Warships are valuable combat assets that host numerous weapon systems. These warfare elements have many active and passive systems to protect them from enemy weapons. Infrared guided missiles are one of the most important weapons threatening warships. Infraredguided missiles are among the most important threats to warships. Various infrared signature suppression systems are used with the purpose of reducing or delaying the detectability of the ship by infrared-guided surface missiles. The infrared signature of ships is mainly caused by high-temperature exhaust gases. To reduce the infrared signature of ships, it is necessary to lower the temperatures of the exhaust gases released into the atmosphere from the ship. Active and passive systems are used to reduce exhaust gases. In this study, systems classified as passive to reduce the temperature of exhaust gas are discussed. In the experimental study mentioned in the literature regarding exhaust gas temperature reduction systems, the performance of the passive system, the ejector-diffuser system, was investigated.. The experimental study was compared with the values calculated with the help of simulation techniques developed with today's computer technology. ANSYS commercial software was used in the study. As a result of the study, it was seen that the difference between the experimental study and the simulation solution in the literature is about 8%. For this reason, it is seen that the experimental study and simulation results are in harmony and acceptable

    No full text
Proxemics and speech acts play an important role in nonverbal communication. Thus, this case study aimed to compare university students’ perceptions on proxemic behaviours in terms of three speech acts, namely apologising, thanking and congratulating. There were 60 participants in total. 30 were Turkish students from English Language Teaching (ELT) Department and 30 were foreign students learning Turkish at a state university’s Turkish Language Learning, Research and Application Centre. The data were collected via a semi-structured interview and analysed through summative content analysis. According to the results, various individual, socio-political and non-linguistic factors were found to have an important role in shaping the participants’ perceptions on proxemic behaviours in intercultural settings. Also, the participants referred to various words with different connotations to define these proxemic behaviours with regard to apologising, thanking and congratulating. Finally, the results revealed a framework which includes four factors (frequency, manner, wording, timing) affecting proxemic behaviours while performing these speech acts. The results highlight the need for including cultural components into higher education institutions to promote multicultural education among university students for their future interactions and guide English teachers about how to include proxemics and speech acts in their future teaching practices. © Macquarie University 2022.The author declares that there was no funding for the study

Elephant skin formation on UHPC surface: Effects of climatic condition and blast furnace slag content

    No full text
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), which typically contains extremely high superplasticizer amount, tends to render a special type of dense surface layer, especially under drying conditions. Even if the inner side of fresh UHPC is still in a flowable nature, the top surface of the concrete which is exposed to ambient conditions renders a dense cover called “elephant skin” in a short time after casting. In this study, the effects of climatic conditions and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) replacement on the elephant skin formation were studied. The influence of elephant skin formation on the macropore profile was assessed by micro-computed tomography scan. Observations revealed that any drying condition that does not lead to water vapor condensation on the fresh surface can trigger the formation of elephant skin within minutes after casting. Both microscopic and micro-computed tomography investigations showed that as a result of elephant skin formation, most of the air bubbles cannot escape from the fresh matrix, and locate under the skin. These air bubbles and elephant skin itself result in a multi-layered structure in UHPC body throughout the cross-section and reduce the aesthetics of the casting surface. Increasing GGBS replacement percentage significantly reduced the superplasticizer demand which is responsible for skin formation, however, did not eliminate the problem.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Materials and Environmen

Hydration heat, strength and microstructure characteristics of UHPC containing blast furnace slag

    No full text
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is an innovative cement-based composite with high mechanical performance under tensile and compressive loads, extremely low permeability, and excellent durability. Because of these features, UHPC has the potential to contribute to the development of new architectural perspectives and structural systems with prolonged service life; therefore, it is anticipated that the use of UHPC in cast-in-situ applications will increase in the near future. As a result of its high Portland cement dosage, the hydration heat of UHPC can be relatively high compared to that of conventional concrete. Thus, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) can be used in UHPC formulation for reducing Portland cement dosage thereby limiting hydration heat while also addressing ecological and engineering concerns. In the scope of this study, the effects of GGBS replacement (0%, 30%, and 60%) on the hydration heat, strength, and microstructural characteristics of UHPC were studied. Results showed that GGBS-bearing UHPCs are more sensitive to ambient temperature in respect to cumulative heat. 60% GGBS replacement reduced cumulative heat release by 36% and 28% at 20 °C and 35 °C respectively. So, the benefit of GGBS on reducing hydration heat is less pronounced in hot weather. Performance differences in strength depending on the replacement ratio were only noticeable on the first day of curing. Prolonged curing time and fiber inclusion eliminated strength differences. Microstructural investigations indicated that Ca(OH)2 can be lowered up to 0.5%, and the Ca/Si ratio of the C–S–H phase was reduced below the value of 1.0 after 90 days of curing as a result of GGBS replacement.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Materials and Environmen

    No full text
A prolific and versatile Dutch writer, translator and orientalist Robert Hans van Gulik (1910-1967), aka 高罗佩 Gao Luopei, has composed a series of historical detective novels 大å”狄公案 Datang Digong An ‘Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee’, which concerns an illustrious district magistrate and statesman ç‹„ä»æ° Di Renjie (630-704 AD), who competently investigates murder and corruption in Tang (618-907 AD) China. Upon publishing the debut work The Chinese Maze Murder (1951) in English, van Gulik renders it into a Chinese version entitled ç‹„ä»æ°å¥‡æ¡ˆ Di Renjie Qian, which is the only self-translation by the author-cum-translator. In the Chinese version of The Chinese Maze Murder, the vast majority of metaphors and similes are translated by means of conversion and deletion, so they can be regarded as covert translations in the sense of House (1977, 2014)

Versatile DAC-less successive approximation ADC architecture for medium speed data acquisition

    No full text
Implementation of the DAC is usually the bottleneck in designing a SAR ADC. Here an innovative DAC-less SAR (DLSAR) ADC architecture is presented which alleviates some drawbacks of the conventional SAR counterpart. The proposed DLSAR binary search algorithm is comprised of two arithmetic operations of division-by-two and subtraction to emulate the DAC function. The hardware of the DLSAR ADC is implemented using ordinary circuit building blocks of a SAR ADC but with less complexity and more robustness against PVT variations as DAC is removed. The developed DLSAR architecture is versatile so that the converter hardware could be readily reconfigured for different sampling rates and resolutions. Based on post-layout simulations in 0.18 μm CMOS process, the designed 8-bit DLSAR ADC consumes 150 μW of power at 2 MS/s including the asynchronous control logic circuit. The SFDR of the converter is up to 62 dB and the ENOB reaches 7.8 bits while it remains above 7.5 bits across most PVT corners without calibration. Also, by reconfiguring the DLSAR ADC to 9-bit resolution at 1 MS/s, the ENOB is generally around 8.2 bits achieving a scaled figure-of-merit (SFoM) better than 3.0 Ç/c-s.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Bio-Electronic

    No full text
© The Author(s) 2023.This article examines China’s vaccine drive in Eastern Mediterranean countries of Türkiye, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories during 2020–2021 from a soft power angle. 1 Although Chinese COVID-19 era health diplomacy is presented as a major breakthrough in the West, this study argues that continuities are more visible in the Eastern Mediterranean context with regard to China’s discourse and diplomatic practices. Beijing invested in the existing notions of propaganda, such as solidarity with developing countries, anti-Americanism, and economic partnership. In assessing the impact of Chinese vaccine diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, the study investigates major diplomatic events and concludes that China could not improve its image in Türkiye in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic
