Educational multimedia adaptation for power-saving in mobile learning

    No full text
Limited-battery power is a major constraint in mobile learning. It is important to adopt battery power-saving mechanisms in mobile learning applications in order to extend the duration of learning activities. This thesis explores issues related to power-saving in mobile learning. Streaming of online educational multimedia on mobile devices is a power hungry activity due to large amount of wireless data transfer. A number of power-saving multimedia adaptation techniques for streaming multimedia have been developed in the past. Most of these existing approaches achieve power-saving by uniformly lowering the presentation quality of an entire multimedia stream. These generic techniques will typically lower the visual quality of an entire multimedia stream uniformly, without considering its impact on perceived loss of visual information at different points of the multimedia stream. In this thesis, through a user study we suggest that reducing the quality of educational multimedia beyond a certain level - for power-saving adaptation - can cause perceived loss of visual information in quality-sensitive portions of a multimedia. This could have a negative impact on perceived learning effects and leave the resource unsuitable for learning. The results of the study suggest that different parts of a learning multimedia may have different lowest acceptable presentation quality requirements for avoiding perceived loss of visual information. The participants of the study were able to comprehend visual information in one fragment at a lower visual quality but could not comprehend visual information of some other fragments at the same quality level. To address this problem, we proposed a Content-Aware Power Saving Educational Multimedia Adaptation (CAPS-EMA) approach that suggests a way of delivering each portion of a multimedia in a lowest acceptable quality based on the visual contents of each fragment. We demonstrate an implementation of this approach using a prototype system called MoBELearn. The results of our evaluation studies suggest that the way CAPS-EMA adapts multimedia resources is acceptable to users in power-saving situations. CAPS-EMA requires some authoring processes in order to identify fragments and lowest acceptable quality constraints. An expert evaluation described the activities involved in the authoring process as easy to understand and performPower-saving multimedia adaptation mostly results in some compromises in terms of visual quality and information content. Existing techniques offer users little control over the adaptation process and they are obliged to accept the consequences of the adaptation. We propose a Learner Battery Interaction (LBI) mechanism that suggests offering users power-saving options and relevant feedback about the expected compromises for each power-saving option. This would enable users to make informed choices about power-saving. We evaluated the concept of LBI through a user study. The results of the study suggest a positive perceived usefulness of the system and that mobile learning applications may benefit from the idea.In the end, we propose a search mechanism for online adaptive learning resources that would help find a personalised learning resource that would fulfil the information needs of a learner in a battery-efficient way. This proposed mechanism is based on the concept of discovery of online open adaptive learning resources. For this purpose, we proposed an ontology model to describe adaptive learning resources, in terms of its adaptive features: learning and presentation features. This model could be used as a basis for implementing the proposed concept of the discovery of versions of adaptive learning resources in order to enable learners to engage in learning activities in a battery-efficient way by searching for online learning resources

In the ever-expanding online fashion market, businesses in the clothing sales sector are presented with substantial growth opportunities. To utilize this potential, it is crucial to implement effective methods for accurately identifying clothing items. This entails a deep understanding of customer preferences, niche markets, tailored sales strategies, and an improved user experience. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems that can recognize and categorize clothing items play a crucial role in achieving these objectives, empowering businesses to boost sales and gain valuable customer insights. However, the challenge lies in accurately classifying diverse attire items in a rapidly evolving fashion landscape. Variations in styles, colors, and patterns make it difficult to consistently categorize clothing. Additionally, the quality of images provided by users varies widely, and background clutter can further complicate the task of accurate classification. Existing systems may struggle to provide the level of accuracy needed to meet customer expectations. To address these challenges, a meticulous dataset preparation process is essential. This includes careful data organization, the application of background removal techniques such as the GrabCut Algorithm, and resizing images for uniformity. The proposed solution involves a hybrid approach, combining the strengths of the ResNet152 and EfficientNetB7 architectures. This fusion of techniques aims to create a classification system capable of reliably distinguishing between various clothing items. The key innovation in this study is the development of a Two-Objective Learning model that leverages the capabilities of both ResNet152 and EfficientNetB7 architectures. This fusion approach enhances the accuracy of clothing item classification. The meticulously prepared dataset serves as the foundation for this model, ensuring that it can handle diverse clothing items effectively. The proposed methodology promises a novel approach to image identification and feature extraction, leading to impressive classification accuracy of 94%, coupled with stability and robustness

Roman Urdu is a prevalent medium of expression on social media, news websites, and text messages in the subcontinent, making it a valuable data source for social media and text analytics, particularly in the Indo-Pak perspective. However, despite the immense potential, limited efforts have been made in the area of Roman Urdu text analytics due to various complexities, such as a lack of a standard lexicon, the informal nature of the text, and the lack of text processing tools. The development of the Roman Urdu Part-of-Speech (POS) dataset and the implementation of a robust tagger hold immense importance for text analytics in Roman Urdu. In this work, we created a comprehensive, large-scale Roman Urdu POS dataset and developed a Roman Urdu POS tagger, laying the foundation for future advancements in advanced text analysis. Our approach involved the utilization of Hidden Markov Models, Neural Networks, state-of-the-art transformer models, and Large Language Models as baselines. In our work, we curated two distinct test datasets: one with lexical variation and the other without such variation. This approach allowed us to test the model’s robustness in handling different linguistic challenges posed by lexical variations. Our tagger yields high-quality output with an accuracy score of 96% without lexical variation and 86% on test data with lexical variations. We also evaluated state-of-the-art Large Language Models (GPT-4o and Llama-3-8B) in zero-shot and few-shot settings, with GPT-4o achieving up to 53.78% accuracy in the few-shot configuration, demonstrating a substantial performance gap compared to specialized models. This work establishes a comprehensive framework for Roman Urdu POS tagging that effectively addresses lexical variation challenges, providing essential resources and benchmarks for advancing Roman Urdu natural language processing research
