    Graphical modeling techniques and usefulness in the Model Driven Arcitechture : which are the criteria for a "good" Computer independent model?

    The Object Management Group (OMG) has presented a framework for model driven development: Model Driven Architecture (MDA). The departure point of this paper is an interest in process oriented modeling techniques relevant for a computer independent model in the MDA. We searched for the answer on the question what constitutes a "good" computer independent model (CIM). To get an answer we were using OMG:s demands of the modeling techniques that should be used when developing CIMs and found four process oriented modeling techniques which could serve as candidates. These four process oriented modeling techniques is analyzed based by Moody"s quality criterions. The findings indicates that there are only one candidate, BPMN, that meets some of Moody"s quality criterions, but there also drawbacks in BPMN, such as the criterions; expressiveness and emphasis

    Customer Service process IT-enabled support Fit or misfit? : a real world case

    This paper is a description of a real world case which focuses on a method to define the major gaps between functional requirements and existing support in a traditional ERP system. To identify and define the major gaps the method is using short interviews, existing documentation and graphic process diagrams. The report covers the process Customer Contact – Order Acknowledgement for a global chemicals manufacturer, Perstorp. The group in focus for this study is Customer Service. The results of this case were presented to Perstorp’s Customer Service as well as IT management as background material to assess improvement possibilities for both processes, IT support and for a new ERP strategy. Many other businesses are in similar situations. The aim in publishing this research paper is that these findings can be of practical use to other businesses as well as be an empirical foundation for other papers and possibly further research

    Minimizing the time spent on transformations between computer independent models and platform independent models

    A well known trade-off effect with modelling is that when it is user friendly it becomes ambiguous and when it has a formal notation, that makes it unambiguous, it becomes less user friendly. A well known solution to this dilemma is to use models on various levels of formalism where the least formalized models are known to be more user friendly and the most formalized models are well suited for being directly translated to program code. This article investigates how the user friendliness at an informal level can be combined with the accuracy needed at a more formal level of modeling. It aims at combining an informal user friendly perspective with a formal developer perspective in order to minimize the time spent on transformation mapping between user friendly models and developer models. Theoretical data and empirical data indicates possibilities of minimizing the work with transformations between models. The results show that a number of developed criteria can be used to secure the user friendliness of models that are used in communications between the designer and the end user

    Inter-organizational learning for viable inter-organizations

    To work against threats and to obtain new possibilities, new forms of inter-organizational collaborations are formed. Established models of organizational control are insufficient to cope with the management of such complex situations. In inter-organizations there is also a need to foresee and act upon future events. The management literature deals mainly with one single organization although aspects of collaborative processes are discussed. The human challenges of virtual team membership are: Creating effective team leadership; Managing conflict and global virtual teams dynamics; Developing trust and relationships; Understanding cross-cultural differences; Developing intercultural communication competence. Organizational learning is recommended as a tool to in the first place develop an intercultural communication competence, but also as a complement to learn more about each other. To develop organizational learning within an organization has shown to be successful. The question is how to transfer the concept to inter-organizations. The viability of an inter-organization is depending on the ability to work as a team, learn from each other and adapt to new situations. In this paper problems and possibilities with inter-organizational management and organizational learning are discussed.</p

    Team syntegrity as a complementary method for requirements analysis

    When developing complex system and systems that will work in a complex situation, or a complex environment, there is an enhanced problem to capture the information needed. It is critical that the system provides the users with as relevant information as possible. The traditional ways to capture information and to involve the users may sometimes be insufficient. All aspects of the intended system may be hard to capture and there might also be a problem to bring different opinions of what is important into line with each other.Team Syntegrity is a new process methodology developed by the management cybernetics Stafford Beer to stimulate collaboration and incite cross fertilization and creativity. The driving force behind the development of syntegration was to provide a structure for holding purposeful conversations which would be non-hierarchical and democratic but would be contained and not dissipate their energy or insights.As a way to catch what should be included in a complex system and to join possible split pictures that are present, Team Syntegrity could be a helpful complementary tool. In this paper the possibilities with using Team Syntegrity in preparation for the development of a complex system is presented. As an example a system for training for crisis situations is used.</p

    Information Technology Challenges for the Long-term Preservation of Electronic Information

    Information technology in combination with changes in organizational structures and forms for work has led to an increasing amount of information and also to totally new forms of information and records creation. Furthermore the e-government services, where the whole idea is to exchange information electronically, will speed up this development. A 10-year period is a long time when it comes to preserving electronic records. This is of course due to the rapid technological development, for example the problems with obsolete software and file formats. However, since archives are records of permanent and enduring value, it is essential that methods must be developed to ensure that digital records can be preserved for much longer time. Archival practice has for a long time been intertwined with information technology, dealing with the production, organization, storage, dissemination, and retrieval of records, using the technology at hand. This implies that the responsibility for research and development should lie upon researchers from both domains in collaboration. In this paper some problem domains of long-term preservation and how ongoing research matches these domains is presented. It seems clear that although much of the challenges associated with digital preservation is strategic, organizational, and structural and not only technical, the research concentrates at solving the technical issues
