    Amniotic Membrane and Mesenchymal Stem Cell Coalescence for Islet Transplantation in Experimental Diabetes in Rats

    Aims The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of islet cells and mesenchymal stem cells transferred together in the amniotic membrane (AM) in order to preserve the viability and functionality of islet cells on the success of islet transplantation in diabetes mellitus–induced rats. Methods A total of 80 male Wistar albino rats, aged 3.5–4 months, were included in this study. While 40 Wistar Albino rats were used for the process of islet cell isolation, 40 Wistar Albino rats were used to establish experimental groups. These rats were assigned to five experimental groups including eight rats in each. These groups were AM, amniotic membrane + mesenchymal stem cell (AM + MSC), amniotic membrane + islet cell (AM + IC), amniotic membrane + islet cell + mesenchymal stem cell (AM + IC + MSC), and sham groups. The study was concluded for 28 days. Results Although there was no significant difference between AM + IC and AM + IC + MSC groups in terms of mean blood glucose levels, both groups had statistically different values compared to the sham group. A significant difference was observed between the AM + IC and AM + IC + MSC groups in the c‐peptide levels before and after transplantation. Immunohistochemical staining illustrated the presence of insulin‐positive cells in both AM + IC and AM + IC + MSC groups. Moreover, BrDU (+) cells were determined in AM + IC and AM + IC + MSC groups using BrDU staining. Conclusion The study results indicated that transplanting islet cells into the omentum by being packaged in AM preserved their viability and function, leading to significant effects on blood glucose and c‐peptide levels

    Bu çalışmanın amacı yavru ve yetişkin Kangal köpeklerine ait bazı parametrelerin ortaya konulmasıdır.Çalışmada 25 yavru, 25 yetişkin olmak üzere toplam 50 tane Kangal köpeği kullanıldı.Yaşlarına göre hayvanlar birinci grup (1-3 aylık, 17 yavru), ikinci grup (4-7 aylık, 8 yavru) ve yetişkin (18 ay-5 yaş, 25 hayvan) olmak üzere üç gruba ayrıldı. Bipolar ekstremite derivasyonları (I, II, III), unipolar ekstremite derivasyonları (aVR, aVL, aVF) ve unipolar göğüs derivasyonlarını (CV6LL, CV6LU, V10) kaydetmek için elektrotlar uygun yerlere konuldu. Hayvanlar çiftlik ortamında sağ yan taraflarına yatırılarak elektrokardiyogramları alındı. Her bir hayvan için II derivasyonda P dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü, Q ve R dalgalarının amplitüdü ve QRS kompleksi süresi, T dalgasının amplitüt ve süresi ile PR, QT, ST aralıklarının süreleri, kalp atım sayısı ve elektriksel eksen hesaplandı. Ayrıca tüm derivasyonlarda P ve T dalgası ile QRS kompleksinin konfigürasyonu incelendi.Yavru Kangal köpeklerinin 1-3 aylık olanlarını içeren birinci grupta hayvanların tümünde sinüs ritmi gözlenirken, ortalama dakika kalp atım sayısı; 169,82±6,33, P dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü; 0,028± 0,002 s, 0,14±0,01 mV, QRS kompleksinin süresi ile R ve Q dalgalarının amplitüdleri; 0,04±0,002 s, 1,26±0,13 mV, 0,42±0,05 mV, T dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü; 0,05±0,003 s, 0,22±003 mV, PR, QT, ST aralıkları sırasıyla; 0,10±0,003 s, 0,16±0,004 s, 0,12±0,004 s, ortalama elektriksel eksen 77,41º±3,99 olarak hesaplandı. İkinci grupta bulunan 4-7 aylık yavrularda da sinüs ritmi gözlenirken, ortalama dakika kalp atım sayısı; 125,75±3,87, P dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü 0,035±0,002 s, 0,18±0,02 mV, QRS kompleksinin süresi ile R ve Q dalgalarının amplitüdleri; 0,04±0,004 s, 1,45±0,20 mV, 0,42±0,08 mV, T dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü; 0,06±0,01 s, 0,19±0,03 mV, PR, QT ve ST aralıkları sırasıyla 0,12±0,004 s, 0,21±0,007 s, 0,15±0,01 s, ortalama elektriksel eksen; 69,88º±9,77 olarak hesaplandı. Erişkin hayvanların bulunduğu grupta 20 hayvanda sinüs aritmi, 5 hayvanda sinüs ritmi gözlenirken, ortalama dakika kalp atım sayısı 116,20±2,88, P dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü 0,040±0,001 s, 0,18±0,07 mV, QRS kompleksinin süresi ile R ve Q dalgalarının amplitüdleri; 0,05±0,002 s, 1,65±0,08 mV, 0,27±0,03 mV, T dalgasının süre ve amplitüdü; 0,05±0,003 s, 0,31±0,03 mV, PR, QT ve ST aralıkları sırasıyla 0,12±0,003 s, 0,20±0,011 s, 0,14±0,002 s, ortalama elektriksel eksen 79,52º±2,80 olarak hesaplandı.Tüm hayvanlarda P dalgasının genellikle II, aVF ve CV6LL derivasyonlarında pozitif, aVR derivasyonunda negatif yönde olduğu gözlendi. Yavrularda trifazik ve difazik QRS morfolojilerinin yüzdeleri birbirine eşitken yetişkinlerde daha çok difazik morfoloji görüldüğü saptandı. Yaşla birlikte negatif T dalgası oranının arttığı belirlendi. Yaş grupları arasında, P dalgasının süresi, Q ve R dalgasının amplitüdü, PR, QT, ST aralıkları süreleri ve kalp atım sayıları arasında istatistiksel olarak fark bulundu (p<0,05).Sonuç olarak, yaşla birlikte P dalgası süresinin uzadığı, Q dalgası amplitüdünün azaldığı, R dalgası amplitüdünün arttığı, kalp atım sayısı azalırken PR, QT ve ST aralıklarının uzadığı belirlendi. AbstractThe purpose of this study is to demonstrate some parameters of adult and pup Kangal dogs.A total of 50 Kangal dogs, 25 pups and 25 adults, were used in the study.The animals were divided into three groups by their ages: first group (1-3 months, 17 pups), second group (4-7 months, 8 pups) and adults (18 months-5 years, 25 animals). Electrodes placed at appropriate locations to record bipolar extremity derivations (I, II, III), unipolar extremity derivations (aVR, aVL, aVF) and unipolar chest derivations (CV6LL, CV6LU, V10). Electrodes were removed by laying the dogs to their right lateral recumbency in the farm environment. Duration and amplitude of the P wave, amplitude of Q and R waves and duration of QRS complex, duration and amplitude of T wave, duration of PR, QT, ST intervals, heart rate in the II derivation and electrical axis were calculated for each animal. Configuration of the P and T waves and QRS complex was also studied.In the first group of Kangal dogs including pups of 1-3 months of age, sinus rhythm was observed in all animals, mean heart rate was 169,82±6,33 beats per minute, duration and amplitude of the P wave were 0,028± 0,002 s, 0,14±0,01 mV, duration of QRS complex and amplitude of the R and Q waves were 0,04±0,002 s, 1,26±0,13 mV, 0,42±0,05 mV, duration and amplitude of the T wave 0,05±0,003 s, 0,22±003 mV and PR, QT, ST intervals were 0,10±0,003 s, 0,16±0,004 s, 0,12±0,004 s respectively and mean electrical axis was 77,41º±3,99. In the second group including pups of 4-7 months of age, sinus rhythm was also observed in these animals, and the mean heart rate was 125,75±3,87 beats per minute, duration and amplitude of the P wave were 0,035±0,002 s, 0,18±0,02, duration of QRS complex and amplitude of the R and Q waves were 0,04±0,004 s, 1,45±0,20 mV, 0,42±0,08 mV, duration and amplitude of the T wave 0,06±0,01 s, 0,19±0,03 mV and PR, QT and ST intervals were 0,12±0,004 s, 0,21±0,007 s, 0,15±0,01 s respectively and mean electrical axis was 69,88º±9,77. In the group including adult animals, sinus arrhythmia was observed in 20 and sinus rhythm in 5, and the mean heart rate was 116,20±2,88 beats per minute, duration and amplitude of the P wave were 0,040±0,001 s, 0,18±0,07 mV, duration of QRS complex and amplitude of the R and Q waves were 0,05±0,002 s, 1,65±0,08 mV, 0,27±0,03 mV, duration and amplitude of the T wave 0,05±0,003 s, 0,31±0,03 mV and PR, QT and ST intervals were 0,12±0,003 s, 0,20±0,011 s, 0,14±0,002 s respectively and mean electrical axis was calculated as 79,52º±2,80.P wave in all animals was generally positive in II, aVF and CV6LL derivations and negative in aVR derivation. While percentages and triphasic and biphasic QRS morphologies were similar in pups, diphasic morphology was more common in adults. Frequency of negative T wave increased with increasing age. Statistically significant differences were identified among groups in terms duration of the P wave, amplitude of Q and R waves, duration of PR, QT, ST intervals and heart rate (p<0,05).In conclusion, the study showed that the duration of the P wave shortened, amplitude of the Q wave decreased, amplitude of the R wave increased and heart rate decreased whereas PR, QT and ST intervals prolonged with increasing age

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Some Electrocardiographic Parameters of the Kangal Dogs

    The purpose of this study is to demonstrate some electrocardiographic parameters of adult and puppies of Kangal dogs. A total of 50 Kangal dogs, 25 pups and 25 adults were used in the study. Bipolar extremity leads, unipolar extremity leads and unipolar chest leads were recorded in dogs. Duration and amplitude of the p-wave, amplitude of Q and R waves and duration of QRS complex, duration and amplitude of T wave, duration of PR and QT intervals, heart rate in the lead II and electrical axis were calculated for each animal. Configuration of the P and T waves and QRS complex was also studied. Significant differences were identified among groups in terms of duration of the p-wave, amplitude of Q and R waves, duration of PR, QT intervals and heart rate (p<0.05)

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
