Citizenship and belonging in the in-between: transatlantic immigration to Venezuela and Brazil, 1830-1914

This dissertation analyzes representations of citizenship and belonging in literary and cultural production that emerged during Spanish immigration to Venezuela and Portuguese immigration to Brazil throughout the long nineteenth century. The questions that guide my analysis are: what do immigration and citizenship laws tell us about how Brazilians and Venezuelans viewed Portuguese and Spanish migrants’ roles? What do literary authors’ discursive constructions of migrants tell us about how Brazilians and Venezuelans perceived migrants’ negotiation of belonging? To what extent did migrants’ status of being legally and emotionally “in between” their places of origin and settlement hinder their attempts to belong? How did the emotional communities and ties migrants formed help actively reconstruct bonds across the Iberian Atlantic? To answer these questions and study these contexts comparatively, I draw upon the fields of Transatlantic Studies and Migration Studies, which allow me to analyze the concepts and constructions of identity, citizenship, belonging, community, and emotions that occur in my primary texts while also expanding the scope beyond the Anglophone and Francophone worlds. The primary sources I analyze include laws and regulations, diplomatic correspondence, newspaper articles and advertisements, and novels. Chapter I examines laws, regulations, and decrees pertaining to immigration law that dictated the role of the migrant in the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century. Chapter II analyzes diplomatic correspondence, newspaper articles, and labor contracts concerning migrants from the Canary and Azores Islands who worked as indentured field laborers and the racial and social transformations they underwent that led to the construction of “regional” identities. Chapter III interrogates the discursive constructions and representations of Spanish and Portuguese migrants in Brazilian and Venezuelan novels published in the late nineteenth century that often relied on historical stereotypes. I consider the ways that these authors combated the rhetoric of “sameness” between migrants and natives that the elite frequently propagated. Chapter IV looks at Spanish and Portuguese migrant newspapers in Caracas, Venezuela and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the emotional communities they represented. I analyze how these emotional communities bound together in times of crisis and the emotions they valued and those they rejected.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2023-08-01The student, Amanda Rector, accepted the attached license on 2021-07-15 at 09:52.The student, Amanda Rector, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2021-07-15 at 10:01.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2021-07-16 at 14:10.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #16954 on 2022-01-12 at 13:05:05Made available in DSpace on 2022-01-12T22:56:10Z (GMT). Pair bonding: what mediates its formation and maintenance?

    No full text
Pair bonding is an exclusive mating relationship associating the memory of a mate with the potential successful completion of a breeding cycle. In evolutionary biology, pair bonding has been studied as a mating strategy and this biological phenomenon has been associated with survival related reproductive behaviors, however, behaviors that function in the formation of bonding and those that are established as a result of bonding are seldom distinguished, making it difficult to assess how pair bonding is represented in the brain. This thesis assesses pair bonding in ring doves, an animal that has a predictable sequence leading to a successful breeding cycle. Through a series of lesion, immunohistochemistry, and behavior studies we sought to understand the processing and execution of this fitness-critical complex behavior, by assessing the neural basis of pair bonding, understanding which behavioral events initiate the formation of the bond and how bonding affects an animal's decisions involving a mate. We found a neuro-marker for pair bonding that is more accurate than current methods of measuring bonding and that lesions to this region, the nucleus taeniae, disrupted pair bonding in doves. We showed that pair bonding moderates breeding behaviors, specifically courtship (nest coo) behavior, allowing for changes in these behaviors that can effect neurogenesis and recovery of behavior (nest coo) following lesions to regions associated with regulation of reproductive-endocrine function. We determined that a pair bond in ring doves is formed following the performance of courtship (nest coo) behavior, rather than the completion of the entire breeding cycle, suggesting that doves are using this stage to predict the successful completion of the breeding cycle with their mate, a concept consistent with pair bonding’s role in survival behavior. The ceramic tile industry, inserted within the universe of civil construction, cities and society as a whole, will suffer latent influence of all changes, be it in consumer trends, the internet of things, construction industrialization, smart city evolution and perhaps most relevant to sustainability in business. The civil construction sector has been facing a severe crisis, which has further damaged sectoral evolution and represented a setback. Seen as a traditional, lowproductivity and low-productivity segment, surrounded by disruptive changes and in the midst of a maelstrom of trends. This is the current scenario in which the ceramic industry has little interaction, it can either passively suffer the consequences or reevaluate its core business by evaluating these trends of the future and incorporating sustainability into strategies. Studying the future has become an odd tool to prepare companies for potential changes. This is the objective of this work, using the methodology of prospective scenarios to propose a guiding learning base that can collaborate with strategic visions for the sustainable development of the national ceramic tile industry. The study reached four exploratory scenarios, with the axes named "solution systems" and "business sustainability". The crossroads emphasized the scenarios: "Asleep at the wheel" (Decrease), "Saved by the bell" (Responsible Survivor), "Full of beans" (Traditional Leader), and "Hit the nail in the head" (Sustainable Leader). The downside scenario is seen as a natural curve if the sector remains in its comfort zone. The other scenarios describe trajectories considering different progressions in the two axes and finally the author describes a normative scenario, called "No pain, no gain” (Protagonist). The author proposes a strategic basis stretching the temporal milestones of industry by 2050. Finally, the process of handing the result in the industry congress, in the national class association and a validation research to verify the consistency and feasibility of the proposal. The results were positive and the respondents agreed with the view presented in the study

However, little is known about what factors influence teachers’ implementation and perceptions of AWE. This study examined the relationship between teachers’ implementation and perceptions of the MI Write AWE system, seeking to identify actionable factors that could enhance AWE implementation and acceptance in the future. A mixed-methods design was utilized, combining quantitative analysis of usage logs and survey data with qualitative insights from focus groups and interviews with 19 teachers who participated in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) testing the efficacy of MI Write on students’ writing outcomes. Quantitative data were subjected to descriptive and non-parametric statistical analyses, while qualitative data underwent a deductive coding process, offering an integrated view of MI Write's use and educators’ perceptions. Teachers implemented MI Write variably and not to the extent expected of them within the RCT, but they did report generally positive attitudes towards MI Write. Findings indicated that positive perceptions of system usability and usefulness may be insufficient to promote effective implementation. Instead, ecological factors such as curricular alignment and the challenge of incorporating AWE into existing workload, administrative support, and broader social and educational policy appeared as factors influencing implementation. Findings emphasize that teachers’ implementation and perceptions of AWE are dependent on a range of contextual elements beyond mere system functionality, suggesting that successful adoption requires addressing broader ecological considerations.

This report presents the approach to contexts from narrative approaches, with the purpose of evaluating traumatic psychosocial events based on the stories taken from the book Voces: stories of violence and hope in Colombia. Recognizing that during the last fifty years, an armed conflict has been developing in Colombia, the result of social inequalities, generated by the governments of the day; who distribute the treasure of the country to their accommodation, the people tired; Guerrilla groups are created such as: The Armed and Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC), National Liberation Army (ELN), which are present in most of the country's territory, including urban areas. The presence of these guerrilla groups and the absence of the State makes the peasants organize populated centers, through which they tend to supply their unsatisfied basic needs such as: health services, housing, employment, education, recreation and food. In turn, the State advances, making a presence, first with the military forces; which, through their military intelligence and their accommodation, determine that these populations, who according to them are guerrilla helpers, therefore easily make the decision to carry out a military deployment, using bombs, destroying the populated center and demanding to the peasants who must abandon their lands and houses; in this process of displacement generated from intimidation, torture, false positives and death, events that cause psychological and physical trauma in the peasants, increasing the presence of mental problems. Reflection and learning are presented, with the support of the psychological approach tool in violence scenarios, the image and the narrative. Deepening the reflection, learning process and understanding of the victims and the way of approaching these communities from the social and community psychology, a case was selected which corresponds to Story 1: Modesto Pacaya; Strategic, circular and reflective questions are designed in order to delve into the psychological and psychosocial part of the author Modesto Pacayá after his demobilization, finally an analysis and presentation of psychosocial approach strategies for the Case of Peñas Coloradas is presented. The voice photo experiences are marked by the violence and confrontations of the army against the guerrillas, power in humble territories, social backwardness in the affected population, leaving them unemployed and exiled from their lands. The only thing we can conclude in these situations is that when people come together to work for the same purpose, the results are as expected, since several guerrillas have demobilized to start a new life of good with their families and provide positive contributions to society

City shows itself like an enormous succession of superimposed images, where thespace-time dimensions become diluted before the constant avalanche of proposals, overpopulation, size and diversity. This form of work is the Autoethnography —which also attempts, obviously, to propose, legitimate and justify— of the stroll through this city in the search for a good place to make a representative picture of the city. In the journey around the city, its times are depicted insofar as it imposes certain itineraries, rhythms and visualization forms. Whether it is a stroll or just leting oneself to crawl, going from the topic to the fatigue, all that matters is to reach certain conclusions that are undeniable premises of the encounter, of the possibilities and frontiers that the city presents to each one of its users.Amendola, Giandomenico La ciudad postmoderna, Madrid, Celeste.Augé, Marc El viajero subterráneo, Buenos Aires, Gedisa.Castells, Manuel La ciudad informacional. Single Port Transumbilical Laparoscopic Surgery versus Conventional Laparoscopic Surgery for Benign Adnexal Masses: A Retrospective Study of Feasibility and Safety

    No full text
Background: Single port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS) is an innovative approach that is rapidly gaining recognition worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility and safety of SPLS compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of benign adnexal masses. Methods: In total, 99 patients who underwent SPLS for benign adnexal masses between December 2013 and March 2015 were compared to a nonrandomized control group comprising 104 conventional laparoscopic adnexal surgeries that were performed during the same period. We retrospectively analyzed multiple clinical characteristics and operative outcomes of all the patients, including age, body mass index, size and pathological type of ovarian mass, operative time, estimated blood loss (EBL), duration of postoperative hospital stay, etc. Results: No significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding preoperative baseline characteristics. However, the pathological results between the two groups were found to be slightly different. The most common pathological type in the SPLS group was mature cystic teratoma, whereas endometrioma was more commonly seen in the control group. Otherwise, the two groups had comparable surgical outcomes, including the median operation time (51 min vs. 52 min, P = 0.909), the median decreased level of hemoglobin from preoperation to postoperation day 3 (10 g/L vs. 10 g/L, P = 0.795), and the median duration of postoperative hospital stay (3 days vs. 3 days, P = 0.168). In SPLS groups, the median EBL and the anal exsufflation time were significantly less than those of the conventional group (5 ml vs. 10 ml, P < 0.001; 10 h vs. 22 h, P < 0.001). Conclusions: SPLS is a feasible and safe approach for the treatment of benign adnexal masses. Further study is required to better determine whether SPLS has significant benefits compared to conventional techniques

Can “the people” be feminists? Analysing the fate of feminist justice claims in populist grassroots movements in the United States

    No full text
In this article I examine the fate of feminist justice claims in the context ofgrassroots populist movements in the United States. By exploring populism onthe left—in neighbourhood community organising—and on the right—withinthe community organising among the Tea Party—I argue that a “politics ofauthenticity” is deployed in each movement with strikingly similar effects onthe development of feminist consciousness and justice claims in eachmovement. In left-wing community organising I find that feminist claims aresuppressed in order to preserve solidarity among grassroots actors and to beperceived by movement outsiders as patriotic. On the right I demonstrate howwomen-centric practices are generated through the strategic use of an identityI label “concerned motherhood”. For the Tea Party, women appear to have theability to identify as women for local action but this process seems to threatenboth feminism and democracy by women’s support for a politics of inequality.I conclude with a discussion about whether feminism and populism can bereconciled and the perils that confront feminist activists in the current upsurgeof populist movements around the globe

Rights and cultural expressions: analysis of the use of public space within the legal framework of the Colombian State

Universidad Libre Seccional Socorro -- Facultad de derecho, ciencias políticas y sociales -- Maestrian en derecho administrativoThe object of this research is the analysis of the legal figure of "public space" with respect to cultural rights and social expressions around the Colombian regulatory framework, with a view to being able to analyze in what form and extent the components that make up Public spaces really allow the materialization of these rights. So the main contributions are the possibility of understanding public spaces based on cultural identity and the different parameters that in Colombia materialize the rights of people to enjoy a social environment. Hence, research serves to strengthen the social fabric and provide new knowledge regarding a topic that, even if it seems obvious in practice, problems can actually be found that even today the State does not provide a solution

Correction to: Nature Medicinehttps://doi.org/10.1038/s41591-024-03345-4, published online 6 January 2025. In the version of the article initially published, in the eighth paragraph of the Discussion, the text “Among large nations, the largest increases in SSB-related T2D burdens were in Mexico, Thailand and the United Kingdom, and in CVD burdens, Colombia, Nigeria, Thailand and Russia. These changes align with rises in SSB consumption in these nations12. Similarly, declining SSB-related cardiometabolic burdens in Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom (for CVD) are consistent with their decreasing SSB consumption from 1990 to 202012” was incorrect and has now been updated to “Among largely populated nations, the largest increases in SSB-related T2D incidence was in Colombia, USA and Argentina; and in CVD incidence, Nigeria, Russia, Colombia and Thailand. These changes generally align with rises in SSB consumption in these nations, except in the US where slight declines in SSB consumption were offset by increased burdens of diabetes 12. Similarly, declining SSB-related cardiometabolic burdens in Turkey, Brazil, and the United States and the United Kingdom for CVD are consistent with their decreasing SSB consumption from 1990 to 202012.” Additionally, Supplementary Data 1 and 2 have been updated to remove decimals in values greater than 100.
