Fingerprint of a submerged-arc furnace: Optimising energy consumption through data mining, dynamic modelling and computational fluid dynamics
No full textThis study imparts a scientific perception of a phosphorous-producing submerged arc furnace never seen before; a proverbial fingerprint that can improve problem identification, disturbance diagnostics, process prediction, dynamic modelling and model predictive control of this type of furnace. It successfully incorporates accurate, multi-field thermodynamic-, kinetic- and industrial data with computational flow dynamic calculations; thus further unifying the sciences of kinetics and equilibrium thermodynamics. The true power of this study is the extensive and methodical validation that ensures industrially endorsed results. To facilitate all this the author spent six uninterrupted months at an industrial plant (Thermphos International), twice walked inside a cold submerged-arc furnace, gathered and analysed more than thirty-four mineralogical samples, managed an extensive and insightful sampling campaign on the slag streams, performed feed material porosity tests and had thirteen additional temperature probes installed inside the furnace lining. The author also scrutinised over years of industrial data, inspected many industrial drawing and partook in countless valuable conversations with industrial and technical experts to guarantee, not only a valuable scientific contribution, but one that is deep-rooted in authentic engineering principles.Mechanical Maritime and Materials Engineerin
Random hyperbolic graphs in d+1 dimensions
No full textWe consider random hyperbolic graphs in hyperbolic spaces of any dimension d+1≥2. We present a rescaling of model parameters that casts the random hyperbolic graph model of any dimension to a unified mathematical framework, leaving the degree distribution invariant with respect to the dimension. Unlike the degree distribution, clustering does depend on the dimension, decreasing to 0 at d→∞. We analyze all of the other limiting regimes of the model, and we release a software package that generates random hyperbolic graphs and their limits in hyperbolic spaces of any dimension.Network Architectures and Service

An improved semi-analytical method for 3D slope reliability assessments
No full textAn improved semi-analytical method for calculating the reliability of 3D slopes with spatially varying shear strength parameters is proposed. The response of an existing semi-analytical method has been compared with that of the computationally more intensive, but more general, random finite element method (RFEM), demonstrating that the simpler method underestimates the failure probability. An alternative relationship for the expected failure length and two correction factors are proposed, which modify the original formulation of the simpler method. Diasporas and democratization in the post-communist world
No full textIf diaspora communities are socialized with democratic values in Western societies, they could be expected to be sympathetic to the democratization of their home countries. However, there is a high degree of variation in their behavior. Contrary to the predominant understanding in the literature that diasporas act in exclusively nationalist ways, this article argues that they do engage with the democratization of their home countries. Various challenges to the sovereignty of their homelands explain whether diasporas involve with procedural or liberal aspects of democratization. Drawing evidence from the activities of the Ukrainian, Serbian, Albanian and Armenian diasporas after the end of communism, I argue that unless diasporas are linked to home countries that enjoy both international legal and domestic sovereignty, they will involve only with procedural aspects of democratization. Diasporas filter international pressure to democratize post-communist societies by utilizing democratic procedures to advance unresolved nationalist goals
3D slope stability analysis with spatially variable and cross-correlated shear strength parameters
No full textThe paper investigates the stability of slopes with spatially variable and cross-correlated shear strength parameters in 3D. The influence of various cross-correlation coefficients between these parameters on the probability of 3D slope failure has been considered for different levels of anisotropy of the heterogeneity in the shear strength. Specifically, 3D random fields of cohesion and friction angle were generated using the Local Average Subdivision method, and these were correlated with each other by various degrees. The fields were then linked to finite element analyses within a Monte Carlo framework.
