Listening Voices: On Actualizing Memories
This chapter presents an artist’s vision of the notion of ‘voice’ in relation to that of memory. Under the auspices of her own practice, Esther Shalev-Gerz explores the modalities of voice as illustrated by three of her own artistic projects. The notion of voicing requires becoming vocal and this in turn suggests a demand or need for the contrapuntal – being listened to. The author considers the modes of voicing and listening which have allowed her to ask broader questions about the relationship of the artist to formations of community and society and to investigate the question of belonging from the perspective of the artist as ‘nomad
