media Author: Ingvild Knævelsrud Rabe Supervisor: Sveinung Sandberg Place: Department of Criminology and the Sociology of Law: Faculty of Law, University of Oslo Submission date: 08.05.2015 How are acts of terrorism framed in Norwegian newspapers? This thesis seeks to answer this question in a comparative case study on the coverage of two terrorist attacks that took place in 2013. The case study is based on 1121 newspaper articles, eleven of which are closely analysed qualitatively and 150 directly cited and paraphrased. The two attacks studied are the attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya and the attack and hostage situation that took place at the gas facility Tigantourine in In Amenas, Algeria. Both resulted in many deaths, and both had a Norwegian connection; Five Norwegians were killed in In Amenas, and in Nairobi one of the attackers was a Norwegian citizen. My main research question is: How do Norwegian newspapers frame acts of terrorism? I have used framing theory in the analysis of the articles. It is a theoretical and methodological framework for analysing text and speech that has been developed and expanded by numerous scholars. Framing theory is concerned with the presentation of issues and how this may affect the recipients. Earlier research on framing theory and the media has proposed that one can use the predefined generic frames responsibility, conflict, human interest, economic consequences and morality to categorise newspaper articles and this thesis seeks to test this notion by trying to apply these on articles collected from Norwegian newspapers. The suggestion that certain news values such as proximity, personalisation and simplification has to be apparent for a story to be newsworthy will also be addressed. I found that the generic frames human interest and responsibility was by far the most used in the coverage of the attacks I have studied. The human interest frame is applicable when an article concentrates on a specific person or persons and/or when the focus of the Ingvild Knævelsrud Rabe VI article is on emotion. This frame is used extensively when it comes to the presentation of the victims and of acts of terrorism and to some degree when it comes to presentations of the perpetrators. The responsibility frame is used in articles focusing on the responsibility of the perpetrators. This frame is also applicable in articles concerning who is responsible for ending the attack and protecting the victims. However not every article can be classified as being framed by one or more of the generic frames. Some news values such as personalisation and proximity are easily detectable in the articles, the idea that the news value of violence and conflict is connected to a graphic presentation seems to be less true when the victims of such acts are close to the ones reporting on it. This thesis also explores how framing changes during the timeframe of the newspaper coverage. In the coverage of the In Amenas attack the human interest framed stories are spread throughout the whole timeframe demonstrating that the concern for the Norwegian hostages and victims was the most important focus from beginning to end. Responsibility-framed stories are also apparent throughout the coverage. In addition to the responsibility and human interest framed stories the beginning of the coverage also includes conflict-framed stories, the middle focuses on cooperation and the ending on economic consequences. The coverage of the Westgate attack is also characterised by a lot of human interest and responsibility stories, but the early coverage, as well as the coverage of the later developments also include a lot of conflict framed stories. The conflict frame is used to a much higher degree in the Westgate stories than the In Amenas stories. Lastly this thesis is concerned with the framing of the victims and perpetrators of these acts of terrorism. The coverage of the victims was mostly human interested framed and nationality played a huge part on the amount of attention the victims were given. The Norwegian victims were written about in a respectful way and the coverage of these victims was distinctly influenced by the impact their deaths had on the Norwegian society. There were, however, no Norwegians amongst those killed in Westgate, thus the stories about the dead were more sensationalised, and Norwegian survivors gained more attention than the victims. The division in representation due to nationality is also notable in the framing of the perpetrators. The stories on the Norwegian terrorist sought to explain why and how he became a terrorist to a much higher degree than the stories concerning the foreign terrorists

The Study of the Past and its Present Challenges in the Study of Religions

    No full text
The article comments on the three challenges, which Mattias Brand presents in the Introduction: the questioning of central concepts, multiplication and fragmentation, and communication with a large audience. It also comments on Nickolas P. Roubekas article, “Asking Old Questions Anew: On the History of Religions.” The author stresses the lack of stability in the concept of religion and that those definitions must be modified and refined. A realistic goal for historians of religion is to a higher degree to contribute to middle-range theories where theories and empirical research are more closely integrated. Since religions of the past make up a significant part of the religion/s that have ever existed, they are essential to include in a comparative study of religion. The author finally points out that successful theorising in the historical study of religion should include students.publishedVersio

Die Darstellung einer Fluchtgeschichte in Reinhard Kleists Graphic Novel Der Traum von Olympia

    No full text
The genre of Graphic Novels has become increasingly popular in the last few years as a literary medium through which serious societal issues are being presented to a reading audience, moving away from an identity as a primarily entertaining form directed mostly at young readers. In the German literary sciences specifically, Graphic Novels have been used to present a range of topics from (auto-) biographical stories of well-known people to stories dealing with migration, the country’s Nazi past as well as stories presenting the experiences of individuals who have been displaced from their home countries for different reasons. Such Graphic Novels have been found to meet with considerable positive reception among its readers. In this paper, the focus is on discussing and presenting how the literary Genre of Graphic Novels depict escape stories using Reinhard Kleist’s Der Traum von Olympia. Reinhard Kleist is a prolific German Comic author whose 2017 published Graphic Novel Der Traum von Olympia seem to have a struck a chord with its reading audience. Depicting the story of a Somalian refugee fleeing her home country, Kleist presents her escape story in Comic-format. This work aims to find out how the unique characteristics of the Graphic Novel Genre are harnessed to present a controversial and sensitive issue like Flight and Expulsion in a way that the topic is not reduced to just a cliché and that the reader gains an understanding of the topic beyond media reports. Using the narrative framework of Comics / Graphic Novels, this work will specifically examine how the Genre’s multimodal and semiotic resources contribute to explaining and depicting the issues around Flight to its audience. Furthermore, this work will be considered within the frameworks of Erll and Nünnings Conceptual Memory Theory, in an effort to discuss how Kleist’s Graphic Novel contributes to the memory of refugees in Europe’s cultural memory space

Exploring aspects of construct and criterion validity Norwegian Military Personality Inventory (NMPI)

    No full text
Every instrument used for selection purposes should be valid, reliable and practical. The aim of this study is to examine the construct and criterion validity of Norwegian Military Personality Inventory (NMPI), a personality test developed by the Norwegian Armed Forces (NAF). During the summer of 2016, 715 candidates attending the NAFs assessment center answered a questionnaire containing NMPI and NEO Personality Inventory. As a part of a larger research project, this study seeks to bring more insight to the psychometric properties of NMPI. Construct validity was analyzed by comparing the NMPI to NEO-PI, and criterion validity was examined by studying the relationship between the five personality factors from NMPI and objective measures of performance during the assessment center. These performance criteria were competence scores from interview and field, and the dichotomous granted admission after the assessment center. The author found support for the premise that the NMPI does measure the Big Five factors of personality. Findings were: 1. Extraversion and Conscientiousness (both NMPI) positively predicted admission. 2. Openness to Experience (NMPI) negatively predicted performance in both field and interview. 3. Extraversion (NMPI) predicted better performance in the both field and interview. However, the amount of variance explained by the factors were 7% or lower in the respective regression analyses. Further, the data appears to have suffered from restricted variation. The results are discussed in terms of the existing literature and implications for future use of the inventory, as well as future research are suggested
