Louis-Philippe Dalembert, «vagabond jusqu’au bout de la fatigue»
The Haitian novelist and poet Louis-Philippe Dalembert (Port-au-Prince, 1962) has developed in his works of fiction the concept of vagabondage as a literary projection of his biographical wandering through multiple spaces. The aim of this essay is to study the presence of vagabondage and its distinctive features in those novels written by Dalembert that reflect the writer’s perpetual motion: Le Crayon du bon Dieu n’a pas de gomme (1996), L’Autre face de la mer (1998), L’Île du bout des rêves (2003), Les dieux voyagent la nuit (2006). The main characters are constantly moving, they are cosmopolitan wanderers who belong to many places at the same time, just like Dalembert himself. By analyzing the representation of movement in these fictions, we will show that the notion of vagabondage is depicted by the author as a positive and meaningful opportunity for the vagabond who travels across countries, languages and cultures

Moins l’infini, the first novel written by the Haitian writer and poet Anthony Phelps, has recently been republished, with some quite remarkable changes between the two editions. With a different title, a new dedication and some lexical and morphosyntactic variations, this reissue may be interpreted as a rewriting of the novel which was first published in 1972. This rewriting made by the author may be conscious or not but it results in a more universal atmosphere, less linked to a
strictly Haitian milieu. These variations are probably due to the historical and cultural gap between the two editions: forty years have passed and this love story which takes place under François Duvalier’s dictatorship has a different meaning now. The time has come to mourn the death of Duvalier’s opponents, the heroes never rewarded by justice that are mentioned in the new version of the title, Des fleurs pour les héros
De l’éruption rhétorique : étude de l’hypotypose dans la littérature catastrophique franco-antillaise
Hypotyposis is a figure of speech which often appears in written descriptions of natural disasters (e. g. in Voltaire’s "Poem on the Lisbon disaster", 1756). Its ability to show in the eye of the reader the unfolding of a tragic event through a vivid and dynamic description makes hypotyposis a useful tool in catastrophic and post-apocalyptic fiction. The aim of this contribution is to study the presence and function of hypotyposis in three novels which belong to French Caribbean literature, concerning two volcanic eruptions that took place in the 20th century (Montagne Pelée, Martinique, in 1902 and Soufrière, Guadeloupe, in 1976). By a stylistic and thematic analysis of some selected texts from Raphaël Tardon’s "La Caldeira" (1948), Raphaël Confiant’s "Nuée ardente" (2002) and Daniel Maximin’s "Soufrières" (1987), we will focus on the role of hypotyposis as a creator of pathos and emotional reactions in the reader’s mind by which the author can also convey a social and political message
Funzione del mito e funzione della scienza nel positivismo atipico di Tito Vignoli
Il positivismo italiano non fu affatto un movimento culturalmente sterile e scientificamente scadente, ma piuttosto intenso e di grande apertura nei confronti di quanto veniva prodotto al di fuori degli angusti confini nazionali. Con ciò non vogliamo di certo sterilizzarne i difetti, ma nemmeno velarne i pregi e, soprattutto, le figure di spicco che ad esso si ispiravano. Una di queste, tanto importante quanto “ignorata”, è quella dell’antropologo toscano Tito Vignoli (1829-1914), autore di numerosi scritti dedicati in particolar modo alla psicologia, all’antropologia, al darwinismo e il cui maggiore contributo risiede senza alcun dubbio nella stesura del suo capolavoro Mito e scienza (1879), i cui contenuti saranno oggetto del presente lavoro. Italian positivism was by no means a culturally sterile and scientifically poor movement, but rather intense and open to what was produced outside the narrow national borders. With this, we certainly do not want to sterilize its defects, but neither do we want to veil its merits and, above all, the prominent figures who were inspired by it. One of these, as important as “ignored”, is that of the Tuscan anthropologist Tito Vignoli (1829-1914), author of several writings dedicated in particular to psychology, anthropology, Darwinism and whose greatest contribution undoubtedly lies in the writing of his masterpiece Myth and Science (1879), whose contents will be the subject of this work
Mesobuthus vesiculatus
Mesobuthus vesiculatus (Pocock, 1899) Specimens. 1 adult ♀, No. 10 (FKCP), 1 adult ♂, No. 11 (FKCP), Kashan city, 11 August 2000; 1 adult ♀, No. 22, Main Abad, 11 August 2000; leg. V. Vignoli & P. Crucitti. Comments. Scorpions of medium size (total length: No. 10, 56 mm; 11, 46 mm; 22, 51 mm). The type locality of this species (“Astracan”, Iran) is not clear (Fet & Lowe, 2000). Apart from the types, there are only specimens identified by Whittick as Buthus gabrielis Werner, 1929, a junior synonym of M. vesiculatus. Fet & Lowe (2000: 181) listed specimens from Teheran and Comments. Androctonus amoreuxi baluchicus (Pocock, 1900) listed for the region by Kovarík (1997: 39) was an immature specimen that subsequently turned out to be an atypically colored Androctonus crassicauda. Deghani et al. (1998) listed for the region also Orthochirus scrobiculosus (Grube, 1873). This is probably a case of mistaken identity as well, as the record appears to concern a hitherto undescribed species of Orthochirus. The second author (FK) is revising this genus and his work indicates several new species from Iran. *This species is listed under the monotypic genus Olivierus Farzanpay, 1987 by Fet & Lowe (2000); however, Gantenbein et al. (in press) synonymized Olivierus with Mesobuthus Vachon, and restored O. caucasicus in Mesobuthus as traditionally accepted (Vachon, 1966; Habibi, 1971; Fet, 1984, 1989, 1994). Isfahan (Esfahan). Kashan is located between these two towns. These specimens were compared by one of us (FK) with the paratype (No. 1893.10.29.6) of Mesobuthus vesiculatus from the Natural History Museum, London. Il presente articolo si pone l’obiettivo di definire la presenza e la funzione dell’ipotiposi in tre romanzi appartenenti alle letterature dei Caraibi francofoni che trattano il tema di due eruzioni vulcaniche avvenute nel XX secolo (quelle della Montagne Pelée, in Martinica, nel 1902 e della Soufrière, in Guadalupa, nel 1976). Attraverso un’analisi tematica e stilistica di alcuni passaggi de La Caldeira di Raphaël Tardon (1948), della sua riscrittura Nuée ardente di Raphaël Confiant (2002) e di Soufrières di Daniel Maximin (1987), verrà illustrato il ruolo fondamentale dell’ipotiposi come figura creatrice di pathos, capace di generare reazioni emotive nel lettore, e come il possibile veicolo di un messaggio politico e sociale
ADER scheme for the shallow water equations in channel with irregular bottom elevation
In this paper we develop one dimensional non-linear ADER schemes for the shallow water system with source terms. In contrast to conventional schemes we adopt a formulation given in terms of the free surface elevation and water discharge. Data reconstruction is performed using ENO polynomials both for the conservative variables and for the bottom elevation. The scheme is accurate up to forth order both in time and in space; essentially non-oscillatory results are obtained for discontinuous solutions both for the steady and unsteady case. The resulting numerical schemes can be applied to several realistic cases characterized by non-uniform geometries
Proposta di traduzione e analisi di parti del libro “La Collina” di Andrea Delogu e Andrea Cedrola
At first, the main author of the book was presented together with the Italian source text: it was pointed out her double role of author and protagonist of the very events narrated in the book, inspired from facts which truly happened and which have to do with the story of her family.
Afterwards, the translation part itself follows. Some pages taken from the original Italian book were translated into English; the parts which have been chosen are various extracts which were thought as a leading thread to understand the meaning and the intention of the entire book.
After the translation, the analysis part was presented, where idiomatic expressions which can be found in great quantity throughout the book, are explained and commented. Here, clarifications can also be found concerning geographical and historical references, and something about the main characters who stand for people that truly existed.
Finally some other little extracts from the book were included: they were translated and some translating choices were explained. These extra parts were integrated in the thesis in order to point out the main difficulty of translating the book La Collina, that is, the presence of a great deal of idiomatic and slang expressions both of everyday colloquial use and concerning the field of drugs. The English translation of these parts had to sound natural and spontaneous to an English-speaking readership, which should not notice they were translated from Italian. A great deal of research on the Internet was carried out in order to make sure those expressions didn’t seem contrived and unnatural in English: this was one of the main concerns of the translation
