In-Situ vs. Prefab 3D Printing Considerations for CO2-free Pop-up Architecture
This paper revisits existing pop-up typologies in architecture to identify opportunities for new shelter models to address current housing demands and future habitation requirements on Mars. It presents advancements in design to production methodologies based on computational and robotic techniques to meet current requirements and affordances while integrating sustainable and adaptive functionalities. The main goal is to advance pop-up architecture by developing methods and technologies for rapidly deployable on-and off-Earth habitats while addressing challenges of carbon-free architecture by means of 3D printing. By reviewing state-of-the-art in-situ vs. prefab 3D printing approaches with a particular focus on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) supported Design-to-Robotic-Production-Assembly and-Operation (D2RPA&O) methods developed at TU Delft material, process, and energy efficiency using locally sourced materials is achieved.</p
Application of Challenge-Based Learning in Higher Education: Architectural Design Studio
Challenge-based learning (CBL) is a pedagogical approach that relies on transferring knowledge to students through engaging students in real-world challenges. This study is presenting a framework for the application of challenge-based learning (CBL) in higher education specifically in Architecture school. Architectural Design Studio [2] at Heriot-Watt University is a project-based course that emphasizes on learning by doing approach and CBL. In this study, the CBL framework is being mapped against students’ work process, in addition to revealing the challenges given to the students and how it is manipulated to reach a coherent design project.During the course, the same challenges were given to all the students however, through the design process, each student approach it differently revealing a diverse solution. Throughout the course, students develop their research processes by creating individual approaches and implementing ideas using different hands-on mediums such as model making, sketches, videos, posters, etc. Moreover, the design studio is one of the main learning and teaching environments that help in developing creativity as well as collaborative working among students. This leads students to develop a higher level of communication skills through the use of media production techniques, to create and share the solutions they come up with. <br/

Artificial Intelligence Supported Site Mapping for Building Pop-Up Habitats
Building pop-up habitats in extreme weather conditions such as deserts requires preliminary contextual, i.e., site studies. Since the site’s condition is constantly changing due to sand relocation induced by wind, a rapid mapping solution is proposed. This is implemented by generating a 3D mesh model of the site with the help of a visual workflow and advanced computational design methods to implement in-situ 3D printing of habitats. This paper presents an integrated approach utilizing Computer Vision (CV), Deep Learning (DL), and generative design tools like Grasshopper. By harnessing the potential of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a robust framework is developed to recognize complex desert terrain features, independent of solar orientation and camera positioning. The methodology employs a state-of-the-art CNN customized for detecting features in desert settings. This is further enhanced by using Grasshopper to systematically generate a diverse dataset that enriches the model’s learning process. The resulting model efficiently extracts precise 3D meshes from 2D images, optimizing site mapping and integrating habitat printing workflows. This automated approach offers an effective solution for habitat construction in challenging environments, showcasing real-time processing.</p
Closed‐form approximated pricing of multivariate derivatives under switching regime models
Markov switching regime models have played an increasingly important role in finance and economics, especially for business cycles and long swings in currencies. Regime-switching models provide a simple way to capture stochastic volatility and thus overcomes the drawback of the classical lognormality assumption characterized by constant volatility. This paper considers multivariate Black and Scholes type models with a Markov regime-switching mechanism. We show that the pricing of some multivariate derivatives under models where the Markov chain has two or three states, can be approximated accurately in closed-form, based on linear and quadratic Taylor polynomials. Closed form approximation methods are computationally advantageous as they perform in constant time, compared with alternative methods such as Monte-Carlo, where the accuracy of the estimation is directly linked to the number of executed simulations
Computer Vision for Terrain Mapping and 3D Printing In-situ of Extra/-terrestrial Habitats
This paper addresses the complexities inherent in constructing sustainable extraterrestrial habitats within lava tubes that are envisioned as promising locations for human habitation and scientific inquiry. These environments are characterized by various challenges, which are addressed in this case by integrating computer vision (CV) techniques and 3D printing in-situ. The CV component generates a detailed depth map from synthetic imagery to combine this depth map with an adaptive 3D printing process, which is proposed to ensure level surfaces at various depths, facilitating precise foundation and habitat placement within the demanding context of lava tubes. Significantly, synthetic imagery is employed due to the absence of real lava tube photos at this early stage of the current exploration. The focal point lies in utilizing advanced deep learning (DL) algorithms and convolutional neural networks (CNN) to generate depth maps for extra/-terrestrial environments. This research represents a platform for further knowledge development in the fields of CV and its application to 3D printing in-situ, hence opening new avenues for sustainable extraterrestrial habitats.</p
SECONDARY VICTIMIZATION OF RAPE VICTIMS IN IRAN
The aim of the given study is to investigate the impact of the legal as well as the sociocultural systems of Iran on the secondary victimization of rape victims in the country. As a theoretical background of the study, two feminist theories, Feminist criminology and Radical Feminist, will be used. By the help of these theories the influences of patriarchy on secondary victimization of rape victims in Iran will be explained. While case study is used to frame the design of the study, qualitative content analysis will also be used to collect the needed data through analyzing different sources and materials. The findings show that the lack of comprehensive laws regarding rape crime in Iran and the way service providers view and perceive rape victims have led to re-victimization of rape victims. Moreover, analyzing the sociocultural system of the country demonstrated that the prevalence of rape myths and gender inequality in the society have also contributed to re-victimization of such victims. The author believes that establishing new comprehensive laws regarding rape crime and changing the service providers and people’s attitudes regarding rape crime and rape victims through education are the most appropriate solutions for this problem
The social and legal potential of Islamic Republic of Iran for democracy
The possibility of democratic transition in Middle Eastern countries like Iran is a question that promoted years of scholarly debate. This study examines the century old popular demands for change in Iran in order to find an answer to the democracy question for the country’s future. MethodologyThis master thesis is an entirely literature-based study in which theoretical and descriptive materials are discussed. The author answers the main research questions through detailed comparison of the political events of the last century in Iran. Primary resources and, where necessary, secondary resources are used to establish cause-effect relationships among major political and social events.FindingsWithout understanding the basic elements of democracy paradigm, democratic will does not make a country democratic. Democracy comes when those who demand it understand the basic elements of such a paradigm and are able to exercise them. This master thesis emphasizes the facts that it will take time until social values of Iranians, who lived for centuries as Muslims, accept democratic values.Research limitationsLimits to answer the questions of research arise since the historians and politicians who testify to some event of their own time invariably reflect their own particular standpoint. Another limit arises with the translation of the original texts, when the second language may not have a specific word equivalent for each of the synonyms of the source language. Originality / ValueUnlike traditional approaches relating democracy struggles of Middle East countries like Iran directly to Islamic rules and their lack of compatibility to liberal democracy, this master thesis examines the compatibility of Iranian’s social behavior with democratic will during the important political events of the last century.Atousa AmirabediniZsfassungen in engl. und dt.
